Episode 123: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 58
Several days had passed since the fall of Shriden. Key figures from Adelreed had already teleported to the area, and discussions about the future were underway. The reason they were able to teleport from Adelreed was that we had discovered a teleportation magic circle to return from Shriden.
“You were amazing again this time, weren’t you—Leyreina-san?”
“I don’t know, Maki-sama. It doesn’t really feel like a compliment coming from you.”
She said this with a wry smile, and I found it quite disappointing.
“I’m genuinely complimenting you.”
“But this time, the real hero was definitely you, Maki-sama.”
“Really? All I did was Appraise things.”
“And that’s what was incredible.”
I still don’t quite understand the nature of divine-class professions. But with Leyreina-san’s vast knowledge, it feels like her abilities are practically cheat skills too.
“Well then, I have more teleportation transfers to handle. So if you’ll excuse me.”
“Ah, please. Also, if you can, find someone to replace you as soon as possible.”
“…..You mean for Dietrich-sama, right?”
“Yes.”
“…..Please, just don’t let it interfere with his work, okay? I’m serious, alright?”
Haha. You don’t need to worry that much. Dietrich-sama is highly competent.
…..Not that I could actually say that out loud. Smiling, I parted ways with Leyreina-san.
Dietrich-sama will be fine… I haven’t confirmed it, but I’m sure.
“Ah! Mihiro-kun!”
“Sensei, what is it?”
As I walked through Shriden castle, Sensei called out to me from behind. Well, I asked what was up, but I already knew why she was here.
“I was thinking of visiting the students. Would you like to come along?”
“I might as well. I want to see Arata too.”
“…Mihiro-kun, how about talking to the other students as well?”
Sensei suggested this, but they’d all abandoned me. I didn’t really have strong connections with any of them. And as long as I could talk to Arata, I was satisfied.
“It’s fine. I didn’t talk to many people at school. And it’s better to talk to those I got along with, don’t you think?”
“Well, that’s true, but…”
“This is another world, Sensei. It’s not about being classmates or otherworlders, it’s about associating with people who benefit you. That should be enough, right?”
It’s possible the other students could be useful to me. But it’s too much of a hassle to Appraise them. Besides, if someone suddenly tried to befriend me because they learned about my skills, I wouldn’t trust them.
“…..You’re right. I shouldn’t push. I’m sorry.”
“Nah, it’s fine. In fact, I think it’s amazing you’re still being a teacher in all of this.”
“…..That’s not really a compliment, is it?”
“It is. I promise.”
As we talked, we reached the area where the classmates were staying. It looked like they hadn’t moved from the rooms they were assigned initially. However, some of them were deeply affected by abnormal conditions and had been moved to separate rooms. I assumed Sensei had already visited those rooms before coming here. The fact that she was still looking after them like this showed just how much of a teacher she truly was.
“Well, I’ve got some business to take care of, so I’ll be going.”
“….Alright. I’ll stop by Arata-kun’s place later, so I’ll see you then.”
She walked off after saying that. But by the time she gets there, I might not be around anymore.
“…Alright, let’s go.”
The truth is, I hadn’t seen Arata since the day he was beaten by Yuria. Partly because I’d been checking for abnormal conditions, but also because Arata had apparently been avoiding meeting me. Knowing him, he was probably feeling guilty for trying to kill us. But honestly, I didn’t care.
Since he was being controlled, it wasn’t really his will. If that’s the case, I’m going to see him regardless.
—Knock knock.
I knocked on the door where Arata was supposed to be… but, no answer.
—Knock knock knock.
“…..Arata. It’s me, Maki.”
“—…..”
…Oh, I see. So, he’s going to stay silent, huh?
“.….Appraise: Method to Get Arata to Open the Door.”
…..Interesting. So that’s what you’re thinking, huh?
“…..Arata. Do you think it’s your own fault that you were easily manipulated?”
“—…..!?”
I sensed a faint shift in the atmosphere inside the room. Wow, the Appraisal skill really is something else.
“I knew it. Just so you know, Maria’s Magic Eye is a pretty high-level skill, okay? Plus, her Charisma skill level was higher than yours. So if you’re feeling guilty, thinking you were manipulated because of your own mind, it’s got nothing to do with that.”
Arata, inside the room, must have been wondering how I knew all this. And the only way to clear up his doubts was to open the door and talk to me.
“—…..How do you know that?”
Talking to me through the door, huh?
“I’m not telling you unless you open the door.”
“—…..Fine.”
A few seconds after hearing Arata’s reply, the door finally opened.
