Episode 151: An Unexpected Survival Life 21
Moriya’s topic about “what’s next” revolved around how long we would stay here.
Indeed, we couldn’t remain away from Granzawall indefinitely. If we didn’t return, we wouldn’t be able to make progress in reclaiming the Forest of Demons.
With our familiars, we should be able to handle the pioneering work. But everyone’s levels might not be sufficient to maintain it afterward. That’s why we needed to return as soon as possible to continue developing the area and raising everyone’s levels.
—
“How long has it been now? About two weeks?”
“Yeah, sounds about right.”
“If we aim for a nice round period, would one month make sense?”
“So, assuming we go with a month, that leaves about two more weeks.”
If we were to stay for a month, we had already passed the halfway mark.
I wanted to keep learning about creating magical tools, but what about Madoka and Arata?
“I’d like to keep learning more about magical tools. What about you two?”
“My Light Magic leveled up to 5, but none of my other skills have improved. I’d like to keep learning from Taiku-san.”
“I’d prefer to keep leveling up with Haku as much as possible.”
“Hmm, then how about… extending it to two or three months?”
I crossed my arms and started to think.
While I wanted to reunite with Alicia and the others, it felt like a waste to return without achieving something significant.
If staying here for two or three months wouldn’t jeopardize the maintenance of the reclaimed areas, I was okay with extending the stay.
“…Alright. Appraise: Reclamation Maintenance Status and Duration.”
This was where the Appraisal skill came in handy.
According to the results, maintaining progress was feasible for one month, two months, or even three months. Beyond that, however, fatigue would accumulate among the team. It would significantly increase the likelihood of injuries.
Factoring this in, three months seemed to be the maximum amount of time we could afford to stay and learn.
“Then, unless Alicia sends an urgent message, let’s stay here for up to three months to learn.”
“And if a message does come?”
“We’d pause our training and head back, right?”
Madoka and Arata asked, and I nodded firmly.
“You can count on me. I’ll use a teleportation magic circle to send you back to where you came from.”
“Wait, you can do that?”
“Well, I am a divine-class Mage, after all. No problem at all!”
I was left speechless at the sheer absurdity. A divine-class Mage far outclassed my divine-class Appraisal skill.
“So, can we assume tomorrow and onward will proceed as usual for now?”
“Looking forward to it.”
“Please take care of us, Taiku-san!”
“Haku, I’m counting on you too.”
“Woof, woof!”
“Pikyaa–!”
“…..!”
Everyone gave their replies, and Moriya nodded, seemingly satisfied.
“Now that we’ve set a deadline, I’ll have to reconsider my teaching strategy for Madoka-chan.”
“Why’s that?”
“Well, I initially thought the training period might be shorter. So I was focusing on teaching magic that could be used immediately. But since we have some leeway, I was thinking of having you try more challenging spells.”
Hearing the words “challenging spells”, I noticed a slight tension in Madoka’s posture.
“……..Isn’t that dangerous?”
“Well, strong magic always carries some risk. But isn’t it safer to learn it under guidance rather than attempting it alone later on?”
Moriya had a point. When Madoka eventually tried to study magic on her own, having had a mentor would make a significant difference.
If there was ever a time to learn powerful and complex magic, it was now, with Moriya around.
“……..Could you teach me, Taiku-san?”
“Of course, I don’t mind. But you’re the one who needs to be careful, Madoka-chan.”
“I understand. But if I don’t push through here, I won’t be able to help everyone.”
Ugh, not this again.
It wasn’t as if any of us thought Madoka was a burden.
“Hey, Madoka. None of us think you’re a liability, you know? In fact, your magic has been a huge help.”
“Exactly. You’ve taken down more beasts with your magic than I have with my sword. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”
Both Arata and I voiced the same sentiment.
But Madoka shook her head, her eyes filled with determination as she looked at us.
“I know you all think that way, and I’m grateful. But when Maki-kun saved me, I caused so much trouble back then. That’s why I have to work harder to make up for it.”
…Well, I had no rebuttal to that.
It was because of that incident that I decided to help Madoka and the others. But at the time, it had been a tough decision.
Arata didn’t know the details, so I had to say something here.
“…Fine. But don’t overdo it, alright?”
“Thank you, Maki-kun!”
“And Moriya, I’m counting on you to look after Madoka.”
“Leave it to me!”
Madoka smiled brightly, and Moriya rattled his bones in satisfaction.
………This teacher-student duo might actually get along better than I thought.
