Early the next morning. I noticed some commotion outside the room and poked my head out to investigate.

“Ah! Maki-san, please hurry and get yourself ready!”  

“Alicia, what’s going on?”  

“The main forces from the royal capital have arrived!”  

“What!? This early in the morning?”

I had thought they would camp somewhere or stay at an inn and arrive around midday after getting ready. This was completely unexpected. I hurriedly got dressed and went down to the living room, where not only the Yamato siblings but also Madoka, Yuria, and Dietrich-sama were already gathered.

“Sorry, I’m late.”  

“No worries, I just got here myself.”

Dietrich-sama had stayed at a separate inn. He smiled warmly as he spoke.

“Now that everyone heading to Shriden has gathered, let’s go out and welcome them.”

Apparently, the Captain and Vil-san had already gone ahead with the troops to the northern gate. Well, since we’re welcoming the knights from the royal capital, we should prepare an appropriate reception. 

We left the mansion and headed briskly towards the northern gate, where we met up with the soldiers.

“Dietrich-sama, Maki-sama, please come to the front.”

The Captain, who was leading the group, called out to us. So we moved forward. The main force had already come close enough to be visible from the ground. Riding at the front of the group was the musclehead Knight Commander.

“—UOOOOOOOOOHHHH!”

—Rumble!

…Ugh, he’s so loud! That musclehead Knight Commander! Even though he’s still quite far away, my ears are ringing!

“Maki-sama… Could that person be?”

“So that’s Commander Vigul Langdoria.”

The Captain and Vil-san both pressed one ear with their hands while speaking. Looking around, most people were either covering one or both ears as well. Among them, Yuria stood out, smiling and waving cheerfully in response to the Knight Commander’s deafening shout.

After Yuria leaped forward, Madoka had moved closer and spoke to me. 

…Is it just my imagination, or does she seem a bit upset, maybe even annoyed?

“You’ve been talking quite a lot with Yuria, haven’t you?”  

“Well, we worked together for a while in the royal capital. We’ve chatted a bit.”  

“Chatted, huh… Yeah, just chatting, right?”

…What’s she trying to say? Well, back in school, I was mostly alone, and Madoka was the only one I really spent time with. So maybe it feels strange to her. But is it something worth overthinking?

“Anyway, Yuria’s gone to meet the Knight Commander. The main force should be arriving soon.” 

“…Yeah, you’re right.”

…When we return from Shriden, I might need to have a talk with her.  

…Wait, can we even come back?

“…Well, I guess I’ll figure it out when we get there.”  

“Huh? What was that?”  

“Nothing, don’t worry.”

Sigh, I still have a lot to learn. Things keep piling up one after another. If I don’t start thinking further ahead, I might end up getting caught in something even my Appraisal can’t handle.
