Episode 242: Hot Springs, Hospitality, and Trouble 40
“—How about I fire off one big magic spell?”
It was Moriya who said that during breakfast.
To be fair, with Moriya around, we probably wouldn’t lose to most opponents. Actually, it was more intriguing to wonder just who *could* beat him.
“No, Moriya-san! We’ll stop Akagi-san ourselves!”
“Is that so? Well, just don’t push yourselves too hard. From what I hear, the opponent’s an advanced class—a Crusher, no less. Among advanced classes, even a small level difference can mean a lot.”
As Moriya pointed out, Akagi was level 75 in an advanced class.
While the three special-class fighters might somewhat manage to fight due to their profession, the level gap was still overwhelming. Most of Akagi’s stats surpassed theirs significantly.
For Sensei, who didn’t even have a class advantage, the level disparity alone was staggering.
Although Moriya said that magic might give Sensei an edge, since Crushers were purely melee fighters, winning would still be an extremely difficult task.
“Crushers have a skill that destroys magic too. At level 75, their mana must be considerable as well. It won’t be easy. Maki, do you have a plan?”
Suddenly, the question was directed at me. I explained that there was no way we’d let Sensei fight alone.
“I plan for all of us to handle it together. Me, Sensei, Arata, Madoka, and Yuria—the five of us.”
“And you’ll be the one giving orders, Maki?”
“Yeah, that’s probably how it’ll go.”
Unlike the other four who had combat professions, I was a divine-class support profession.
While I could manage some self-defense, I didn’t stand a chance against someone like Akagi.
Still, I didn’t want to leave everything to everyone else. I’d contribute however I could.
“I see. In that case, wouldn’t it be a good idea to prepare some defensive magic tools?”
“Defensive magic tools?”
Come to think of it, ever since I received the Blade of Severance, I’d been focusing on creating tools to improve our daily lives rather than combat tools.
……..Mostly because I’d left the fighting to others.
“In a one-versus-many fight, who do you think the lone fighter will target?”
“Who they’ll target? Probably the easiest opponent to take down?”
“That’s one answer. But they’ll also go for the leader among the group.”
“……..Wait, isn’t that *not* me?”
There was no way I was the leader. Someone like Arata or Sensei would be better suited.
“No, Maki, *you’re* the leader. You’re the one giving everyone instructions. If the leader goes down, the rest often lose their coordination and fall apart.”
“But all I’m doing is giving instructions. Everyone can act on their own, right?”
“That kind of thinking is dangerous. If everyone is following your lead and you suddenly go down, do you think they’ll be able to react immediately?”
“That’s….”
….…It’d be difficult. Something that seemed obvious and reliable disappearing all of a sudden—it’d be impossible to adapt instantly.
“Besides, you also qualify as an easy target, don’t you?”
“…..Yeah, you’re right about that.”
“If you’re both an easy target and the leader, that Akagi girl will almost certainly aim for you first.”
Hearing Moriya say that sent a chill down my spine.
Akagi charging straight at me with the intent to kill—it was terrifying just imagining it.
“Also, consider this: if she’s experienced in warfare, wouldn’t she aim for a surprise attack rather than a frontal assault?”
“Ugh… You’re right. If that happens, I wouldn’t stand a chance.”
I could use my Appraisal skill to track Akagi’s movements. But if she rushed me while I wasn’t actively using it….. I might get killed before I could do anything.
“.…Well, it’s unlikely she knows you’re a divine class. So I doubt she’ll target you first.”
“….Wait, yeah, that’s true! So why bring up the whole surprise attack thing?!”
“Preparation is key. Even if it’s unlikely, she could still decide to go for the easiest target with a surprise attack, right?”
…..…Not a single word I could say in rebuttal.
And so, I decided to use my Appraisal skill to track Akagi while also working on crafting defensive magic tools.
