Episode 243: Hot Springs, Hospitality, and Trouble 41
Creating magic tools isn’t exactly something I do alongside Moriya.
Using Appraisal, I discern the method for crafting defensive magic tools and construct them accordingly.
The magic circles differ for each magic tool. They require precise and careful drawing each time. Defensive magic tools, in particular, are the epitome of complexity.
“…….What is this? Isn’t this way too complicated?”
“Is it really?”
“Yes. Look at this…”
“…I see. That’s definitely a complicated magic circle.”
Today, I’m working with Dietrich-sama.
When I mentioned that I was making magic tools, his researcher’s spirit seemed to ignite. He insisted on observing the process.
To be frank, creating magic tools is something anyone can do as long as they know how to draw the magic circle and can reproduce it accurately.
However, there are so many rules for drawing magic circles that even a single mistake can lead to failure. In the worst-case scenario, it can cause the magic tool to malfunction and endanger the user’s life.
As a result, despite ongoing research, progress in the field has been painstakingly slow due to excessive caution.
“Magic circles incorporate numerous conditions for activation, making the process of drawing them more intricate for complex magic tools.”
“We understand that from our research. But deciphering those rules progresses at a snail’s pace.”
“Well, I’m just using my Appraisal skill to draw them exactly as instructed. If I Appraise the rules and share them, it might expedite research. What do you think?”
If it’s for the betterment of the kingdom, that might be a good approach.
However, as a researcher, is it really okay to rely on a cheat-like skill to obtain all the answers? I wasn’t sure.
I also worried that if the rules became clear, it might render researchers obsolete.
But Dietrich-sama answered immediately.
“If it doesn’t burden you, Mihiro-sama, I’d greatly appreciate it.”
“…..Are you sure? Wouldn’t that mean there’s nothing left to research?”
I asked, voicing my concerns.
Dietrich-sama, however, had already considered this point.
“True, if it’s purely about creating magic tools, there’d be less to research. But at this stage, there’s nothing we can do about that. In that case, there’s no reason to protect our pride as researchers.”
“…That’s quite a harsh perspective.”
“It’s the reality. Besides, understanding the rules won’t eliminate the field of magic tool research altogether.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. Once we grasp the rules, research can shift toward creating magic tools that enrich the nation. There’ll still be plenty of trial and error involved. And through that, the Kingdom of Adelreed will likely strengthen its position even further.”
……He’s right.
Research isn’t just about uncovering rules. It’s about using that knowledge to explore further possibilities. By resolving this longstanding issue, we could advance research to the next level.
“Understood. Once I complete the defensive magic tool, I’ll move on to Appraising those rules.”
“We are deeply grateful, Mihiro-sama!”
Dietrich-sama seemed unusually excited.
That’s likely a testament to how little progress magic tool research has made until now.
Still, just how far can the Appraiser (Divine Eye) go?
It identified solutions for taming the Forest of Demons, which had stumped people for centuries. And now it’s unraveling the mysteries of magic tools with ease.
If being granted the Appraiser (Divine Eye), a divine-class profession, carries some intent behind it, perhaps even that intent could be Appraised.
“……Or maybe not.”
“Is something the matter, Mihiro-sama?”
“No, it’s nothing.”
I decided to leave it be.
Even if I Appraised such a thing, it likely wouldn’t change anything for me.
For now, I’ll do what I can for Alicia, Glenn, and the Kingdom of Adelreed, who have helped me.
That’s enough for the time being, and I have no intention of seeking anything beyond that.
………Though I once wanted to live freely, that can wait until I’ve accomplished what needs to be done.
For now, my goals are to develop the Forest of Demons and—stop Akagi. That’s all.
