Episode 73: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 12
――…Ugh…… Ah..…yeah, it’s the usual ceiling.
“…Good morning.”
“Maki-kun!” “Maki-san!”
When I opened my eyes, I saw Madoka sitting on a chair next to my bed with her head down, and Alicia arranging flowers in a vase by the window. The moment I called out to them, they both quickly turned toward me, calling my name.
“A-Are you okay, Maki-kun?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry for making you worry.”
“I’ll go let everyone know!”
“Thank you, Alicia.”
I could hear Alicia calling out to Glenn loudly as she rushed out of the room.
“Maki-kun, what happened after I left? Alicia said you suddenly collapsed, and I’ve been really worried…”
“Ah… um… sorry, it was completely my fault.”
“Was it really?”
“Yeah. But I’ll explain once Alicia comes back. By the way, how long have I been asleep?”
Since Alicia would likely want an explanation as well, it made sense to wait until everyone was gathered.
“You’ve been asleep for the entire day.”
“A whole day? Well, that’s not too bad.”
“Wha—! A whole day is a big deal!”
I had once slept for three days straight. So one day didn’t seem like much in comparison. As I was thinking this, Alicia returned to the room with Glenn and Yuria.
“Maki, are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You really scared us, you know!”
“Seriously, I’m sorry.”
“So, Maki-kun, what do you mean by saying it was your fault?”
At Madoka’s question, everyone’s eyes turned toward me, so I began my explanation.
“Do you remember Leyreina-san’s Erudite skill?”
“Yes. she said it appeared out of nowhere, right?”
“Exactly. So, since I knew you could gain skills later on, I wanted to use my Appraisal skill to see how to acquire skills. But it seems I didn’t have enough mana.”
“…Wait. Does that mean… you collapsed from magical exhaustion?”
“That’s exactly it! Ahaha!”
…Yep, their stares hurt.
“We were *really* worried about you, you know!”
“Yeah, Maki-kun!”
“Well, it does sound like something you’d do.”
“But you should also think about the people around you.”
Alicia and Madoka scolded me, while Glenn and Yuria looked at me with exasperation. They had every right to feel that way; attempting something like that during a meeting with Leyreina-sama wasn’t the smartest move.
“Oh! By the way, what happened with Leyreina-sama and the others?”
I realized that I must have interrupted the meeting, so I wanted to at least apologize. But apparently, they were no longer at the estate.
“Leyreina-sama and her group went to inspect Granzawall and the nearby town. Captain Ryan and Vice-Captain Vil are with them, so I don’t think there will be any problems.”
“I see. I’ll have to apologize when they get back.”
“Leyreina-sama was in quite a rush, you know.”
“Ugh… I really feel bad about it.”
I had only met her for a few hours, but I could already tell she was the type to get flustered easily. I could easily imagine her panicking at the situation.
“So, Maki, did you manage to figure out how to acquire skills?”
“No, I just ran out of mana without learning anything. I was hoping that if I figured it out, I could start leveling up by defeating magic beasts.”
“Maybe you could try eating some of those magic-boosting bananas?”
“I thought about that, but I have no idea how much mana I actually need.”
“It would be a problem if you collapsed again. But still, if you could find out, it would be incredibly valuable information.”
Glenn was right. If I could unlock the method for acquiring skills, it would benefit not only me but others as well. If people like Vil-san or Captain Ryan-san could acquire combat-focused skills, it would significantly speed up the development of the Forest of Demons. The same would apply to the other soldiers.
And if Madoka or Yuria, both with special-class professions, or advanced-class figures like Sensei or Guild Master Gorazzo could gain new skills, the kingdom’s progress would be even faster.
“But if that happens, it means a lot of military power will concentrate around Granzawall.”
“Huh?”
“Yes, that could make the king suspect a potential rebellion… that would be troublesome.”
“Oh… I see, that’s a valid concern.”
“Information that valuable can be a powerful weapon on its own… I agree with that. So, I guess we’ll need the king’s permission before pursuing the method for skill acquisition.”
If my theory was correct, my Appraisal skill could indeed reveal the method for acquiring new skills. My magical exhaustion was proof of that. If the Appraisal had been pointless, it wouldn’t have consumed mana. Or at the very least, it wouldn’t have drained it to zero.
“I’m sorry, Alicia, but could you report this to the king right away?”
“I understand. But I’m also responsible for overseeing the operations here, so…”
“Yeah, I get it. I’ll go myself.”
“Thanks, Glenn.”
We’ve unexpectedly found a foothold for the development of the Forest of Demons. However, the biggest issue still remains unresolved. To solve that, we can only wait for the king’s decision.
