I'm Just Getting Your Luck - Chapter 31
Chapter 31: She’s The One I have Feelings For.
In the makeup room of “Today’s Finance”:
“Mr. Zhou, your dark circles are a bit heavy today. I’ll help cover them up,” the makeup artist said.
Zhou Chenyi had been here a few times before, rarely needing makeup. The makeup artist didn’t interact much with him, as he usually kept to himself, confident in his youth and successful career.
But today, he seemed quieter, less warm to the staff, yet still polite.
These days, it’s rare to meet a guest who’s so normal.
“Sister Wei, you’re here so early,” someone remarked.
“I recorded the show all night and stayed nearby,” Guo Baiwei smiled, sitting next to Zhou Chenyi. “Old classmates, it’s been a while.”
“Yeah, long time no see,” Zhou Chenyi replied politely, reviewing the show script.
“Since you two are classmates, I’m sure you’ll have great chemistry on the show,” Guo Baiwei said. The makeup artist approached her next, the atmosphere warming up.
“Last time I read the report, it mentioned Mr. Zhou has a crush on someone. Sister Wei, do you know who she is?” the makeup artist asked eagerly.
Guo Baiwei had read the article but couldn’t recall who the girl was.
The only girl Zhou Chenyi had talked to in high school was himself.
“I don’t know. There weren’t many girls in science class, and some are already married. I have no idea,” Guo Baiwei answered.
“Tall, elegant, strong features…” The makeup artist’s eyes lit up like she’d discovered something new. “Mr. Zhou, it sounds like you’re describing Sister Wei! No wonder you promised to come on the show.”
“Stop talking nonsense,” Guo Baiwei scolded, but didn’t stop the speculation.
The makeup artist pressed on: “Which girl in your class did you like?”
“It wasn’t anyone,” Guo Baiwei said firmly.
She immediately fell silent, and Zhou Chenyi gave her a calm glance that made the makeup artist realize it wasn’t embarrassment or anything else.
Guo Baiwei nervously tugged at her skirt. “I said no, Xiao Zhao, you got it wrong.”
“Sorry, Sister Zhou, I misunderstood,” the makeup artist apologized.
Guo Baiwei slapped her lap lightly, worried.
Zhou Chenyi then showed the next steps: “Maybe you didn’t see the picture next to the article.”
He flipped his phone to reveal a photo of the girl he liked. “She’s my crush. If people mistake my relationship with the host, it could hurt the show.”
Suddenly, someone knocked and asked Zhou Chenyi to get ready. He nodded and left.
—
At lunch, Yingyu and Traiser went for some Halal Malatang.
This was Traiser’s favorite spot, known for its secret combo of sesame oil and sauce.
They ate a lot, from the busy lunch rush until the place quieted down.
As they shared napkins, an old man sat nearby. He pulled out worn magazine pages from his pocket and glanced curiously at them before fixing his gaze on Traiser.
Zhou Chuanfu smiled and asked, “How old are you? What do you do? Busy?”
Strangers approaching with friendly small talk can be suspicious — one a scammer, the other a gangster.
Traiser had been tricked out of five dollars as a kid and wasn’t falling for anything now.
She snapped, “I’m a street sweeper.”
?
They didn’t care what a girl did for work, but street sweeper was a bit… well, she herself still cleaned at home.
Zhou Chuanfu kept chatting: “Sweeping streets, huh? Are you in love? When’s the wedding?”
“After he’s been sterilized,” Traiser said coolly.
“Wait, what?”
Zhou Chuanfu was stunned, and Yingyu asked, “But you said yesterday you and your boyfriend were hoping for a daughter?”
Traiser winked; Yingyu realized she was joking and stopped pressing.
Zhou Chuanfu was worried: “Sterilized? That’s not allowed these days! How could a man become a eunuch?”
Yingyu explained hesitantly, “Actually, it’s more common now, and my boyfriend respects his own preferences.”
Zhou Chuanfu was shocked by modern times. After lunch, Traiser added, “People nowadays are open-minded. Sometimes they like boys, sometimes girls. If your son or grandson likes both, he doesn’t need to look elsewhere, and they can be together forever.”
It made sense, but still…
“What if such a boy has a baby? How would he take care of him?”
“He’s male, how can he have children?”
“I heard of tech where men can have a uterus attached, get hormone treatments, even surgery to look more female,” Traiser said.
Zhou Chuanfu was horrified. How could Zhou Chenyi like a girl like this?
“NO!!” he shouted.
Inspired by a TV show, he slammed five million yuan on the table. “If you leave my grandson, you get this right away! I’ll buy you a house anywhere but Jincheng!”
Yingyu blinked, thinking, if she’s worth five million, then the grandson can’t be worth much.
Zhou Chuanfu snapped, “Hey, this isn’t your business, don’t raise the price!”
Yingyu replied, “No way! Five million won’t get you out!”
Traiser told Zhou Chuanfu to write the check, and he did.
Fifty thousand or five hundred thousand? No problem. But five million? That’s ridiculous.
Traiser took out her phone: “Police, there’s a scammer here with a fake check!”
…
After they left, Zhou Chuanfu called Zhou Chenyi, furious.
“What kind of girlfriend is this? You ran off with the money, and you’re never allowed to see her again!”
Between recordings, Zhou Chenyi answered, headache on his face: “You went to see her? I told you, we’re not a couple.”
“I know. Whatever you call it. Even if you’re a duck or sterilized, I won’t let you marry her!”
“You’re a good young man! She made you sterilize yourself! She thinks she’s Empress Dowager Cixi commanding eunuchs? This is modern times, no one can treat people like that!”
“What did you say?”
Zhou Chenyi was confused — his grandfather’s words were harder to understand than a riddle. He sighed, “Is grandma there? Let her answer the phone.”
“Don’t ask grandma. You’re worth five million to her, and she took the money and left you.”
“Others have money too. They just don’t like me.”
Did Yingyu really get the money? No, Zhou Chenyi made far more than that.
When he arrived, he wanted to hold hands with others, but was refused. Maybe he really wasn’t worth much.
Before Zhou Chenyi could say more, angry voices burst through the phone: “Police, that’s him! He’s a liar!”
—
Zhou Chuanfu, eighty years old, was called to the police station and arrested for the first time in his life.
Such shame!
After checking, they found the check was genuine. Zhou Chuanfu was a respected entrepreneur who genuinely wanted to pay to get Traiser away from his grandson.
How could someone with five million lie about a little thing? Traiser cleared up the misunderstanding — her boyfriend’s grandfather had died long ago, and she’d been confused with Zhou Chuanfu. Thankfully, this didn’t affect her popularity.
His wife came to pick Zhou Chuanfu up, and on the way reminded him: “Reflect on yourself. Who told you to ask without knowing? The girl thought you were bad.”
“The boy never said anything. He just had a magazine photo and saw a black-haired girl in the store. My mistake, but I’m sure my grandson isn’t a eunuch.”
Zhou Chuanfu was in better spirits.
“Chen Yi’s company talks about dating rumors. Those two girls aren’t the best company — one’s loud and always causing trouble. She was the one who called the police on me.”
“Alright, don’t be mad at the girl. Didn’t she bring you a glass of water?”
“Hot water! It burned my tongue!”
“Didn’t she also bring you chocolate?”
“I can’t eat sweets. I have diabetes.”
“Oh… then I’ll eat it.”
Zhou Chuanfu: “…”
—
“Mr. Zhou, are we going back to the company?”
It was past work hours and the driver wasn’t sure about the plan.
“No, go to the south bank. The old couple invited me for dinner.”
“Okay.”
Z: [You don’t have to wait for me to eat tonight, I have something to do.]
Effort: [I’m singing out with Sister Sese, don’t wait for me.]
Yingyu posted a photo from the karaoke — Traiser was singing “Tears Through the Barbed Window.”
What’s going on? Is work too stressful?
Zhou Buping and Zhou Chenyi arrived at the south bank of the Yangtze River — quieter than their neighborhood, with old-time charm.
“Grandma, I had Uncle Cai plant the magnolia you wanted in the garden.”
Wu Wanai liked gardening and tried to grow coconut trees despite the climate — she gave up after a year.
At dinner, typical topics came up. Grandpa Zhou teased Zhou Chenyi: “When will you bring someone home? The doctor says I won’t last long without grandkids. If you don’t bring her back soon, she’ll only see me at my grave.”
“Stop making stuff up,” Zhou Chenyi ignored him. “You secretly went to find someone, didn’t you? I’m not in a relationship.”
“Your grandpa is worried. Everyone’s talking behind your back.”
Wu Wan patted Grandpa’s head, fed the dog some ribs, then asked Zhou Buping about “Fanfan.”
“She’s doing well. Been playing with cats.”
Zhou Buping quickly changed the subject: “Brother, if you had a kid, what would you name them?”
Zhou Chenyi saw the trap but started thinking.
Grandpa said, “According to our family tree, it should be Zhou Wanguan.”
Zhou Chenyi disagreed. “Too old-fashioned. The kid should have the mother’s last name.”
Grandma and Zhou Buping exchanged looks.
“Her surname isn’t local anymore. What do you think the mother’s surname is?”
“Welcomes —”
Dang, he got caught.
“Ohh~~”
The kettle boiled.
Everyone, including the dog, looked at him teasingly. His ears flushed red.
“Then what about two kids? One with your name, one with hers?”
Whether she has kids depends on her.
He couldn’t say that. The others were clueless but tried to interpret for him.
Zhou Chenyi stopped talking. Only Zhou Buping knew the full story.
Let’s just say an ordinary employee has nowhere to live. Living at the boss’s place? It’s basically rent-free, three meals included, with the boss personally driving to and from work, taking care of them when drunk, and telling them everything’s fine. Who would believe it?
Zhou Buping teased, “Who said you won’t fall in love or like anyone? I was already thinking of baby names before I fell in love.”
“Sis, mercy!” Zhou Chenyi pleaded, hoping to block the adults’ probing.
Zhou Buping shrugged and let it go.
Grandpa Zhou returned to the topic: “That surname’s good! Much better than the blonde girl I met today!”
Zhou Chenyi was lost. Listening confused, he thought those two girls behaved just right. Who suddenly puts a five-million-yuan check on your table without panicking?
He reminded Grandpa to mark next time’s checks as gifts to avoid police trouble.
Zhou Chuanfu hit him with a cane, annoyed.
