Episode 173: An Unexpected Survival Life 41
I was bombarded with questions about what other magical tools I might have. But since it was already late, we quickly headed back to the inn.
His Majesty had offered us a room in the castle, but that would likely mean being stuck there until late. On top of that, I didn’t want to risk running into that obnoxious minister. So I politely declined.
Yuria looked somewhat disappointed—or rather, no, that wasn’t it. She probably just didn’t get enough fighting in.
When I glanced at the training grounds as we were leaving, nearly every knight except for the Knight Commander and Vice-Commander was sprawled on the ground.
……Yeah, that had to be Yuria’s doing.
If no one besides those two can challenge her in combat, it’s no wonder she’s wondering who to spar with next.
In Granzawall, maybe Arata could be a match? Vil-san is about as strong as the knights here, and Ryan-san might barely hold his own.
……Now that I think about it, Ryan-san is pretty strong. Being an intermediate class and able to spar with Yuria means his stats are nothing to scoff at.
“…Why is he even in Granzawall, anyway?”
“What’s wrong, Maki-san?”
“Oh, no, it’s nothing.”
Caught talking to myself, I smiled and brushed it off. It was just a random thought—I could always ask him directly later.
“Hey, Alicia-san. Are we really leaving tomorrow?”
“Yes. we need to return to advancing the development of the Forest of Demons and free Moriya-sama.”
“Hmm… Hey, Maki.”
“Yeah? What is it?”
“Do you know what kind of magic beast I’ll be getting?”
“Ah, come to think of it, I haven’t heard either.”
Still, I imagine it’ll be something fitting. I received the Ancient Crystal Dragon, which I’d always wanted, Arata got Haku to expand his combat range, and Madoka got Gregori to provide magical support as a shield.
“…Well, he’ll probably give you a familiar suited to your fighting style.”
“That’s true. If I have it, maybe I can finally beat the Knight Commander.”
“Is that all that’s on your mind?”
“Of course! No matter how much I strategize, I can’t land even a single hit! It’s so frustrating!”
“Ah, so you’re a musclehead who hates losing.”
“Who are you calling a musclehead!?”
Ouch! Don’t hit me out of nowhere!
“Th-that’s exactly why I’m calling you a musclehead!”
“Shut up, you scrawny weakling!”
“Hey, you two. People are watching, you know?”
“”……..Oh.””
I had almost forgotten we were still on our way to the inn.
Hearing quiet giggles from passersby, Yuria and I both turned red and looked down in embarrassment.
“Honestly. By the way, are you sure this is all right?”
“……What do you mean, Alicia?”
“I mean, it’s a great honor to have His Majesty’s trust. But it’s all thanks to you and the others. To be honest, I feel like I haven’t contributed anything.”
“Is that what’s bothering you?”
“Yes. And I’m serious about this.”
She was definitely troubled. But her concern seemed unnecessary to me.
“I’ve told you before—if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. That goes for Yuria and the others, too. You’ve taken care of us and helped us since we met. How can you say you’ve done nothing?”
“But all I’ve done is look after everyone. And now, you’re all capable of surviving on your own.”
“Maybe now. But the only reason we’ve reached this point is because of you. Besides, you’re a capable fighter now, too, Alicia.”
“That may be true, but…”
I get why she feels that way. We’re a divine class and a special class, while she’s still in a lower-class one. Even if she’s pulling her weight, it’s natural to feel a bit inferior.
“Did someone say something to you?”
“No, not at all.”
“Then have some confidence. Alicia, you’ve contributed just as much as we have!”
“…..…I think that’s going a bit far, don’t you?”
“…….Yeah, I’d say that’s definitely an exaggeration.”
“Hey! I was trying to be serious here!”
Yuria’s agreement earned her a firm nod from Alicia.
I couldn’t help but feel a little betrayed. But seeing Alicia’s expression soften slightly, I decided not to say anything more.
