Episode 95: A Life in Another World that is Far from Free 33
I couldn’t quite grasp what His Majesty was saying at first. And as I stood there, dumbfounded, he continued his explanation.
“A divine-class profession is a profession that possesses power on par with the gods.”
“…Power on par with the gods, you say…”
“It’s said that a defining feature of these jobs is that the word ‘Divine’ is included in their name.”
Appraiser (Divine Eye)… that’s literally what mine is. But honestly, the way it’s in parentheses makes it feel like an afterthought. Can this really be considered a divine-class profession?
“What’s the matter? You seem quite perplexed.”
“Well, of course I am. I was already surprised that there’s something above special-class professions, which I thought were the highest. And now you’re telling me *I* have that divine-class profession? That’s a lot to process.”
“Indeed, I can understand that. Even I had to investigate further after receiving Alicia’s report.”
If His Majesty himself had to look into it, it means that professions bearing the title of ‘Divine’ haven’t appeared for a long time. Thinking about it that way, I wonder what the king of the Kingdom of Shriden would think if he knew this. Personally, I’d love to tell him “Serves you right.” But with my classmates on their side, I can’t exactly gloat openly.
I’d at least like to help Arata. But since he’s also got a special-class profession, it’s highly likely he’s being used like a puppet. If I could either defeat their leader or find a way to break the magic controlling him, I might stand a chance. But to even figure that out, I’d need to infiltrate the Kingdom of Shriden and use my Appraisal there.
“…Well, for now, the priority is leveling up.”
“What’s on your mind?”
“Oh, nothing important. Anyway, is that Level Slime weak enough for me to defeat?”
I shifted the conversation back to the main issue: leveling up. Even if I managed to locate the Level Slime, it would be pointless if I couldn’t defeat it. I asked, somewhat fearing the possibility of getting killed. But it seemed my concerns were unnecessary.
“Rest assured, the Level Slime is weak, much like a regular Slime. As long as you’re properly equipped, you won’t be killed by it.”
“…Is that so?”
“I will accompany you as your escort, so you needn’t worry.”
“Huh? D-Dietrich-sama, you’re going to be my escort?”
I felt a bit guilty about having the chancellor of the kingdom act as my bodyguard, but there was a good reason behind it.
“The location of the Northern Cave is only known to a select few. His Majesty cannot act as your guide, and the royal family members are similarly restricted.”
Yeah, that makes sense.
“Therefore, as I’ve been to the Northern Cave before with His Majesty’s permission, I’ll serve as both your guide and escort.”
“I see… Thank you very much.”
“No need to thank me. Besides, I’m quite curious as well.”
“Curious about what?”
“How powerful you, a divine-class profession holder, will become.”
How powerful I’ll become? I’m not originally a combat-type, so I don’t think I’ll become all that strong. But there’s no need to say that out loud. For now, as long as my mana increases along with my level, that’ll be enough for me.
“Since you exhausted your mana today, how about we begin tomorrow?”
“That’s fine. Alicia, what will you do?”
“I—I can’t go to the Northern Cave!”
“That’s true. Alicia-sama has been of great help. But revealing the royal family’s secrets to anyone might… well, in the worst-case scenario, it could cost you your life.”
…Hey, Dietrich-sama, are you aware that you’ve just pointed out that *I* could also be targeted?
“I plan to stay with Yuria-san.”
“Th-thank you, Alicia-san!”
“Good luck with your training, Yuria!”
Ah, yep, she’s definitely abandoning me. She’s not even looking in my direction. But, well, I can’t really complain when it comes to matters involving royal secrets.
“Then, how about tomorrow I visit the castle with Alicia first, and go from there?”
“That sounds good. For now, please take your time and rest today.”
“What about your training, Yuria?”
“Since it’s the first day, they let me finish early. Fighting people is so much harder than fighting monsters!”
As Yuria stretched her shoulders and said that, I realized that I, too, had to steel myself for what lay ahead as I left the castle.
