Episode 143: An Unexpected Survival Life 13
It has been five days since we arrived at Moriya’s house. During this time, Madoka has been learning magic from Moriya, just as she had asked. I couldn’t help but wonder if learning magic was really as simple as just being taught. But it seems that the skills one has already acquired play a big role.
In Madoka’s case, she’s mastered magic skills of all elements, which is why she’s able to learn magic from Moriya. If I could also acquire magic skills, I could probably use my excessive amount of mana for something other than just Appraisal. But unfortunately, I still don’t know how to obtain magic skills. So there’s not much I can do about it right now.
I thought about using Appraisal specifically for the method of acquiring magic skills. But without the magic-boosting bananas, Madoka and the others stopped me. They said they didn’t want any uncertain factors involved. If we’re talking about uncertainty, Moriya himself seems like a bigger uncertain factor to me. But since they’re concerned, I couldn’t just reject it.
“Alright, we’re off.”
“Be careful. And make sure to take good care of him, okay?”
“Woof woof!”
It’s not just Madoka who’s getting trained here. Arata has also decided to work on leveling up. However, with Arata’s current strength, hunting the monsters in this area alone is difficult. And I’m not much help either. In fact, Arata is already clearly stronger than me.
So, a companion is going with Arata for his leveling-up efforts.
“I’m counting on you today too, Haku.”
“Woof woof!”
At Arata’s feet is a beast that resembles a wolf with beautiful, pure white fur, waiting eagerly with its tongue out. When standing on all fours, it’s about as tall as Arata’s waist. At first glance, you might mistake it for a large dog. But Haku’s strength is guaranteed by Moriya himself.
I’ve seen it with my own eyes. And honestly, I don’t think I stand a chance. Even Arata has said the same.
One moment, Haku steps forward. And before you know it, he’s already several meters ahead, leaving a not-so-small hole in the ground where he once stood. If he swings his front paws, he can shatter large trees with ease. And when he bit into a monster more than twice his size, he crushed not just its hide and flesh, but its bones too, taking it down in an instant.
When I Appraised him, I was frozen for a moment by the absurd level of 150 that appeared. It turns out that Haku is a familiar of Moriya’s. I was amazed that a Mage (Divine Magus) could even tame magical beasts. But because of that, I can let Arata go without any worries.
I’d love to level up too. But even with Haku’s help, it’s impossible for me to defeat the monsters around here with my current strength. So I’ve given up. I’ll just focus on leveling up steadily after we return to Granzawall.
“Well then, time for me to get to work!”
After stretching in front of the entrance, I returned to the house and settled into a chair that had pretty much become my usual spot. On the table in front of me were a sheet of paper, some blue ink, and a brush.
What I’m about to do is—
“Let’s make a magic tool!”
That’s right, I’m going to create a magic tool. On the first night when Madoka’s training started, I asked Moriya to teach me how to make magic tools. It was only the basics. But even so, the fact that I could make magic tools on my own now was surprising. Just that alone could be enough to make a fortune.
If something like the Mail Bird magic tool were to become widespread, its demand would be unimaginable. Even if I can’t make something that advanced, I’d be thrilled to create tools that could make life a bit more convenient—or even better, tools that would allow me to defeat monsters. It’d make leveling up so much easier.
“Still, the biggest problem with making magic tools is gathering the materials, isn’t it?”
When Moriya explained it to me, I was honestly surprised. After all, the basic materials needed to create magic tools were just blue ink and a brush. But of course, these weren’t just any ordinary ink or brush. The materials needed to make them were rare and dangerous to obtain.
“You need the bl00d of a monster that’s level 100 or higher for the blue ink, and the brush needs hair from a level 100 or higher monster. The handle part of the brush also has to be made from an ultra-hard material that can withstand being infused with high-density mana, right?”
The brush that Moriya actually uses is made from Haku’s fur for the bristle part, and the handle is made of 100% pure mithril, which has been heavily compressed. When I first heard the word “mithril”, I was excited to encounter a classic fantasy term from another world. But after learning how valuable it was, I became nervous about even holding the brush for a while. Supposedly, just one of these brushes is worth about half the national budget of a large country from the time when Moriya was still alive.
And yet, Moriya casually lent it to me with a simple “Go ahead and use it!”
Don’t just lend out something so valuable so easily!
As for the blue ink, it’s made from the bl00d of monsters level 100 or higher, hunted around here. Though this is also valuable, after hearing that the brush alone is worth half a country’s budget, I didn’t feel particularly awed by it anymore.
“Alright, let’s start by practicing with the Mail Bird,”
I muttered to myself. Taking the brush, I dipped its bristles into the blue ink and slowly lifted it. I then began moving it across the paper.
