Episode 150: An Unexpected Survival Life 20
After spending some time leveling up Sunny, we returned to Moriya’s house.
Sunny’s level eventually reached 24. But considering we defeated quite a few level 90 magical beasts, only gaining four levels felt underwhelming.
Well, given that Arata has been leveling up here for quite a while and has only gained 12 levels from where he started, I guess this isn’t too bad in comparison.
“Just like how humans have ranks in their professions, magical beasts also have ranks, you know.”
“””…Wait, really?”””
During dinner that evening, Moriya casually dropped this bit of information as if it were common knowledge. Naturally, the three of us were unfamiliar with the concept. We all voiced our surprise simultaneously.
“Of course! I mean, who decided that magical beasts wouldn’t have ranks when humans do?”
“Uh, isn’t it because magical beasts are inherently recognized as enemies to be defeated?”
“Enemies to be defeated, huh…”
When I shared this typical perspective, Moriya folded his arms and began pondering.
To be fair, seeing creatures like Sunny, Haku, and Gregori, I sometimes feel they could coexist with humans due to their charm. But that’s because of the Familiar Contract we’ve formed with them.
If they had been regular magical beasts facing us in battle, they would undoubtedly attack without hesitation.
“…Isn’t that how it is?”
“Well, you’re not entirely wrong. But there are magical beasts with high intelligence that can communicate with us humans.”
“……..Magical beasts like that exist?”
“I’ve never heard of such a thing!”
The notion of magical beasts capable of conversing with humans left both Madoka and Arata astounded.
For me, the idea of intelligent magical beasts seemed like a familiar trope. So my curiosity was more piqued by the concept of magical beast ranks.
“So, are these ranks something humans arbitrarily decided, like adventurer ranks?”
“Nope! It’s more like the intrinsic rank of their existence. As I mentioned, it’s akin to human profession ranks.”
“…So, like beginner beasts, lower beasts, something like that?”
“Exactly! For example, Gregori is an intermediate-tier magical beast, Haku is an advanced-tier magical beast, and Sunny is a special-tier magical beast.”
Upon hearing their names, the three familiars turned to us, tilting their heads in curiosity.
That simple gesture was incredibly cute, but… Sunny, you’re special-tier?
“………Wait, could it be that because you’re special-tier, it’s harder for your level to go up?”
“That’s right! Arata’s levels haven’t skyrocketed either, right? It’s the same principle.”
When Moriya assured me that Sunny would become undeniably powerful, it was likely due to this special-tier status.
If Sunny reached level 150, like Haku, just how strong would it become?
“I’d personally be grateful if Sunny grows alongside you, Maki-kun.”
“…Well, he’s already level 24, though?”
“Ah… but that’s because the magical beasts around here have such high levels!”
“Yeah, I get that, but still!”
“Come on now. Besides, this means Arata-kun and you, Maki-kun, will find it easier to level up as well. So, let’s be patient!”
“Arata, I understand. He’s a Sword Saint. But me? I can’t fight on my own; there’s no way.”
“That’s not true! After all, you’ve made Familiar Contracts, haven’t you? The experience points get shared.”
“…Wait, what?”
“…Huh? Maki-kun, didn’t you tell them?”
Well, sure, I knew about that. But why would that responsibility fall on me?
“Why do *I* have to be the one to explain it? That’s your job, Moriya!”
“…Wait, really?”
“Of course! I don’t even know much about Familiar Contracts myself!”
Madoka and Arata nodded in agreement with my statement.
“B-but, in my time, it was normal to walk around town with familiars. Familiars were just an ordinary part of life!”
“Maybe that was the case back then, but things are different now! There aren’t any familiars in Granzawall, which manages the Demon Forest, and there wasn’t a trace of them in the royal capital either!”
“Ah….. hmm, I see. The world has really become a much smaller place, hasn’t it?”
Moriya seemed to be deep in thought. But does a world without familiars really feel so small?
“…I see… yeah, yeah, it’s definitely *their* fault.”
Then, as if reaching some private conclusion, Moriya nodded to himself.
“What’s up?”
“Hmm? Oh, it’s nothing. I was just reminiscing about someone from the past.”
That “someone” was almost certainly the ones who betrayed Moriya.
Maybe they were the ones who proclaimed magical beasts should be eradicated, sparking reforms from the days when familiars roamed freely.
If we ever get the chance to visit the royal capital, maybe I should ask Dietrich-sama about it.
“More importantly, let’s talk about what’s next! I appreciate you all staying here with me, but you can’t stay forever, right?”
It was a rather forced shift in topic. But if Moriya didn’t want to discuss it, I couldn’t push him further.
With post-dinner drinks in hand, we decided to follow Moriya’s suggestion and discuss our plans going forward.
