Episode 182: An Unexpected Survival Life 49
Suppressing my desire to Appraise Ryan-san, I turned my focus to the next battle.
This time, there were four separate beasts, each with unique forms:
-
-
-
- The first, a massive bear-like beast with jet-black fur that rippled as it approached, its claws laced with deadly venom—Death Bear.
-
-
-
-
-
- The second, a humanoid beast with writhing, snake-like hair and petrifying evil eyes—Medusa.
-
-
-
-
-
- The third, a headless humanoid clad in deep crimson armor that moved on its own—Dullahan.
-
-
-
-
-
- The fourth, a skeletal undead beast draped in a black robe—Lich.
-
-
The first to charge in was the Death Bear.
It advanced on its hind legs. But as soon as its forelegs hit the ground, it surged forward at full speed.
Though it looked like a simple charge, its speed was abnormal.
At a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour, even a glancing blow from that massive body could shatter human bones—or worse, tear someone apart entirely.
“KooOOOOOOoooo!”
To make matters worse, the Lich in the rear cast necromantic magic, making the surrounding air heavier and dimming the visibility.
It seemed they intended to make dodging the Death Bear’s charge almost impossible.
However, we had a sage capable of light magic on our side.
“Madoka! Saint Field!”
“Got it!”
We countered the Lich’s Dark Field with our own area-of-effect magic.
The Saint Field, a force opposing the Lich’s Dark Field, would overwrite the spell.
While the powers usually counterbalance, creating a boundary, Madoka had eaten a banana. Against the boosted Madoka, there was no competition.
Without resistance, the Dark Field instantly vanished, and the Saint Field bathed the area in warm light.
“Haku, Sunny! Go for it!”
“Raaaaaawr!!”
“Pikyaaaaah!”
“BmooOOOOOOO!”
Haku and Sunny attacked the Death Bear not from the front but from the side, biting into its neck.
While Haku had the superior overall stats, the Death Bear outmatched Haku in raw Strength stats. Sunny, on the other hand, still wasn’t a match at all.
The Death Bear flailed its arms wildly, trying to grab them. But judging that they’d inflicted enough damage, Haku leapt back before being caught, and Sunny had already retreated to safety. It prioritized caution.
This was when Arata, having erased his presence, moved in close.
Targeting the bloodied neck, he struck with a sharp blow—but it wasn’t enough to end the fight.
“…!”
“A duel between swordsmen, is it?”
The headless knight, Dullahan, intercepted Arata’s sword to protect the Death Bear.
After a brief exchange of blows, neither found an opening. And they pulled back.
Meanwhile, the Death Bear’s bleeding neck was enveloped by a dark mist from the Lich’s necromantic magic. It stopped the hemorrhaging.
“ScreeeEEEE!”
“Sensei, lightning magic!”
“Thunderbolt!”
Ah, it seemed she had already moved on to the next action without my orders.
Who exactly is Sensei, anyway? Well, it’s making the fight easier, so I won’t complain.
A bolt of lightning descended from the sky and aimed at the Medusa, who had been preparing to activate her Evil Eyes of Petrification.
She leapt back to avoid a direct hit, but the blinding flash of the lightning made her shut her eyes. It prevented her Evil Eyes of Petrification from activating.
Since being hit by her Evil Eyes of Petrification would spell certain death, we pressed the attack with continuous magic.
“Thunder Needle!”
This spell, focused on speed, unleashed a barrage of lightning needles.
While less powerful than other spells, it was the fastest in Sensei’s arsenal and could be fired in large numbers.
The needles shot toward the Medusa’s eyes just as she opened her lids. They striked her snake-like pupils repeatedly.
“GyagyaGAGAAAAAA!”
“Madoka! Finish it!”
“Leave it to me! Shine Breaker!”
Shine Breaker—A spell that summons a destructive light. It was one of the spells Moriya had taught Madoka.
Its power depended on the amount of ambient light, naturally making it more potent during the day. Though it wasn’t unusable at night.
Currently, we were in a dense forest where sunlight barely penetrated.
Still, Madoka chose Shine Breaker for one reason—because the Saint Field was active.
Thanks to the Saint Field, the area was flooded with holy light, amplifying the Shine Breaker’s power.
The resulting explosion of light obliterated everything in its path.
“AaaAAAAAaaaaAaa—”
“KooOOOOooooO—”
………Wait a second. Did we just blast away the Lich too, along with Medusa?
Oops. Seems like light magic is their weakness.
