Episode 237: Hot Springs, Hospitality, and Trouble 36
Attempting to Appraise something far away can fail even if I increase my Magic stats.
When it comes to Appraising Akagi, whose whereabouts are entirely unknown, it feels risky. However, Dietrich-sama clearly had a solid reason for proposing it to me.
“As I mentioned earlier, Maria is aware that the Adelreed Kingdom has taken over Shriden. It’s highly possible she entrusted Akagi Ena with investigating the matter.”
“…So that ties into the earlier conversation. If Akagi has infiltrated the Kingdom of Adelreed, the Appraisal’s range won’t have to be as wide. That increases the chances of success, doesn’t it?”
“Yes. Our spies are skilled, but their activities are currently confined to the former Rodgrul Kingdom. It’s likely Akagi Ena moved beyond that range. There’s also a chance she has infiltrated the newly governed Shriden Kingdom. But even there, we’ve received no information about her.”
So they had spies stationed in Shriden as well.
Well, relying on firsthand investigations rather than secondhand reports from others does lead to more credible information.
“In that case, the Adelreed Kingdom becomes the most probable location of her infiltration.”
“But… if Akagi-san isn’t in Adelreed, what will happen to Mihiro-kun?”
“I’ll probably collapse from mana depletion. But honestly, it’s a risk worth taking.”
“Mihiro-kun! Don’t say that so casually!”
Sensei protested, but I saw this as a high-stakes gamble with good odds.
As Dietrich-sama explained, if she’s not in Shriden, the next most probable place is the Adelreed Kingdom. If Maria were targeting another country, the spies would have likely caught wind of it by now.
I don’t know how skilled these spies are. But if Dietrich-sama trusts them wholeheartedly, I think it’s safe for us to trust them too.
“Come on, Sensei. If I Appraise her location and find Akagi, we might be able to save her, right?”
“Th-that’s true, but…”
“If doing nothing could save her, that would be ideal. But if not, then maybe it’s worth taking the risk and making a move.”
I tried to convince her.
Frankly, I don’t have any obligation to save Akagi. But Sensei has helped me in many ways. If she wants to save her student, I figure I can assist where possible.
Though, if it were anyone other than Akagi, I’d probably be much more motivated to help.
“…..Are you really going to be okay, Mihiro-kun?”
“I’ll be fine. Well, I’m doing it more for you than for Akagi.”
“…..I’m sorry. And thank you, Mihiro-kun.”
Sensei’s eyes filled with tears as she thanked me.
Just as I said, my motivation comes more from helping Sensei than saving Akagi.
“Alright, for now, I’ll eat a banana.”
I ate as much as I could, took a moment to catch my breath, and then activated the Appraisal for Akagi’s location.
“Appraisal: Akag Ena’s Location.”
As soon as I activated it, I felt an immense surge of mana leave my body.
My knees nearly gave out. But I steadied myself by tensing up my entire body.
Unlike when I Appraised for the skill acquisition method and passed out instantly, I managed to stay conscious. So I assumed the Appraisal was successful—or at least, I hoped it was.
It took longer than usual for the Appraisal skill to produce the results. But finally, the display screen showed the outcome.
“…To summarize the result—Akagi is in the Adelreed Kingdom.”
When I announced this, the room erupted into murmurs.
