Episode 260: The Hero, the Sword Saint, and the Appraiser 1
After returning to Granzawall, we immediately began preparing for departure.
This was partly because we were unsure of the situation in the Kingdom of Rodgrul. But the biggest reason was Akagi’s words.
Maria is after the power bearing the ‘divine’ name—a power that I have already acquired. Or rather, I’ve had it from the very beginning.
Maria is unaware of this. She genuinely believes that the student council president will one day awaken to the power bearing the name of a god.
Well, there’s no guarantee that this power is exclusive to me. So it’s not entirely impossible that the student council president might awaken to it.
I casually mentioned this after we got back, but Moriya firmly denied it.
“—The power bearing the ‘divine’ name is something you’re summoned with. It’s not something you can acquire later, you know.”
He said it lightly. But if that’s true, it means there’s a real chance Maria’s patience will eventually run out.
Just to be sure, I tried using my Appraisal skill to confirm. But the power related to the ‘divine’ name seemed to require an extraordinary amount of mana. And the skill wouldn’t activate.
I could’ve eaten a banana to recover my mana. But since Moriya has lived for hundreds of years, I figured it was safe to trust his words and gave up.
Not that I was absolutely determined to confirm it—it’s not the most critical thing.
What matters most is when Maria’s patience will snap.
According to Akagi, when Maria learned that we had captured the royal family of the Shriden Kingdom—her parents—she was apparently very surprised.
This suggests that the swift capture of Gozef and Amanda was unexpected for Maria as well.
She sent Akagi to the Kingdom of Adelreed, but Akagi hasn’t returned.
That must be making her uneasy.
There’s no telling when, where, or how she’ll explode. That’s likely Maria’s current state of mind.
“If we consider how she feels, it’s probably best to head out as soon as possible.”
I packed various fruits into my Magic Bag, along with some magical tools I had crafted myself.
Speaking of these tools, I finally managed to create some for offensive use.
I had figured out how to make them quite a while ago thanks to my Appraisal skill. But I hadn’t had the time to do so until now.
This time, since Alicia handled compiling the report for His Majesty, I was able to carve out enough time to make a significant number of offensive magic tools.
“With these, I can finally use magic… Well, it’s thanks to the tools. But still, I can cast spells now.”
“What’s got you so happy, Maki-kun?”
“Whoa!?”
…H-Hey, Moriya, don’t just appear out of nowhere like that!
“Ahaha! Sorry about that!”
“You! Don’t barge into my room like that! You definitely used Teleportation Magic, didn’t you?”
“Exactly! Good guess!”
“Of course I’d guess! The door’s locked!”
Being suddenly spoken to from behind in a locked room is bad for my heart!
“Seriously. …Anyway, you came here for a reason, didn’t you?”
Moriya wouldn’t come to my room just to mess around. If he had something to discuss, I wanted to hear it sooner rather than later.
“Ah, yes, that’s right. It’s about Haruka-chan.”
“About Sensei? Did something happen?”
I was surprised he brought up Sensei since I thought Moriya was only interested in the three with special-class professions and me.
“In this battle, Haruka-chan might become a hindrance.”
…What? Sensei? That Sensei, with an advanced profession and a level of 48?
“No way, right?”
“It’s exactly that way. Sure, Haruka-chan has a high level. And in terms of magical technique, she might even surpass Madoka-chan, who has a special-class profession.”
“Then she should be fine, shouldn’t she?”
“But battles aren’t just about levels or technique, are they? You, of all people, know that very well, don’t you, Maki-kun?”
…Ah, I see. That’s what he means.
“She can’t fight seriously against her own students, can she?”
“That’s exactly it.”
“But didn’t Sensei handle suppressing our classmates during the war with the Shriden Kingdom? Shouldn’t that mean she’ll be fine?”
“I heard that back then, the level difference between them was enormous, wasn’t it? But this time, the opponents are advanced-class fighters on par with her. They also have plenty of combat experience. The level gap won’t be nearly as wide. And most importantly, they’ll be coming with the intent to kill. Even so, can you confidently say she’ll be okay, Maki-kun?”
I couldn’t immediately nod in agreement with Moriya’s words.
“…That’s why I’m coming along.”
“…Huh?”
“You and Arata-kun are both strong enough and have the resolve. Plus, you’ve got Sunny and Haku. But Haruka-chan doesn’t have any summoned beasts. So I’m saying I’ll protect her.”
I didn’t expect Moriya to bring himself into the discussion so proactively.
Just as I was beginning to think a little better of him—
“Because, during the fight with Ena-chan, I couldn’t do anything, you know? I was bored, so I want to do something this time!”
…………..Feeling even a little moved was utterly stupid of me.
“Come on, isn’t it true that you have some other motive?”
“Who knows? I’ll leave that up to your imagination, Maki-kun. See you later~.”
With that, Moriya disappeared again via teleportation.
Though I thought he was a busybody, I couldn’t deny that I accepted his decision to join us. And that too wasn’t done reluctantly, but with a sense of understanding. So, I guess it was fine.
