Episode 62: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 2
Even though I was holed up in my room, I figured staying in there wouldn’t help. So I decided to head outside.
I walked through the streets of Granzawall, passed through the gates, and made my way down the road.
The path leading to the Forest of Demons had already been paved as part of the development work.
With no monsters around, which had been confirmed, it felt more like a leisurely stroll as I yawned.
“Still, the development has progressed pretty far, hasn’t it?”
Even with the help of the Adventurers Guild, this speed is impressive.
A huge win was repairing the relationship between Alicia and the Guild Master of the Adventurers Guild.
“Oh, there it is.”
I was headed to the Transfer Shrine, now part of a small waystation town.
As development progressed, I had suggested setting up a temporary base. And gradually, the base moved closer to the Forest of Demons.
In the end, the area around the Transfer Shrine became the primary base.
Back when Madoka and the others first teleported here, there was only a simple building. But now, proper facilities had been built where soldiers and adventurers could stay.
“Oh? If it isn’t Maki-sama.”
“Hello, Vil-san.”
The person who called out to me was Vil-san, a soldier… well, actually, he’s the Vice Captain of the soldiers now.
Thanks to his achievement of saving Ricott-san and Captain Ryan Snow-san in the Forest of Demons, he had been promoted.
He’s now the one responsible for overseeing the development of the Forest of Demons and stays in this waystation town for extended periods.
“Is there something you need here?”
“No, not really. I was just thinking over some things and got stuck, so I came out for a walk.”
“Well, walking is fine, but… you’re out here alone? Oh, you did an Appraisal, didn’t you?”
“Yes. I confirmed there are no monsters around.”
He was concerned for my safety, but immediately withdrew his comment once he realized I had used my Appraisal skill.
“Still, it’s rare to see you struggling with something, Maki-sama. Is it something even your skill can’t solve?”
“Yeah. I don’t have enough magic to use my Appraisal.”
As we talked, Vil-san offered me a chair to sit in.
“Aren’t you busy with work?”
“I’m in a position of giving orders now, so I actually have more free time than before.”
He laughed as he said this, but I knew the truth was probably different.
The development of the Forest of Demons required skilled people, and I had heard that Vil-san was frequently called upon.
“Vil-san, what level are you now?”
“I’m level 40 now. Even fighting monsters in the Forest of Demons doesn’t raise it much anymore.”
That’s the result of his efforts.
In terms of strength, he’s among the best in Granzawall. He’s probably only matched by Captain Ryan-san and the Guild Master of the Adventurers Guild.
“—Vice Captain!”
As expected, a call for him came in quickly.
“Ah, just when I thought I could relax for a change.”
“If you’re this busy, then you’re not relaxing at all, are you?”
“No, no, there are times when I can take it easy! But it seems I need to hurry now.”
He stood up from his chair and called out to the soldier who had come to summon him.
“Where is it?”
“In the forest, partway through development! It’s about five minutes away if we run at full speed!”
“Five minutes… then we should go all out.”
“I’ll go with you.”
With Vil-san there, I figured it wouldn’t be an issue. But with my Appraisal skill, the battle might go a little smoother.
“Is that okay?”
“Yes. It’s perfect for clearing my head.”
“Killing monsters in the Forest of Demons to clear your mind… well, no time for idle talk. Let’s head out.”
I stood up and discreetly ate a special fruit that temporarily boosts abilities.
To the soldiers who weren’t in the know, I told them it was a fruit that Akigase-sensei, an advanced class, had specially prepared.
In reality, it was a fruit from the Forest of Demons. But since it’s rare to find something that can temporarily boost abilities, I’ve kept that part secret.
“…Alright. Let’s go, Maki-sama.”
“Yeah!”
After eating the Speed-boosting grapes, Vil-san and I took off running.
At the same time, I used my Appraisal to accurately locate where the monsters were.
“It’s a Grizzly Blade! Level 51!”
“Quite a formidable opponent.”
“Your solo win rate against it is 20%, but if you work with the soldiers already engaged—100% success.”
“With your assurance, I can fight with confidence!”
As we Approached, I relayed the strategy to Vil-san. And once we arrived, he passed on the instructions.
Though the opponent was a higher-level monster, Vil-san and the soldiers followed the plan and managed to defeat the Grizzly Blade with only minor injuries and no casualties.
It’d be nice if I got some experience points from this, but… yeah, no such luck.
