Episode 92: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 30
When we arrived at His Majesty’s room, naturally, His Majesty was there. I thought he’d be busy with state affairs, but maybe he had some free time.
“Oh! Mihiro, you’ve woken up!”
“Sorry for collapsing like that.”
I had collapsed in front of His Majesty, so I was worried I might be accused of disrespect or something.
“What are you talking about? I’m just glad you’re safe!”
Well, I guess with His Majesty, I wouldn’t have to worry about that. But the King of Shriden might do something like that, though.
“So, what brings you here today? You could’ve rested a little longer.”
I couldn’t exactly tell him that I felt uncomfortable resting in Dietrich-sama’s room. After all, His Majesty’s words are royal decrees.
“Your Majesty, according to Mihiro-sama, he’s figured out part of the method to acquire skills.”
“What!? Is that true, Mihiro?”
“Y-yes!”
“Y-Your Majesty! Shaking Mihiro-sama like that might make him collapse again!”
“O-oh, my apologies.”
“N-no, I’m fine.”
He grabbed my shoulders and shook me vigorously back and forth. I felt a little dizzy.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. After Dietrich-sama confirmed with HIs Majesty, he opened it.
“Maki!”
“Maki!”
“Alicia and Yuria? Thanks for coming—Buwaaahhh!!”
They both rushed toward me at once and grabbed my hands. But since I was still feeling wobbly, I fell back and landed on my butt.
“Ouch.”
“S-sorry, Maki-san!”
“I’m sorry, Maki! A-are you okay?”
“Y-yeah, I’m fine.”
Yuria extended a hand to help me up, and I grabbed it to stand.
…Wow. Yuria’s hands have gotten so rough. As expected of the Fist King, she’s been training really hard.
“U-um, Maki?”
“Hm? What is it?”
“C-could you, um, let go of my hand…?”
“…Oh! S-sorry!”
Ahhh, I messed up! Holding a girl’s hand, even if it’s Yuria, without a reason for that long is a no-go!
“No worries, I offered my hand in the first place.”
“…Thanks.”
Why does Yuria look a bit flustered, though?
“………Maki-san? Yuria-san?”
And then there’s Alicia, glaring at me from the side with a scary look in her eyes. Why? Why is she upset?
“Gahahaha! How amusing!”
“Hah! M-my apologies, Your Majesty!”
“No need for that! …So, Mihiro?”
“…Uh, even if you ask me…”
I should probably get the conversation back on track.
“Ahem! Um, Alicia, Yuria, do you know why you were called here?”
“No. Maki-san, we were only told that you had woken up and was waiting here.”
“I was really worried about you. So, what happened?”
“Sorry for the worry. The reason I called you both is… I’ve figured out part of the method to acquire skills.”
……Huh? Why are they both just frozen in place? A bit more reaction would’ve been nice.
“Maki-san! You used Appraisal again, didn’t you?”
“Seriously! What are you doing? You weren’t forced to do it, were you?”
“N-no! Don’t say such scary things, Yuria!”
If they think I was forced, this could become a serious issue of disrespect toward royalty!
“I figured it out when I collapsed! I think higher-level skills need more mana. The ones I’ve understood so far are probably lower-level skills.”
From there, I explained everything to the group.
I only figured out basic skills, like Swordsmanship and Spearmanship, which were easy to understand based on their names. But I didn’t figure out how to acquire more complex skills like Yuria’s Fighting Spirit, Madoka’s Mana Recovery, or Leyreina-san’s Erudite.
“I didn’t even figure out how to acquire the Magic Consumption Halving skill that I already have. So, I think it’s simply because I didn’t have enough mana.”
“Hmm. That seems like a likely explanation.”
“Yes, it seems that just having a skill doesn’t mean you automatically understand how to acquire it.”
“Exactly. By the way, were there any past cases of people acquiring skills like Swordsmanship or Spearmanship later in life?”
Surprisingly, the methods to acquire basic skills like these turned out to be relatively simple. Swordsmanship skills could be gained by doing thousands or even tens of thousands of practice swings or by defeating hundreds of magical beasts with a sword. The same applied to Spearmanship and other combat skills.
I thought knights in this kingdom might have unknowingly acquired skills through such training. But it seems my guess was wrong.
“At least, I’ve never heard of such cases. Knights usually choose weapons that match their skills and train with them, so they wouldn’t deliberately pick weapons they aren’t skilled with.”
“Ah, that makes sense.”
“They might use different weapons in emergencies. But since it’s only during emergencies, it would be difficult for them to perform the necessary number of practice swings or defeat enough magical beasts to acquire a new skill.”
For a knight, using a weapon means their life is at risk. In such situations, using a weapon they aren’t familiar with would be unthinkable.
“However, in remote villages where people may take up weapons outside their skills for self-defense. So it’s possible that such situations have occurred.”
“Yes, there are many places where our reach doesn’t extend.”
It’s not impossible that someone might unknowingly fulfill the requirements to acquire a skill without realizing it.
