Episode 77: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 16
“Ha!”
“Keep it up!”
“Hah!”
“Go for it!”
“Take that!”
“Cut it down!”
Ryan-sam and Vil-san sharply swung their swords, while Ricott-san sliced through with his greatsword.
“Fireball!”
“Blast them!”
“Thunderbolt!”
“So bright!”
“Stardust!”
“You’re taking down so many!”
“Hey, Maki!”
“Ouch!”
While the magic team—Alicia with her Fireball, Sensei with her Thunderbolt, and Madoka with her light magic Stardust—were blasting spells, I cheered them on. But out of nowhere, Yuria smacked me on the back of my head.
“…That hurt, you know?”
“What kind of half-hearted cheering is that?!”
“I mean, my cheering has no effect on the outcome.”
“Then do something useful!”
“Do something… useful? Maybe not getting in the way?”
“Ugh, you’re impossible!”
“I mean, eating fruit doesn’t exactly help me fight the beasts of the Forest of Demons, you know.”
“…Sigh. Well, that’s true.”
Yuria backed off after hearing the simple truth.
…Yeah, that was a totally unnecessary hit.
“Should I just stay quiet?”
“…I’d appreciate that. It’s distracting.”
“…Sorry.”
I just wanted to give a little encouragement, help them stay motivated… no, that’s not it. I just wanted to feel like I was contributing somehow. But I guess I’ll stop.
“Alright then, I’m going in too.”
“Got it. Be careful.”
“You don’t need to tell me!”
Yuria, the Fist King, fights in close combat. The idea of brawling with monsters at point-blank range terrifies me. But maybe Yuria feels differently.
“Take this! Hah! Doryaaa!“
“…Yeah, it kinda seems like she’s having fun.”
I don’t think it’s just my imagination. It really looks like she’s enjoying herself. …Wait, is she actually smiling? Well, whatever. In any case, I made a vow to never get on Yuria’s bad side.
“But still, like Yuria said, doing nothing at all feels wrong too. There are no monsters behind us, and there’s really nothing I can do.”
As I watched everyone fight, my mind wandered, and I started coming up with excuses for myself.
“…Appraisal: Leveling Up in the Forest of Demons.”
…Yeah, that’s not happening.
A bunch of options popped up on the display, but every single one had a 0% success rate.
Close combat, obviously, was impossible. Long-range attacks? No chance. Even poison? Useless. The beasts in the Forest of Demons seem to have high poison resistance, and I don’t have any poison that could work on them right now.
“Then… Appraisal: The Most Efficient Leveling for Madoka and Yuria.”
Sensei’s already at a decent level. But since the other two haven’t been here long, their levels are still a bit low. Plus, being in special-class professions, they need a lot of experience to level up. So progress is slow. But they’re in combat roles that get stronger as they level up. So if they gain more levels, they’ll become even more powerful.
“…But honestly, the most efficient way to level up is pretty much what we’re doing right now.”
Killing the Forest of Demons’ monsters while eating magical fruit. That’s the most efficient method. And that’s exactly what we’re already doing. Total waste of an Appraisal, really.
“Anything else I should Appraise?”
“Um, Maki-sama?”
“Huh?”
“What are you doing?”
…Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Leyreina-san.
“Well, when I use Appraisal, the results show up on my status screen.”
“Oh, so that’s why you were mumbling to yourself earlier. I’m relieved to hear that.”
“Relieved?”
“Yes. When you were talking to yourself like that, it was a bit… unsettling.”
…Yeah, sorry about that.
“By the way, Leyreina-san, how about you level up here too? You might be able to prove yourself to the Maguire family.”
She already has above-average magical ability. And as a Dual Mage in the intermediate-class profession, She’d easily surpass them if she gained some levels in this forest filled with powerful monsters.
“But is it really okay?”
“Of course. Here’s a magic-boosting fruit.”
When I handed Leyreina-san the banana, she stared at it intently. Well, it’s natural to be skeptical at first. Both Alicia and Glenn reacted the same way.
“For now, just give it a try. It tastes good, too.”
“…Well, then, excuse me,”
She said, covering her mouth as she took a bite of the banana. After a moment, she checked her status screen. Her expression was filled with shock, as expected.
“My Magic… it went from 100 to 200?”
“Exactly. Now, why not take down a monster to prove yourself? And if we can develop the Forest of Demons, you’ll prove yourself twice over.”
Leyreina-san continued to stare at her status screen without responding to my words. But her face looked like she’d made up her mind about something.
“I… I’ll fight too! Could I have another banana?”
“Of course!”
I watched as Leyreina-san eagerly ate another banana. When she finished, her face was brimming with determination.
“Alright! Go get ‘em!”
“Yes!”
As I watched Leyreina-san head off… I couldn’t help but realize: yeah, I really am the only one not doing anything.
