Episode 144: An Unexpected Survival Life 14
According to Moriya, the most crucial part of creating a magic tool is clearly defining the intended effect. For example, if you simply want to “create fire”, you need to be specific about the circumstances, the required firepower, and the activation conditions. Neglecting these details can lead to a faulty magic tool that either fails to activate when needed, produces uncontrollable firepower, or activates unexpectedly at inconvenient times.
Since I don’t want to create defective magic tools, I made sure to follow the specific conditions Moriya mentioned. For the Mail Bird I’m working on, it turns out there are quite a few detailed conditions involved. One thing that surprised me the most is that the tool needs to accurately read the user’s thoughts to determine the recipient. It is a key feature to prevent misdelivery.
“Yeah, if that part were vague, you wouldn’t be able to handle important messages properly.”
In the past, Moriya’s Mail Bird was highly valued as a communication tool for those in the Forest of Demons. Not only was it designed to prevent misdelivery, but it also had defense mechanisms to avoid being shot down or stolen.
“Well, since this is just for practice, we’re skipping that part for now.”
Yes, the Mail Bird I’m making is merely for practice. The focus is only on preventing misdelivery, and there’s no consideration for its defense capabilities. I don’t have the confidence to fully draw out the magic circle needed for it to function as a proper magic tool if I include too many features.
“I think I could manage with a workaround. But I really want to try making it with my own power first.”
When I modified the teleportation magic circle, the necessary corrections were displayed on the screen. Similarly, if I use Appraisal on the magic circle, it would probably guide me on how to draw it correctly. However, what’s most important now is whether I can draw it myself.
If I can’t even draw a simplified magic circle, then there’s no way I’ll be able to complete a more complex one, even with the guidance from the display. So, I started drawing the magic circle Moriya taught me from scratch. I was so focused that I lost track of time.
After finishing, I looked up to see Moriya watching my work from across the table.
“Whoa!?”
“Hm? What’s wrong?”
“When did you get here?”
“I’ve been here for quite a while.”
“…I see.”
Wow, I didn’t notice at all.
“Wait, where’s Madoka?”
“She’s out training with Arata-kun and Haku. It’s important not to overdo it. But with her vast mana reserves, she should be fine.”
Madoka’s personality can be a bit worrisome at times. But with Arata around, it should be okay. He’ll likely serve as a good restraint if needed.
“You were really focused there.”
“……Are you teasing me?”
“Nope, I’m genuinely complimenting you.”
Given that I hadn’t noticed him at all, it felt like teasing. But it didn’t seem like that was his intent. While I was pondering that, Moriya took the paper with the completed magic circle and held it up to the light.
It seems the blue ink has a particular characteristic—although the drawing remains visible for a few minutes after you start, it eventually fades, making it look like nothing was ever written. This explains why none of us noticed the magic circle drawn on the Mail Bird we sent to Alicia earlier.
“You’ve done a great job with it. I’d say it’s good enough to pass.”
“Really? That’s a relief.”
“Although, as I mentioned before, this is a much-simplified version of the magic circle. So the paper’s durability is the only protection it has. You won’t be able to use it around here.”
I already knew that. If I were to use it, it would be to test whether it works by sending it to Madoka or Arata, or maybe after leaving the Forest of Demons.
Looking out the window, I realized the sun had moved. Though I had started the task in the morning, sunlight was now streaming in from the western window.
GROOOOOWL…
…I can’t believe I skipped lunch.
“You know, Madoka-chan and Arata-kun have already finished eating, right?”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Well, because Madoka-chan told me to let you be since you were so focused.”
…Damn! Just when I was about to complain to Moriya, it turns out it was Madoka’s suggestion.
“Madoka-chan’s words make everything forgivable, huh?”
“Shut it.”
“Come on now, don’t get mad. I’ve got your portion ready too.”
Moriya chuckled as he stood up and brought me some reheated food from the kitchen.
“…Thanks.”
“You’re welcome! Next time, I think I’ll teach you a magic circle with defensive properties. But keep in mind, it’ll use the creator’s mana. So the strength of the defense depends on how much mana you use. Be careful, okay?”
“Got it.”
“Are you sure? If you’re careless, you could end up collapsing from magic depletion.”
“Yes, yes. …Can I eat now?”
My stomach is at its limit!
