I'm going to die! But in return, your life is over too. So, struggle through the pain! - Chapter 6
In the end, nothing changed for me after that day.
I was formally arrested, transferred to a detention center, and awaited trial.
I never imagined things would escalate this far.
At the trial, the sentence handed down was life imprisonment.
According to my lawyer, that was the best outcome they could manage.
My father resigned from politics, sold off the businesses he owned, and used the money to pay restitution to the railway company and Tsubasa’s mother.
My mother, hounded relentlessly by the press, spent her days bowing and apologizing until she eventually succumbed to severe depression.
When my father visited me alone during a prison visitation, he looked gaunt, a shadow of his former self. He told me that once this was all over, he and my mother planned to leave everything behind and move to the countryside to live with distant relatives.
“I’ll come visit again,” he said before leaving.
I was unlucky.
I said, “I’ll kill you,” and hit Tsubasa. That led to him falling off the platform and dying.
But luck isn’t the issue.
I need to accept it.
I killed him.
I said, “I’ll kill you,” and then he died. That’s murder.
I need to live with that.
If I become a model prisoner, maybe I’ll be released in a few decades.
By then, I’ll be an old man.
But Tsubasa… he has no such future.
Tsubasa, I was an idiot. I’m sorry I killed you.
There’s nothing I can do now except reflect on my actions and live with the consequences.
And so, my days of repentance begin.
