Episode 139: An Unexpected Survival Life 10
Seeing me struggling with the decision, Moriya made a surprising suggestion.
“…If you want, I can try to contact your acquaintances?”
“If only that were possible. We’re not in Japan, you know?”
“Oh, I can contact them.”
“If you could do that, we wouldn’t be having such a hard time….. Wait, what?”
His unexpected statement left me momentarily speechless. It took me a while to fully comprehend what Moriya had just said.
“…You can contact them?”
“Yep! Though it’s not through phone or email.”
“Then how would you do it?”
“The closest thing to something in Japan would be… well, a letter, I guess.”
“‘A letter?’”
Both Madoka and Arata, like me, tilted their heads in confusion.
Even if it’s a letter, there’s no one to deliver it. How would he send a letter, anyway?
“Hehehe, I’ll use this!”
Moriya chuckled excitedly and pulled out a single sheet of paper.
“…….You write the letter on that?”
“That’s right! How about we test it by sending it to someone here?”
“…….Send it?”
With that, Moriya stood up, opened the window, and walked out of the house.
We were left looking at each other in confusion, not sure what to make of the situation.
“…W-What do we do?”
“Yeah, I don’t really know what to say.”
“For now, we might as well wait for Moriya-san to come back.”
Madoka’s suggestion made sense. But sitting around doing nothing was a bit dull. While I was thinking that, we suddenly heard a noise approaching from outside.
“…What is that?”
“…A bird?”
“…Could it be… an origami crane?”
“…Origami crane?”
Shin and I echoed the same words in disbelief as the source of the sound flew through the window Moriya had left open.
Sure enough, it was an origami crane. It was flapping its paper wings as it flew toward us.
“……Is this Moriya-san’s communication method?”
“……Seems like it. Look at this.”
“What’s this?”
The origami crane landed on the table, unfolded itself, and reverted to its original form as a sheet of paper. Written on it, likely by Moriya, were the words:
“…‘Mail Bird’, Mihiro Maki.’”
“Is that its name?”
“It looks like we could use this to contact Kondō, Alicia-san, and the others.”
As we discussed the Mail Bird, Moriya returned. His bones clattered as he approached us.
“How was my Mail Bird?”
“Yeah, it seems like we can use this to contact Alicia and the others.”
“Glad to hear it! So, what will you do? If you want to learn, I’m more than willing to teach.”
“Mihiro-kun, please! I don’t want to cause any more trouble for everyone!”
No one thought of her as a burden. But being able to learn from Moriya, a ‘divine-class’ Mage (Divine Magus), was too good to pass up.
Not only would it help Madoka level up, but we might also gain new knowledge we didn’t have before. Plus, if Alicia and the others knew we were safe, they wouldn’t need to send out a search party.
“…Alright. Moriya, could I ask for your help?”
“Of course! Besides, I don’t want you to end up like me.”
“…Are you talking about the betrayal?”
“Haha, no, that’s not it.”
Moriya laughed and continued speaking.
“I’ve lived alone in the Forest of Demons for a long time. It was my choice, so I have no complaints. But I don’t want anyone else to have to do the same.”
“…Moriya.”
“Not just Maki-kun, but Arata-kun and Madoka-chan too. I’ll teach you everything I can so you won’t end up alone.”
All that came alongside Moriya’s words were only clattering sounds from his bones. But strangely enough, I couldn’t help but feel like he was smiling kindly at us.
