Episode 280: The Hero, the Sword Saint, and the Appraiser 21
“—I’ll take on the general.”
“—No way! Let me handle him!”
“…Hey, don’t argue while sitting on Haku!”
“…Kuuuunn.”
Ever since I said they’d fight the general and the vice-general, Arata and Gies-san have been lightly bickering over who gets to face which opponent.
Naturally, both of them want to fight the general, likely believing he’s stronger. But actually, the vice-general is the one with the higher level and greater strength. Still, I’ll keep that to myself—for now. It seems like it’ll be entertaining.
“Mihiro-kun, can I head out now?”
“Yes, please, Sensei. Sunny, don’t fly too low. If you’re too close to the ground, you’ll become an easy target for magic.”
“Pikyaa-kyah!”
“Take care of me, Sunny-chan.”
“Pikyah!”
With Sensei riding on Sunny, they took off. They kicked up a cloud of dust as they ascended into the sky.
As they climbed higher, Sensei waved lightly before heading toward the front lines.
“…She really went on board that thing, huh.”
“That’s my familiar, after all.”
“A familiar……… Could such a thing be within my grasp as well?”
“Who knows?”
“What? You don’t know?”
Well, to be fair, Moriya handled everything about the familiar contract. I never appraised the contract process because I already have Sunny and don’t need another familiar.
So, I turned to Moriya.
“…Sorry, but I can’t tell you.”
When Moriya noticed my gaze, he gave a gentle smile and shook his head.
That gesture made it clear—it wasn’t something I should disclose.
“Mm… Well, I suppose it can’t be helped.”
Surprisingly, Prince Dirk backed off without pressing further. Though I felt a twinge of suspicion that he might be plotting something, it wasn’t a concern for now.
“See? Sensei’s already gone, so you two should hurry up too.”
“…Fine. I’ll take on the vice-general.”
“Whoa! Are you serious, Arata?!”
“Yeah. You’re not going to back down, are you?”
“Of course not! Alright, I’m fired up now!”
As expected, this is how it turned out.
Arata is the type who can adapt to his opponent’s movements. Plus, his skill level is higher than Gies-san’s. If Arata takes on the vice-general, I can send him off with peace of mind.
“Alright, be careful.”
“Leave it to me.”
“Here I go!”
“Woof, woof!”
Haku dashed off at full speed. It left Prince Dirk and the rebel soldiers staring in astonishment at its sheer velocity.
“…W-what is that speed?!”
“That’s Haku for you.”
“And a flying familiar—what could one possibly do if attacked by such a thing?”
“Exactly. That’s why Sunny is so formidable.”
“………It seems today will overturn everything I thought I knew about the world.”
Watching Prince Dirk cross his arms and frown, I let out a nervous chuckle.
“But… are you sure those three and their two familiars can handle this?”
“You’re worried about them?”
“They saved my people. While I can’t fully trust them because of my position, I don’t want them to overexert themselves.”
That was an unexpected answer.
I glanced at Ride-san, who smiled and gave a small nod. It seemed he understood Prince Dirk’s personality to some extent.
“In that case, could you prepare the rebel army to move forward after the battle?”
“What? Are you asking for help?”
“Not at all. Even though they’re strong, they can’t cover a battlefield this vast. I’m asking you to be ready for the cleanup after the general and vice-general are defeated.”
“…I see. So that’s your plan. Very well, I’ll make the preparations.”
With that, Prince Dirk turned on his heel and quickly made his way back to the rebel army.
