Two days after sending out a Mail Bird, we received a reply from Alicia and the others.  

The message detailed various things: how Yuria had said she would search for us after our transfer, how they were maintaining the settlement we all worked to develop, and more, despite only a few days having passed.  

What delighted us the most was the news that Leyreina-san had activated the Transfer Shrine and called for reinforcements.  

Currently, Akigase-sensei is informed of the situation. She is staying in the post town. They reassured us that everything was under control and encouraged us to focus on leveling up.  

This was the perfect opportunity for Madoka and Arata to concentrate on leveling up. But I faced a different problem with my own progress.  

“Appraisal: Level Up.”  

My level was stuck at 12, and I desperately wanted to increase it significantly here. However, without fruits around, leveling up seemed nearly impossible… Wait, huh?  

“………The display changed?”  

Until yesterday, everything showed as 0%, indicating that my strength couldn’t even pierce through the outer hide of magical beasts. But now, something was different.  

“…‘Familiar Contract’?”  

No way! Could the Familiar Contract, which I’ve always wanted, be the key to leveling up?  

Unable to sit still, I immediately headed to where Moriya was. He was likely with Madoka  

“Moriya!”  

“Hm? What’s up, Maki-kun?”  

“Give me a familiar!”  

“…Whoa, hold up, isn’t this a bit sudden?”  

“I need it for leveling up!”  

“What do you mean, Maki-kun?”  

Both Moriya and Madoka looked puzzled, so I explained the results of my Appraisal.  

Understanding the reason, Moriya clapped his hands and gave a knowing look.  

“Oh, I see now.”  

“Did you figure something out?”  

“When you form a Familiar Contract, a portion of the experience points the familiar gains is shared with the contractor.”  

“Why didn’t you tell me something so important earlier?!”  

“Well, even then, the shared amount is so small that it won’t help much for someone with a divine-class profession to gain the experience they need to level up.”  

………Still, if that’s the case, why did it show up in my Appraisal results?  

I took another look at the Appraisal details and noticed something I had missed in my excitement.  

“The familiar I need to contract with is… what?! An Ancient Crystal Dragon?!”  

“Whoa, isn’t that the legendary dragon deep in the Forest of Demons?”  

The Appraisal provided these details:  

[Undead monsters exposed to the sacred light of the Ancient Crystal Dragon die automatically. After forming a Familiar Contract, simply move it to where the undead reside, and you’ll level up automatically]  

…No way. That’s impossible.  

Even though the success rate was 100%, forming a Familiar Contract with the Ancient Crystal Dragon in the first place was completely out of the question.  

Just to be sure, I Appraised the probability of forming a Familiar Contract on the spot. Even with Moriya’s help, it was less than 1%.  

“To be honest, I think it’s amazing that it’s even remotely possible.”  

“I can’t follow this conversation at all.” 

“……Looks like I’ll have to grind experience points the hard way.”  

In the worst-case scenario, I could beg His Majesty to let me hunt Level Slimes. But that would only increase my debts to him. If anything happened, I’d risk being saddled with unreasonable demands.  

Well, I doubt His Majesty or Dietrich-sama would ever impose something like that, but accumulating too many favors never sits well with me.  

“Hm, there are other familiars, but Haku is the only high-level one we’ve got right now.”  

“Ugh, seriously?”  

“But, if you’re interested, I know a familiar that might become even stronger than Haku in the future—”  

“Please! It sounds fun to grow stronger together!”  

Trying to make it a more exciting adventure might actually work! Though, honestly, I just want a familiar!  

“Really? Oh, while we’re at it, why don’t we give Madoka a familiar too?”  

“Eh? Really?!”  

“Of course! It wouldn’t be fair to leave someone out, would it?”  

Though initially delighted, Madoka’s smile faded at the mention of “leaving someone out.”  

“Huh? What’s wrong?”  

“……I think I’ll pass.”  

“What?! Why?! That’s such a waste!”  

“Maki-kun, could you keep quiet for a moment?”  

Moriya, that’s kind of harsh, don’t you think?  

“If I take a familiar too, Yuria-chan might feel left out.”  

“I’ve heard the name ‘Yuria-chan’ from time to time. Was she summoned as a hero too?”  

“Yes, she’s my best friend.”  

“I see. Madoka-chan, you’re so kind. Compared to you, Maki-kun is…”  

Gah!?  

Look, I’m just trying to level up, okay? Could you cut me some slack here?  

“Still, if that’s the case, there’s nothing to worry about.”  

“Huh?”  

“When you guys return, if you come see me again, I’ll give that Yuria girl a familiar too.”  

“R-Really?!”  

“Of course. Later, could you also tell me more about this Yuria-chan?”

“Yes! Thank you so much!”  

……Somehow, the conversation progressed without my input. But since we’ll be getting familiars, I guess this worked out for the best?
