I'm Just Getting Your Luck - Chapter 6
Look At The Face
The address Zhu Yinghan gave her was a styling studio inside a commercial building.
Given the area and Tony’s enthusiasm, if it weren’t for Zhu Yinghan, Yingyu would never have spent money here in her life.
The Bureau of Supernatural Affairs had been financially tight lately. Yingyu only had two months’ salary left in her account. Million had just started working less than a week ago. Plus, with all the trouble she caused, not losing money would already be a miracle.
Zhu Yinghan hadn’t arrived yet. Yingyu was warmly led inside and sat down on the soft leather sofa, glancing at the price list with a grimace.
Is it really this expensive to dye hair for humans? This price was way different from what Long Qiuyue had told her!
Better to dye it myself at home.
Yingyu made a snap decision—she was going to embrace online shopping!
“I have something to do, I’ll come back another day.”
The sofa was burning hot, and Yingyu dashed out the door, only to be dragged back in by Zhu Yinghan.
He seemed quite familiar with the staff, carefully arranging everything. He picked up a strand of Yingyu’s hair that had fallen onto her shoulder and looked it over.
“Your hair is a bit dry and frizzy. Let’s do a treatment. It’s too long, it’s dragging down your height. Cut it to shoulder length. Who cut your hair before? It’s uneven, looks like a dog chewed it.”
As he said this, he couldn’t help but mock Yingyu’s previous hairdresser, “The haircutting skills are poor, but the dyeing was pretty good — it matches the original color of your hair.”
Indeed, it was naturally that color.
Yingyu scratched her ear, then was caught by Zhu Yinghan’s hand.
Being held by him felt nothing special; Zhu Yinghan’s grip was more like grabbing a pig’s trotter.
The trim was neat, but Zhu Yinghan wasn’t satisfied.
He was a man who cared about details down to each strand of hair, and the people around him had to be the same.
“You’re not as refined as my sister yet. After this, have them do your nails too.”
“No problem, Han-ge. Leave it to me,” Tony said as he inspected Yingyu’s hair color in the mirror, reluctantly holding the dye. “Beautiful, are you sure you want to dye it black? It takes a long time to dye it back. It actually looks pretty good like this.”
“Dye it.” Yingyu was firm. She didn’t want to be stared at by colleagues anymore.
Lately, more and more people found excuses to come see her—it was like visiting a zoo.
Zhu Yinghan raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised. He smiled like a caring big brother: “How’s it going with Zhou Chenyi recently? Getting closer to your goal?”
The progress so far was zero.
Yingyu: “He doesn’t want to date humans.”
“Then I have hope!”
“Because I’m not human!”
Zhu Yinghan: “…?”
He began to suspect maybe he shouldn’t have sent Yingyu to seduce Zhou Chenyi.
He wanted news—but sending someone with questionable intelligence meant he might bear legal responsibility!
No wonder when Yingyu submitted her resume, she listed her alma mater as: Jincheng University of Monsters
Work experience: Manager of Lost and Found at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs
Neither that school nor the Bureau actually existed!
Zhu Yinghan choked on his water, then seriously patted Yingyu’s shoulder.
“Sis, listen to me. It’s the new era; you don’t need to say things like that for a man. You like whoever you want. Don’t hang yourself on one tree.”
He couldn’t stay long. Yesterday one of his artists was exposed for privately contacting fans, crying and accusing him of sleeping with them. Zhu Yinghan was busy dealing with managers and legal departments. Being here now was just to learn from Lu Xun’s spirit.
Time was like water squeezed out of a sponge—he already felt like a soggy old sponge.
Seeing he couldn’t convince Yingyu, Zhu Yinghan left in a hurry. Yingyu waved him off while sipping the milk tea Tony gave her.
Dyeing hair was a huge process. Yingyu dozed off in the chair, waking to Tony bringing her tiramisu.
With a big machine over her head, she hesitated to pick up the fork.
Tony laughed at her hesitation, then fed her a bite.
“When Han-ge left, he told us to take good care of you. This is nothing,” he whispered in her ear, “Han-ge’s paying, you don’t have to worry. I don’t usually eat this stuff either, but when someone’s paying, why not?”
One shouldn’t refuse help or kindness.
Yingyu silently did the math, took the fork from him, and said, “Thank you.”
—
“Hey, you promised to let me meet the doll. Where did you hide her?”
Zhou Buping traveled all the way back to Jincheng, searched Yingyu’s company for her but couldn’t find her, and stormed into Zhou Chenyi’s office demanding answers.
Zhou Chenyi was busy reviewing an abnormal data report, absentmindedly ruffling Zhou Fan’s curly hair, and said casually, “I didn’t hide her. She’s off today.”
“You’re so focused on her, but out of all the employees, you only know she’s off?”
Just after lunch, Zhou Chenyi’s brain was still sluggish. He took a sip of coffee and replied, “Xini told me she saw Yingyu go to the mall.”
Zhou Buping pressed on: “Why would he report that to you?”
“Same as I report to you.”
“?”
“Bored.”
Zhou Buping: “…”
Her brother had grown up. She couldn’t beat him by force; she needed to be clever.
“Even if she’s not your girlfriend, the doll was at least knocked out by my son. I need to meet her in person and apologize properly. Your brother-in-law said so too, so I came to compensate.”
“I already compensated. Just transfer the money to my account,” Zhou Chenyi said, busy managing the app development and ignoring his sister.
Eventually, under Zhou Buping’s coercion, Yingyu, with freshly dyed hair, received a call from Zhou Chenyi.
“Where are you?”
“Dawan City. Why?”
Zhou Chenyi looked at Zhou Buping and said sarcastically, “Wait for me. My sister told me to take you to the hospital for a checkup.”
Yingyu: “?”
Is that an insult?
She waited at the mall entrance a moment before a big G-class SUV pulled up.
The car was flashy and wild, quite unlike Zhou Chenyi’s usual stern demeanor.
When Yingyu got in, she realized Zhou Chenyi really was taking her for a hospital recheck.
“No need, right…”
At the red light, Zhou Chenyi braked and pointed at the small head popping out from the back seat. Zhou Fan wore a red armband for the supervisors, staring at her warily.
“You can’t not go. There’s a supervisor in the car. If you don’t, my sister will eat me.”
Zhou Fan pouted: “Mom is afraid you’ll be eaten by monsters, so she sent me to protect you!”
Yingyu and Zhou Chenyi laughed together.
The warm red sunset shone through the clouds on her side profile, with clear fuzz on her face. On the side of her nose was a faint, shallow red mole.
Yingyu smiled softly, sharing the cake she bought at the mall with Zhou Fan.
Kids have no resistance to sweets and immediately called her “monster sister.”
“Do you want some too?” Yingyu noticed his gaze.
“I don’t like sweet stuff.” Zhou Chenyi finally started the car after the green light. He turned the wheel and casually asked, “Why did you suddenly want to dye your hair?”
Her black hair twirled smoothly around his finger.
“Gold was too flashy, black is low-key.” Yingyu lowered her eyes. “Black hair still feels a little strange. I can’t believe it when I look in the mirror.”
“Not strange.”
The shoulder-length black hair revealed a pretty side face—no one would say it looked bad.
“Do you want to touch it?”
Yingyu looked at him expectantly.
She’d applied a bunch of bottles and jars of hair products, and before leaving, she put on some hair oil that smelled like gardenia.
Zhou Chenyi’s ears flushed red as he quickly said, “There’s a kid in the back, don’t say nonsense.”
Zhou Fan, often touched on the head by Zhou Chenyi, puffed up his cream-covered mouth and mumbled, “I’m not a kid, I’ve grown up!”
Zhou Chenyi had made a doctor’s appointment in advance. The private hospital’s scans were quick. The doctor rattled off a bunch of medical terms she didn’t quite understand.
In short, no big problems. Just needs time and care.
Near the end, Yingyu caught sight of his work ID.
Jiang Jiuyi.
Yingyu was surprised: “You’re Jiang Jiuyi?”
Long Qiuyue often mentioned him. She hadn’t expected the real person to look like this.
He wore gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose and looked gentle. When he spoke, the corners of his mouth always curled in a smile, but it seemed forced—Long Qiuyue said he rarely smiled at home. Probably because of his job. His fingers were long and slender, and he smelled strongly of disinfectant. He felt like a cold machine.
Jiang Jiuyi’s mouse paused. It was the first time he showed an expression different from his smile.
“Do you know me?”
Zhou Chenyi raised his voice: “You know him?”
“Kind of. I’m good friends with your master Cat. A few days ago, she was commenting on your abs. She likes to lie on top of you to sleep.”
Zhou Chenyi and Jiang Jiuyi were childhood friends with highly overlapping social circles. Jiang Jiuyi barely knew Yingyu a few days ago—how did he know her?
He glanced coldly at Jiang Jiuyi, who shrugged innocently, claiming he knew nothing.
When leaving, Yingyu asked, “Dr. Jiang, can I come to your house to see the cat tomorrow?”
She heard that last time Jiang Jiuyi came home he couldn’t find Long Qiuyue, so he upgraded the door lock, and Long Qiuyue complained non-stop to Yingyu about being stuck at home, feeling like she’d go moldy.
If you don’t eat the little cake tomorrow, it’ll also go moldy!
Cat owners often have cat hair on them; it wasn’t uncommon for girls to use this as an excuse to get close to him.
Jiang Jiuyi raised his eyebrow at Zhou Chenyi.
What’s going on? How do I answer this?
Zhou Chenyi crossed his arms: “Answer however you want, none of my business.”
Jiang Jiuyi kindly said, “Sorry, Miss Ying, my cat is shy. If she scratches you accidentally, it won’t be good.”
“No worries, I’m her sister!”
Yingyu was thinking of excuses when Jiang Jiuyi changed tone:
“But next time you can come with President Zhou to my place. Grape likes looking at handsome guys and beautiful girls.”
“That’s great! Thank you, Dr. Jiang!” Yingyu followed human social etiquette 101—added him on WeChat.
Just as she said this, Zhou Chenyi refused.
Jiang Jiuyi: “?”
Yingyu: “?” Why does adding Dr. Jiang’s WeChat have anything to do with you?
“Doctors can’t randomly add patients on WeChat. It’s the rule.” Zhou Chenyi pulled on Yingyu’s scarf as they walked out.
Zhou Fan, who learned some manners somewhere, bowed ninety degrees to Jiang Jiuyi and happily followed them.
The WeChat name “NoSeeDoc” sent him a message: 【?】
Z: 【She’s not very smart. I’m afraid she’ll be fooled by your dark heart behind that handsome face.】
NoSeeDoc: 【You have no legal relationship, you mind too much.】
Z: 【I’m her boss.】
NoSeeDoc: 【Zhou Boss, be kind to your subordinate. I might come work at your company too.】
Z: 【Sure. We need a beggar at the company entrance.】
NoSeeDoc: 【……】
“Is this Dr. Jiang?” Yingyu leaned from the front passenger seat, curious to see his phone screen.
NoSeeDoc’s profile picture was a close-up of a black cat—Cat Sister’s face.
Yingyu smiled: “Why’s his WeChat called NoSeeDoc?”
“He got tired of people randomly adding him and asking questions after becoming a doctor,” Zhou Chenyi explained as he pushed Yingyu back to her seat.
Zhou Fan, asleep in the back, stirred as Zhou Chenyi lowered his voice:
“Don’t think he’s a good person. He’s not as generous as me.”
“He should be pretty good,” Yingyu guessed. Though Cat Sister always complained about his long hours, she clearly liked him.
“How do you figure that out?”
Yingyu made something up: “By reading faces.”
Zhou Chenyi: “…Your method is truly scientific.”
The Guide to Taming and Raising said that a mature cat doesn’t wait to be petted but takes the initiative to pet humans.
Applying this, Yingyu eagerly offered, “Let me read your face too! I learned from a master!”
Zhou Chenyi just turned his head when Yingyu’s finger, in the faint streetlight, gently touched his chin.
Her fingertip was a little cool. Zhou Chenyi didn’t move.
Chin, nose bridge, brow bones—all perfectly just right. Yingyu’s careful fingertip moved along his face, accidentally meeting his lowered gaze.
“Yingyu,” Zhou Chenyi suddenly called.
Her voice was barely audible, “Yes?”
“Know your limits when taking advantage, okay?”
Yingyu’s cheeks flushed bright red.
