Episode 149: An Unexpected Survival Life 19
The day after I received the familiar from Moriya, I decided to head into the forest with Arata.
Having Sunny with me didn’t mean my leveling would progress smoothly. My strength still wasn’t enough to face the beasts in the area.
Still, the reason for heading to the forest was not for my leveling but for Sunny’s.
“Having Haku should make it fine. But Mihiro, be careful, alright?”
“I know. I don’t want to die either.”
“Woof! Woof!”
“Pikyah!”
When I nodded at Arata’s warning, Haku and Sunny let out energetic cries, as if pledging to fight for me.
If we had some fruit, the situation might improve a little. Of course, wishing for what’s unavailable doesn’t help. But since we’re already deep in the Forest of Demons, it’s only natural to want to take down at least one beast.
Frankly, not thinking that way would be strange.
“Pikyah! Pikya pikya!”
“Sunny, are you saying you’ll get strong quickly?”
“Pikyah!”
“Alright, I’m counting on you.”
Seeing Sunny flapping its wings in front of me lifted my spirits a little.
Sunny then flew higher and perched on my head, patting me gently.
…W-what a kind soul you are, Sunny!
“…You know, this isn’t so bad after all.”
“Pikyah?!”
Sunny seemed displeased with my relaxed attitude, crying out in a strange voice.
Though it might not be fair to say this about a magical beast, Sunny seemed to have a pretty combative personality.
“Mihiro, focus. We’re about to enter an area with beasts.”
While I was caught up in my warm feelings, Arata called out.
That’s right; we were in the Forest of Demons, hunting magical beasts.
“Got it. Appraisal: Locate Magical Beasts.”
Using Appraisal, I found that just ahead in the forest, five beasts were lurking.
When I shared this information, Arata declared he would take them down.
“You think we can manage? These guys are around level 90, and one of them is 105.”
“I couldn’t do it alone. But with Haku, it’s possible. It’ll take some time, but we’ll manage.”
“No way, that’s impressive.”
Checking Arata’s stats for the first time in a while, I saw his level had risen significantly to 30.
His Strength stat was over 600, making him practically a monster himself.
And yet, there were still beasts he couldn’t defeat—what a terrifying place.
With my measly 120 Strength, I’d be useless. Even if I ate fruit to boost my stats, I’d need to eat a lot. And there’s no way my stomach could handle that.
“Well, if the beasts’ Endurance is over 1000, even Arata’s stats wouldn’t cut it.”
“Haku is just too strong.”
“Woof, woof!”
“…P-Pikyah!”
Oh no, Sunny seemed upset that only Haku was being praised.
But Sunny’s level was still 20, much lower compared to the other familiars.
Even so, its stats were higher than mine.
“That said, Sunny, you still can’t take on the beasts here alone. Be careful, alright?”
“…Pikya pikya!”
“No, not ‘I’ll try hard’. I mean *be careful*.”
“…Pik…”
“Don’t look away! Face me and answer properly.”
“…….Pikyah.”
I wonder if Sunny truly understood.
When I exchanged glances with Arata, we both let out small sighs.
Meanwhile, Haku seemed determined to carry the burden, snorting loudly.
“For now, Haku will weaken the beasts first. Once Haku signals, Arata will attack. And if there’s an opponent Sunny can handle, we’ll leave it to Sunny. Sounds good?”
“Yeah. Sorry to push you so hard today too, Haku. You good with that?”
“Woof, woof!”
Haku wagged its head eagerly while being patted on the head, clearly enjoying the attention.
Sunny likely wanted to join in, but that would have to wait until its level increased.
“Alright, Haku—go!”
“GRAAAAAH!”
With a roar, a faint chill emanated from Haku’s beautiful white fur.
The air around us cooled slightly, turning refreshing despite the earlier warmth.
Now that I think about it, Haku’s Appraisal had identified its species as an Ice Fenrir.
Haku leaped forward, vanishing in an instant, and cries rang out from where the beasts had been hiding.
“Alright, I’m going in too.”
“You’re quick!”
“Am I? Well, I’ve gotten used to this by now!”
Saying that, Arata charged in, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
I, meanwhile, confirmed the Appraisal results while advancing cautiously, with Sunny perched on my head.
Less than a minute had passed since the battle began. Yet thanks to Haku’s efforts, the fight was already over in the blink of an eye.
“Uh… what is this exactly?”
“Pikyah!”
To my surprise, there lay the level 105 magical beast, completely encased in ice.
“Haku must’ve saved it for Sunny.”
“…Are you serious?”
“Woof, woof!”
“Pikyah! …PIIIIIIIII—KYAAAAHHHH!”
“IT’S HOOOOOOTTT!?”
Suddenly, Sunny unleashed a fiery breath right from atop my head.
Naturally, I felt an intense heat above me and let out a scream.
Although everything didn’t burn to ash, my bangs—despite not being directly hit—ended up singed and frizzy.
“…S-Sunny!”
“Pikyah! Pikyah-pikyah!”
Seemingly delighted by the level-up, Sunny jumped off my head and started performing an odd little dance right in front of me.
…D-darn it! That happy little figure—how adorable! I can’t even be mad at you!
