Episode 68: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 8
Well, when people hear about the royal capital, they naturally think it’s a developed place with a solid foundation for living. If you can find a job, you should be able to live without any difficulties. Although nothing particularly troublesome has happened in Granzawall, the royal capital must be an even more wonderful place than I imagine.
“Um, so you’re going to move here, right?”
“…Yes.”
“And your family…?”
“…I don’t have one. Well, I do, but I’m not welcome there.”
“So, you’ll be with the people here?”
“…I suppose so.”
With each response, Leyreina-san’s posture became more and more hunched. Sebas-san and the maid were watching her with concern.
“…Then I’ll arrange for a mansion where you can live right away.”
“…Thank you… huh?”
“Glenn, what do you think?”
“Well… how about a mansion to the west, two houses down? It’s a bit dirty. But if we start cleaning now, we should finish before noon.”
“Then we’ll make that our first option. Let’s look at a few others as well—”
“Um, um!”
As the Yamato siblings took charge of the conversation, Leyreina-san suddenly raised her voice.
“”What’s the matter?””
“Is it really okay? I mean, really?!”
“What do you mean? It’s a royal decree.”
“That’s right. We don’t have the option to refuse, and we certainly can’t disregard a newcomer.”
“…Ah, thank you so much.”
“I’m glad to hear that, My Lady.”
“My Lady! That’s wonderful!”
Whether or not Leyreina-san was truly convinced, Sebas-san and the maid were crying and expressing their joy. …What on earth happened to these people?
“Um, I might be rude, but…”
“Y-yes! What is it?!”
I couldn’t help but ask Leyreina-san about something that was bothering me.
“Why were you so cautious? The fact that you were sent from the royal capital means you hold a certain status, right? Yet you seemed wary of Alicia and the others, so I was curious.”
“Ah… um, well…”
“I don’t mind if you don’t want to say. I’m just curious.”
The atmosphere became incredibly awkward, and I was about to withdraw. But Leyreina-san suddenly grabbed my arm.
“…Leyreina-san?”
“Ah! …I-I’m sorry! But… could you listen to me?”
“Are you sure it’s okay?”
“Yes. Since I will be living here, I would like everyone to know.”
From there, Leyreina-san began her confession. Well, I kind of had an idea already when I heard she was not welcomed by her family… It seems Leyreina-san was exiled by her family.
Apparently, the Maguire family is a prestigious family of Mages and is also a noble family. Leyreina-san was born as the third daughter. But it seems she only had average magical power.
“Isn’t average magical power still sufficient?”
“It’s enough, but only those with high-level magical power are favored in the Maguire family.”
“I see.”
Because of this, Leyreina-san decided to gain knowledge about magic to make up for her lower magical power. She claimed she became more knowledgeable than anyone in the Maguire family. But that turned out to be a problem.
“Both my parents and my older siblings seemed to find me a nuisance.”
“So, you were sent to the remote Granzawall?”
“…Yes. It was a royal decree, and my father thought it was an honor to accept the duty. But he was disappointed when he heard the destination was Granzawall. That’s why I was chosen as an envoy, even though I have only knowledge.”
“Is that so? …So, Leyreina-san, you have a wealth of knowledge, then.”
“Yes. I have a lot of knowledge, but I wonder how useful it will be…”
…Huh? It feels like there’s some awkwardness in the way Leyreina-san and I are speaking.
“Even with abundant knowledge, if you lack magical power, you can’t do anything. I’ve been told by the king to assist in the development of the Forest of Demons, but I’m not sure how much help I can actually be…”
Ah, I see. Leyreina-san seems to have convinced herself that she can’t do anything with just knowledge. Well, if she’s been constantly told at home that “It’s just knowledge”, it makes sense.
However, Leyreina-san’s knowledge is very valuable to me. My Appraiser (Divine Eye) sometimes provides answers, but there are many things that I find difficult to do on my own.
Improving magic circles is a good example.
I’m shown how to do it, but I don’t understand the reasons behind it at all. Explanations are displayed in detail, but when they say “this becomes that” and “that becomes this,” it makes no sense to me.
It seems the same goes for other Mages; even when explained verbally, they just tilt their heads in confusion. The teleportation magic circle is that complex.
I don’t know yet how extensive Leyreina-san’s knowledge is. But just being able to understand things verbally would be a great help, so I hope that’s the case.
“…Um, by the way, who are you?”
“…Ah, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Mihiro Maki. Haven’t you heard about me?”
“Mihiro Maki? …Are you, by any chance, the otherworlder that the king mentioned?”
“That’s exactly right.”
As I introduced myself, Leyreina-san seemed to freeze up for some reason. Sebas-san and the maid also did the same.
“…Um, is something wrong?”
“““…..We….w-w-we apologize for our rudenesssssssss!”””
…What is my standing here?
