Episode 167: An Unexpected Survival Life 35
The next day. As planned, I departed for the royal capital early in the morning.
This time, since we traveled in a small group, the journey that had taken two days previously was completed in just one day.
When we headed straight for the royal castle, the gatekeepers opened the gates easily.
I wasn’t sure if it was because they had been informed of my arrival or because I had visited enough times for them to recognize me.
Though honestly, I wasn’t sure how I felt about that level of laxity.
But for now, I decided to appreciate the skipped formalities.
“Oh! You’ve returned, Mihiro!”
As soon as we met, His Majesty greeted me with those words. And I felt genuinely grateful for his concern.
“I heard from Alicia that you encountered Taiku Moriya.”
“I’m truly relieved to see you safe, Mihiro-sama,”
Dietrich-sama said while looking visibly at ease.
From my perspective, I had been relying on Moriya’s help ever since I was teleported. So I hadn’t really faced any particularly dangerous situations.
However, hearing that I had met Moriya might have made them prepare for the worst regarding my fate.
“I have something I’d like to discuss regarding that matter. When would it be convenient for you to make time?”
“”Right now!””
“Don’t you have official duties to attend to?”
“”Not a problem!””
“…..Ah, well, understood.”
Since they both insisted, I convinced myself it must indeed be fine and began recounting my experiences after the teleportation and my encounters with Moriya.
They listened attentively without interrupting, even as I explained that Moriya was an otherworlder like me, with a personality far removed from the demonic image they might expect.
Although, to be fair, he does look like a skeleton.
However, I understood that it wouldn’t be easy to overturn deeply ingrained beliefs.
The two of them wore troubled expressions as they pondered over my account.
“Hmmm… Still, I find it hard to believe right away.”
“Indeed. I’ve never heard of such a thing before, either.”
“In fact, Moriya even gave me one of his familiars.”
“Pikyah!”
Hoping to aid my persuasion, I introduced Sunny, who was perched on my head.
Well, they had already been glancing toward my head occasionally during our conversation. So it seemed they were curious about it.
“That creature! Couldn’t it be proof that he’s a demon, capable of commanding magical beasts? I’ve never heard or read anything about familiars being a part of daily life, even in the royal capital’s Grand Library!”
Oh no, did that backfire?
“But Sunny listens to my commands and doesn’t harm people, I assure you.”
“Pikya!”
“Dietrich-sama, is Taiku Moriya really such a terrifying figure in the records?”
At this point, Alicia spoke up.
Since her parents hadn’t told her that Moriya was a demon, she seemed puzzled as to why the two were so troubled.
“Alicia-sama, you weren’t told about this?”
“Actually, my parents never said anything about Taiku Moriya being a demon or an evil presence.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. If my memory serves, I think my parents once said something along these lines: ‘We alone must ensure the truth is passed down’.”
Everyone present, myself included, was shocked by this revelation.
“…Alicia? That’s the first I’m hearing of this, too.”
“My apologies. I missed the opportunity to mention it earlier.”
“Wait, but what does that mean? Are you suggesting that Taiku Moriya is not a demon? That this is the truth?”
“I don’t know. But the Yamato family’s ancestors were otherworlders. And our territory borders the cursed forest where Taiku Moriya resides. Perhaps they knew a truth that was erased from history.”
Alicia’s words caused the two men to fall into deep thought once more.
This time, however, their expressions were noticeably softer.
Perhaps they were slowly starting to believe.
“Additionally, this is something I heard from Leyreina-san…”
To further persuade them, I relayed the contents of a book Leyreina-san had read.
“………So such a book exists?”
“It seems it was a book privately owned. However, regarding Moriya, he was an otherworlder from the past… The hero of that time spread false information about him in order to slander him.”
“Maki-san has verified this through Appraisal. So it seems to be correct.”
“Hmm! …If it has been Appraised, then it must be true.”
Oh… Wow. Is my Appraisal really that trusted?
That being said, if this convinces them, I’m grateful.
“I want to bring Moriya to Granzawall. Therefore, I would like to request your permission.”
“Uh, hmmm…”
I didn’t expect an immediate answer, but I certainly didn’t want to give up now.
“He is safe. Well, he looks like a skeleton, but that’s a result of forbidden magic, and it’s something he had no choice but to use in order to survive! Please, allow us to help someone from our homeland!”
Whether or not my passion reaches them……… After a short pause, His Majesty finally spoke.
