Episode 87: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 25
The next day, Yuria joined the knights’ training, while Alicia and I were set to discuss future matters with Dietrich-sama. As we had been told the day before, the guards were informed, and we were able to enter the castle without delay. However, we were surprised by the unexpected person who greeted us.
“We have been expecting you all.”
“W-Wow, to have the Chancellor himself greet us, we are deeply honored.”
As I thought, Dietrich-sama was indeed the Chancellor.
“Think nothing of it. Also, Kondō-sama, the knight behind you will guide you to the knight’s training grounds.”
“I am Femie Rucola,”
The female knight introduced herself while bowing to Yuria.
“N-No, the pleasure is all mine! Thank you!”
“Now then, Kondō-sama, please follow me.”
“Understood. …Well, see you later.”
“Yeah, do your best.”
Yuria looked a bit anxious. So I saw her off with as much of a smile as I could manage.
“This way, please.”
Dietrich-sama led us in the opposite direction from Yuria. We walked down a hallway until we were shown into a room. It was a tidy and well-organized space, with not a speck of dust on the furniture. As I wondered if it was someone’s study, an unexpected figure emerged from a door at the far end of the room.
““Y-Your Majesty!?””
“Hahahaha! How do you like that, Dietrich? Surprising them is always fun!”
“Your Majesty, please stop with the jokes.”
“You’re no fun.”
Dietrich-sama looked incredibly tired as he gently rebuked His Majesty. What exactly is going on here? I glanced over at Alicia, but she looked just as confused as I felt.
“My apologies, Alicia-sama, Mihiro-sama.”
“Oh no, please don’t worry about us. But, why is Your Majesty here?”
“What do you mean ‘why’? This is my room.”
“”…Huh?””
I see. If we want an explanation for this situation, it seems we’ll need to ask someone else.
“Dietrich-sama…?”
“I sincerely apologize. His Majesty insisted on sitting in on this discussion.”
“Saying ‘insisted’ makes it sound like a bad thing.”
“Because it *is* a bad thing! Stop making excuses!”
…Wait, is this really the same king we met yesterday? His attitude, his demeanor—everything about him feels completely different.
“You seem surprised, but this is the real side of His Majesty.”
“So, the way he acted yesterday was just an act?”
“Dietrich forced me to show some authority.”
“It was necessary! In fact, I’d prefer you maintained that behavior even now!”
“It’s too late for that. Give it up.”
“...Sigh.”
Dietrich-sama must have it tough, I thought to myself.
“Well, no point in dwelling on it. Let’s get on with the discussion.”
“Thank you for your hard work, Dietrich-sama”
“…Thank you, Mihiro-sama.”
“What’s this? What are you two bonding over?”
His Majesty asked, looking a little left out. But I decided to ignore him for now. If there’s a problem, Dietrich-sama will point it out. And the discussion at hand is more important.
…Hey, Alicia, stop looking at me like that!
“First, let’s talk about the development of the Forest of Demons. I received a report from Glenn-sama recently. But if there’s been any progress since then, feel free to share.”
“Ah, yes, there has been.”
““So soon!?””
Wait, has it really been that short of a time…? Oh right, it’s only been about three days since Glenn’s report. No wonder they’re surprised by the progress.
“It’s nothing major. We’ve just been clearing out the magical beasts patrolling the forest near the settlement.”
“Even so, that’s quite an accomplishment!”
“By the way, may I ask what type of magical beasts you encountered?”
“Yes. Judge Ogres, Poison Snakes, Gigant Rats…”
As I listed off the monster names, the two gradually paled. By the end, they were covering their faces with their hands. Did I say something wrong?
“…Those are all monsters that normally require military forces to subdue.”
“And you’ve managed to wipe them out… within just a few days? That’s… terrifying.”
“What!? B-But, we’re doing this for the good of the country, not to build up military power or anything like that!”
Terrifying? Don’t tell me they’re thinking this could be some sort of rebellion!
“Relax. It’s nothing like that. We’re just shocked, that’s all.”
“But still, it seems the people of Granzawall have become quite strong.”
“It’s true that their levels have risen. But it’s largely thanks to the fruits everyone has been eating that temporarily boost their abilities.”
“Ah, yes! Those fruits! Alicia showed me one, and Dietrich even tried it himself. I was astonished that such a thing exists.”
“Indeed. Even after trying it myself, it’s still hard to believe.”
I appreciate the fact that they tested it out. But seriously, did Chancellor Dietrich-sama really need to try it himself? King, please think more carefully about who you have test things next time!!
