Episode 229: Futon Bombardment
After leaving the dining hall, Winster and his companions were slightly dazed by the delicious food and drink.
Though the effects of alcohol played a role, it was undeniable that the meals they had in the Onsen District were some of the finest they had ever tasted.
Walking behind them, Dietrich seemed to share the sentiment. He was lost in silent contemplation.
“…I could’ve eaten a bit more,”
Vigul muttered, rubbing his stomach with a dissatisfied expression. It was as if he hadn’t had enough.
This, of course, was his usual behavior.
When they reached a point where the scenery outside was visible through the window, Winster’s gaze drifted outward.
The colorful lanterns illuminated the Onsen District, filling the lively night with cheer.
Everyone walking about had smiles on their faces.
It was clear this was a peaceful, welcoming place to live.
“Hm? Isn’t that one of the knights? He dares to enjoy himself without me?”
Vigul suddenly exclaimed, spotting one of the knights out in town. They were clearly making the most of their time.
“Commander Vigul, you’re supposed to be His Majesty’s guard.”
“Come now, Chancellor. You’re here. Isn’t that enough?”
“Haha! It’s fine, Vigul. Go ahead,”
“Your Majesty!”
“Thank you! Then, I’ll take you up on that offer!”
Vigul exclaimed, bolting outside at full speed. It left a flustered Dietrich in his wake.
“……Are you sure that was okay, Your Majesty?”
“It’s fine. He deserves to enjoy this place as well. It’s not often we get such opportunities to rest.”
“If you say so, then I understand.”
“You’re free to go out as well, Dietrich. We have soldiers that Maki prepared for our protection.”
“I cannot do that. If I go, it’ll be when Commander Vigul is present.”
“Ah, but you want to go, don’t you?”
“No, I don’t!”
Ever the serious one, Dietrich couldn’t bring himself to leave Winster’s side.
However, deep down, the researcher in him was itching to investigate the town and uncover the secrets behind its construction.
Aware of this internal struggle, Winster had offered him the chance to explore. But Dietrich ultimately stayed, accompanying Winster back to their room.
As they opened the door, the scent of tatami mats greeted them. It was calming their hearts as they stepped inside.
Knowing they would be sleeping on futons that were neatly folded in the corner of the room, Dietrich began preparing them.
“….. Oh?”
“Hm? What is it?”
“It’s… much lighter and warmer than it looks.”
The pristine white futons were filled with feathers from magical beasts, making them both light and incredibly warm.
Curious, Winster lifted his own futon.
“Oh, this is delightful!”
“I see… This must be what Maki-sama meant when he said we’d understand at bedtime.”
Without wasting time, the two spread out their futons and slipped inside.
“”Ahhhhh~…””
They sighed in unison. The comfort was overwhelming them.
Though the hot spring had relaxed them earlier, they realized they were still carrying lingering fatigue. Which all melted away as soon as they lay down.
Before they knew it, sleep overtook them. And they drifted into a deep slumber.
Even the ruckus caused by Vigul when he returned after his night out failed to wake them.
They slept soundly until the next morning, completely unaware of the noise around them.
