Episode 264: The Hero, the Sword Saint, and the Appraiser 5
“Well then, I’ll be taking my leave.”
“We were the ones who summoned you, so please don’t worry about it.”
After excusing ourselves and hearing King Orvis’ response, we left the room.
“Are you really okay with this, Mihiro?”
It was Arata who posed the question.
“Whether or not it’s possible isn’t the point—I just think it’d be wrong to dismiss it outright without even trying.”
“Well, I see what you’re saying, but…”
I could understand why Arata was uneasy. After all, the person we were dealing with had been controlling him not too long ago.
If it weren’t for the king’s request, I would’ve crushed Maria without a second thought. But considering the political entanglements between countries, the situation wasn’t so simple.
If I’d said “no,” that probably would’ve been the end of it. But I figured the information we could gain from capturing Maria would not only benefit the Kingdom of Shriden but also work to the advantage of Adelreed.
“Who knows? It might end up working out in our favor in the long run.”
“…You think so?”
“What do you think, Sensei?”
“Me? What do I think?”
Huh? Sensei had been listening to our conversation, right?
“Yes, I mean, Maria was the reason we ended up fighting each other as classmates, wasn’t she? I wanted to hear your opinion on the matter.”
Not that I didn’t already have a good idea of what her opinion would be.
“I don’t see a problem with it.”
“Ah, just as I thought.”
“You already knew what I’d say?”
“Well, I could kind of guess from your personality.”
For Sensei, the well-being of her students was her top priority. But she wasn’t the type to fuss over unnecessary negotiations with others.
Therefore, even if Maria was the cause of the fight between our classmates, I thought there would be no problem accepting it as long as it was not a request to kill her or something.
Besides, the king’s request was to ascertain Maria’s true intentions. Which was likely something Sensei was curious about anyway.
“Honestly, if you already knew, there wasn’t much point in asking, was there?”
“Well, I just wanted to make sure.”
“Hey, hey, Maki-kun, aren’t you going to ask me?”
“Do I even need to ask you, Moriya?”
“Aww, that’s so mean!”
To be fair, the incident had involved our classmates more directly than him.
“Besides, I’m against it.”
“Huh? Really?”
Surprised by his answer, I decided to hear Moriya out.
“Well, my reasoning is simple—avoid risks wherever possible. That’s it.”
“You’re saying asking Maria about her true intentions could be risky?”
“Possibly. The Magic Eye skill is pretty rare, you know? If we’re too lax around her, she might end up taking advantage of us.”
That was true—we didn’t know much about the Magic Eye. Still………..
“Appraisal: Skill – Magic Eye.”
“See? I knew you’d do that,”
Moriya said with a smirk.
…………….Was he bringing this up just to make me use my Appraisal skill?
Well, either way, learning more about the Magic Eye couldn’t hurt.
“Let’s see……… Hmm, targets the weakest points of a person’s heart for an attack. There are various types of Magic Eyes, so caution is advised. Wait, could this mean…?”
“Exactly. We’ll need to Appraise Maria’s Magic Eye specifically.”
“…You knew that from the start, didn’t you, Moriya!”
“Of course! But isn’t it better to know what Magic Eyes are capable of in general?”
Well, he wasn’t wrong. Still, it felt like a waste of an Appraisal skill.
“But it’s true, the activation conditions for Magic Eyes are consistent across types. So knowing this will definitely come in handy.”
“…You’re sure about that?”
“Come on, would I lie at this point?”
…Well, he had a point. I already trusted Moriya and owed him for lending me an invaluable familiar.
“Fine. Once we enter Rodgrul territory, I’ll Appraise Maria’s Magic Eyes in detail.”
“That sounds like the right call.”
With Moriya’s advice in mind, I resolved to move forward.
“But… are you really okay with this—Ride-san?”
I called out to Ride-san. He had been walking behind us as we left the castle.
“Of course. In this situation, it’s like we’re asking Maki-sama and the others to clean up Shriden’s mess. Someone has to accompany you to ensure appearances are maintained.”
“But we’re just acting on our own, trying to save a classmate.”
“Even so, fulfilling His Majesty’s request is still a possibility.”
“By the way, Ride-san. Aren’t you from the Kingdom of Adelreed?”
Ride-san was known as Dietrich-sama’s right-hand man. He didn’t really need to risk himself by joining us on this journey to Rodgrul.
Even so, the fact that Ride-san had agreed to accompany us—was it because of orders from King Winster or Dietrich-sama, or perhaps for some other reason?
“Indeed, I am a citizen of Adelreed. But for now, I serve as an advisor to the Kingdom of Shriden. Besides, I will eventually leave this country. This opportunity to step away, even temporarily, is quite welcome.”
“…Well, if you say so. I’ll leave it at that.”
“Thank you, Maki-sama.”
And so, with Ride-san joining our group, we departed from Shriden Castle.
