“You’re walking too fast.”
“Really? I think I’m walking normally.”
Ahead of me, her skirt swayed as she walked. The uniform I once admired, with its checkered pattern of deep blue and light blue, caught my eye. Just looking at it made my chest tighten—especially because of the person wearing it.
I glanced at her legs, so long and pale, like a deer’s—though I’d never seen a deer in real life. Whatever they were, they were graceful.
“You’re always running, though,” I said.
“And you never exercise. You’re going to put on weight. Such a waste, with how cute your face is.”
“Wow, thanks. Shut up. I don’t care. It’s not like it matters to anyone. Besides, I’m cold. I’m heading back. Right now.”
“Suit yourself.”
She stopped walking just ahead of me, resting her hand on the guardrail as she gazed out at the early morning sea, a deep blue like twilight.
The dazzling sunrise cast light on her profile.
Amid the sound of the waves, I heard her humming a tune. It was familiar—probably that new pop song by an indie idol group that had recently gone mainstream.
Was she waiting for me? Or was she simply lost in the view of the ocean? I couldn’t tell anymore. Not long ago, we had understood each other so perfectly, without even needing words or holding hands.
But now, I was tired of chasing after her.
“I’m going home!”
I shouted it like a declaration, but my voice only scattered into the empty spring sky.
I spun on my heel, my footsteps sharp against the ground. I waited for the sound of hers following me, but all I could hear was the relentless crashing of the waves.
The harsh sea breeze whipped against my body.
The salt on my lips tasted bitter.
