Episode 79: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 18
In the end, we managed to sweep through the Poison Snakes that were next in the patrol. We even took down the Gigant Rats, the next group of patrolling monsters.
If we don’t keep pushing forward, other monsters will join the patrols. So it’s clear we’ll spend tomorrow continuing to hunt monsters. That said, the members who participated in today’s battles leveled up again, which should make things a bit easier.
“I still can’t believe I went from level 10 to level 17 in one go.”
“I’ve only reached level 34 in the last few months, so it’s not that surprising.”
“…But that’s still pretty amazing, Alicia-sama.”
“Yeah, I guess. I’ve lost my sense of what’s normal because of Maki-san.”
The two in front of me are talking about me like I’m some sort of weirdo. Despite that, I’d like to think it’s only natural that, as someone from another world, I don’t understand this world’s “common sense.”
“Maki-kun, how’s your leveling going?”
“Just so you know, if you don’t get stronger, the development of the Forest of Demons and improvements to the magic circle won’t progress. We’re counting on you.”
“I-I know, I get it… But it’s not that easy. When I check the Appraisal results, it looks like it’s going to be a long, grueling process.”
I mutter that as I run an Appraisal on myself, looking for the fastest route to reach level 5.
“So, what does it say?”
“…The fastest way is to kill 50 Bullfangs that are level 10 or higher.”
““F-FIFTY!?””
Yeah, of course, they’re shocked. Anyone would be.
If I could take them all out in one go, it might be quick. But if I could do that, I’d be able to defeat at least one of the monsters in the Demon Forest by now.
But I can’t, which is why the Appraisal says what it says.
“Finding Bullfangs is easy, thanks to the Appraisal skill. But the effort it takes to bring one down is ridiculous.”
“Even after eating apples for Strength enhancement, you still can’t manage it?”
“How weak are you, Maki?”
“I *want* to get stronger too! But seriously, how is it fair that to get to level 5, I have to kill 50 monsters that are higher level than me?”
“You’re right about that, Mihiro.”
It was Ricott-san who joined the conversation.
“If an intermediate classes like mine takes down monsters that are significantly higher in level, they can gain one or two levels easily.”
“See? It’s not my fault!”
“But Mihiro has a special-class profession. So it makes sense to have a harder time leveling up. So, it’s actually *your* fault, Mihiro.”
“Ricott-san, I thought you were on my side!”
Though I raised my voice in mock anger, Ricott-san was right.
When I talked to Madoka and Yuria, they said they had struggled with leveling up too. They trained hard with the castle’s knight brigade and hunted nearby monsters with bodyguards. But because they were special-class professions, their levels didn’t rise easily.
They admitted that it was frustrating watching other advanced and intermediate-class professions level up faster while they stayed behind.
“But we kept going because we were determined to get strong enough to leave the castle one day.”
“Yeah, the outcome was great, even if the process ended with us getting exiled.”
The two of them had some understanding of why they were exiled. Unlike the classmates who became puppets of the royal family of the Kingdom of Shriden, they acted independently. It then led to their banishment.
“…Now that I think about it, even after months of training, they were only level 8 and 9 when we met again. So being level 4 as a non-combatant like me must be normal, right?”
“Wow. Maki’s really trying to convince himself, huh?”
“You shouldn’t say that, Yuria-chan. Maki-kun’s doing his best in his own way.”
“…I can hear you two, you know!”
Still, I can’t afford to slack off just because killing 50 monsters sounds like a pain.
I’ll need to carve out time whenever possible to hunt Bullfangs and gradually level up.
“…Once this Forest of Demons development calms down a bit, I’ll get started on that.”
“I’ll be your bodyguard when the time comes, Maki-kun!”
“If I’m free, I’ll help out too.”
…Being a guy who has to be protected by girls… yeah, it’s not the best feeling. Though, to be fair, it was the exact same situation from the very beginning.
“Thanks. Well, it’s going to be a long road ahead.”
After returning to Granzawall, we had dinner and quickly went to rest, preparing for the next day.
