Episode 88: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 26
After that, I finished explaining the progress of clearing the Forest of Demons. I informed them that I had requested the cutting, management, and upkeep of the areas where the monsters had been eradicated.
For me, this had been part of my normal routine, but I never expected them to be so shocked. …Maybe I should take things more slowly from now on.
“So, how is the third daughter of the Maguire family, whom we sent over recently?”
“Leyreina-san? She’s been incredibly helpful and is doing a great job.”
“That’s good to hear. The Maguire family is renowned for their Mages, after all.”
…Wait a minute. Do His Majesty and Chancellor Dietrich-sama not know that Leyreina-san had been resented by her family? They ended the conversation with smiles on their faces.
Hmm, should I tell them the truth for Leyreina-san’s sake?
“…Well, it’s possible the Maguire family didn’t exactly send someone they considered valuable.”
After hearing that, the two of them, still smiling, froze instantly and turned their gazes toward me.
“Wait, Maki-san!”
“Hm? Ah, sorry. I just said that because Leyreina-san herself mentioned it. Please, don’t worry about it. Anyway, let’s focus on the matter at hand.”
“Wait a moment, Mihiro-sama! …What you just said, is it true?”
Dietrich-sama asked, looking confused. His Majesty didn’t say anything, but the air around him made it clear he expected me to elaborate.
“Well… it’s just Leyreina-san’s personal impression. I don’t know if it’s the truth, okay?”
“No problem. I order you to tell us.”
“Understood.”
So, I told them exactly what Leyreina-san had shared with me, without holding anything back.
The reason I prefaced it by saying it was her personal view was that, despite her feeling like a burden, I think her assignment to help develop the Forest of Demons was an excellent choice. She thought she’d been sent to Granzawall because her family wanted to get rid of her and was disappointed by the royal decree. But if the Maguire family head had chosen her because they knew she could be useful, the whole situation would be seen differently.
Whether it was an accident that turned out well or intentional, I made sure to explain both possibilities in my report.
“So, Leyreina thought that, huh.”
“It’s true that we can’t make any conclusions based solely on her words.”
“Right. The key issue is whether the Maguire family properly selected Leyreina-san for this royal decree or if they picked her as a convenient way to get rid of her due to resentment. Depending on that, it could change the entire situation, right?”
As Dietrich-sama had said from the beginning, this was a royal decree.
In the end, since Leyreina-san is proving to be highly useful, one could argue that there’s no problem. However, if it turns out the Maguire family did not properly fulfill the royal decree and only sent her as a form of punishment, their actions could be seen as disobedience. It might raise suspicion of treason.
“I don’t have the means to investigate further. But for Leyreina-san’s sake, I’d ask that you verify the facts and handle the Maguire family accordingly.”
I suggested that. Since this was a royal decree, there would likely be some sort of reward or consequence based on how they had complied.
Dietrich-sama understood my intent and nodded deeply.
“We will have time to investigate this before reporting any major results. If it turns out that they disregarded the royal decree and did not choose their envoy properly, appropriate punishment will be necessary.”
“Even if it comes to that, please don’t take Leyreina-san away. She’s really indispensable to us. I honestly don’t think we could manage without her.”
I made sure to emphasize this point.
Leyreina-san’s Erudite felt almost as exceptional as my own Appraiser (Divine Eye)’s skill. If she has the right information, she can deduce answers. It is much like how my skill reveals truths, even when I lack the knowledge myself. In that sense, you could call her skill a less powerful version of mine.
…… Huh? When you think about it, didn’t they send some seriously talented people from the capital to Granzawall? It’s not like they would take them back, right?
“Yes, rest assured. As long as Mihiro-sama and Alicia-sama have no objections, we have no plans to recall her.”
“Thank you.”
…Yeah. I’ll keep quiet about the Erudite skill. They might already know about it, but it made me anxious to even think about the possibilities!
