- Chapter 36: Shinji Matou Never Disappoints
Shinji, Cloris, and Rin stood face to face at the entrance of the theater.
For a moment, the three of them fell into a strange silence.
In the end, it was Cloris who broke the silence first.
“Oh dear, Shinji,” Cloris said, grabbing his shoulder and squinting her eyes. “Who is this woman with you?”
Shinji’s face turned pale in an instant. “C-Cloris!?”
‘What’s with that chilling smile? Isn’t your Flora family’s magecraft related to botany? When did you learn ice magecraft?’
Next to him, Rin seemed to have guessed something when she heard this silver-haired beauty addressing Shinji by his “name.”
“This lady is one of the women you associate with outside, right?” Rin tossed her ponytail to one side and smiled graciously. “Could you introduce me?”
“One of the women?”
Cloris’s face had already turned as cold as the eternal ice of Antarctica.
“Shinji, I don’t remember educating you to become this kind of man~”
Shinji’s brain was now running at a speed of 150 miles per hour.
On the surface, Shinji appeared calm, as if nothing had happened. But inside, he felt like his heart was beating so fast that it couldn’t supply enough blood.
“Cloris, this is the person I’ve been telling you about, Rin. She happened to have a role in a movie this time, so I brought her to Cannes.”
Shinji used an explanation that even Cu Chulainn, the battle loving hound, could understand, to introduce Rin to Cloris.
“Hmph~”
Cloris lightly snorted, and she didn’t let go of her intentions toward Shinji.
“And then? What did she mean by ‘one of the women’?”
“Well, this…” After thinking for a moment, Shinji forcefully explained, “Because Rin isn’t very used to English yet, so her choice of words might be a bit off…”
Before Shinji could finish making excuses for himself, Rin rudely interrupted him.
“Hey, Shinji. Are my words really that strange? That’s not what you said at the Clock Tower…”
How could Rin miss such a good opportunity to tease Shinji?
She didn’t bother covering for Shinji. At the very least, exposing Shinji’s true self could help this lady in front of her escape from her misery.
So Rin boldly pushed Shinji aside and took the initiative to communicate with Cloris.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Rin.”
As she said that, Rin even reached out her hand to the other person.
“You’re really beautiful, Miss. Although I know Shinji often hangs out with pretty girls, I didn’t expect him to hook up with someone of your caliber. It really surprised me.”
After Rin finished introducing herself, Cloris’s eyes actually sparkled, and she warmly shook the hand Rin had extended.
“Oh, you’re Rin? Shinji often talks about you. The genius magus of the Tohsaka family, a talented young girl with all five attributes.”
“That bastard-I mean, does Shinji often mention me?”
Rin felt a hint of surprise.
“Yes!”
Cloris nodded vigorously. “You’ve been together since childhood, old enemies who can’t escape their fates, like fox and dog friends!”
“Old enemies… fox and dog friends… Shinji, you need to give me an explanation!”
Rin’s body erupted with terrifying magecraftal power, and her black hair behind her floated in the air like a female ghost under the influence of magecraft.
“Cough cough! Cloris, what are you talking about!”
‘Damn, isn’t that just nonsense I spouted when I was drunk? Why do you remember it so clearly!!’
At that moment, Shinji realized he was in mortal danger.
When you choose to associate with the wrong crowd, you’ll eventually pay the price.
Shinji deeply understood this lesson.
“Alright, Cloris.”
Feeling that if these two continued to interact, he might not see the sun tomorrow, Shinji decisively pulled Cloris aside.
“You have the distributor’s tickets, right? Let’s hurry inside.” Shinji pushed her and said, “I’ll take you in.”
Seeing that his life was being threatened, Shinji didn’t care about his attitude towards Cloris anymore. He just wanted to separate these two young ladies as quickly as possible.
Snap
Rin grabbed Shinji.
“Shinji, I’m a bit interested in Western magecraft… Let me take this lady inside to find her seat~”
As Rin said this, she firmly gripped Shinji’s shoulder.
“She’s quite noble, isn’t she? We should entertain her properly, don’t you think?”
“I think that’s a good idea. I also want to learn more about the Japanese magical community.” Cloris clapped her hands and looked at Shinji. “What do you think?”
‘Can I dare to say no?’
At this moment, Shinji was at a loss for words, and his strong-willed attitude didn’t leave any room for him to speak.
So, Cloris and Rin, the two beautiful women, walked hand in hand into the cinema, leaving only Shinji alone in disarray at the door.
“That Miss Tohsaka from the Tohsaka family looks quite interesting. Having such a childhood friend is your lucky charm.”
Waver, who had watched the entire show from start to finish, teased Shinji with a hint of delight.
Shinji just smiled without saying anything about Waver’s schadenfreude.
‘Wait until Rin studies at the Clock Tower in two years. I believe you’ll like this interesting Miss Tohsaka! You gloomy man with weak kidneys and a stomachache!’
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆
As the representative of the Time Group, Cloris was given a very good seat, the comfortable “Emperor’s Throne” in the middle and towards the back.
Cloris guessed that this great seat was arranged by Waver Velvet, as that scoundrel Shinji wouldn’t pay so much attention to her.
In fact, the Time Group had two seats, one for Cloris and one for her assistant. Due to Rin’s arrival, the somewhat inconvenient assistant was directly sent away by Cloris, and her seat was given to Rin.
So when Shinji walked into the cinema, he immediately saw the two people chatting happily.
Seeing the two of them chatting so intimately like best friends, Shinji really wanted to go over and listen to what they were saying.
But the movie was about to start, and Shinji could only sit down with Waver in their seats.
‘I hope these two ladies don’t reveal my secrets.’
With this anxious thought, Shinji didn’t find the high-quality soft chairs in this theater very comfortable. Instead, it felt like sitting on pins and needles.
In reality, Cloris and Rin were no longer focused on him at this point in their conversation.
Certainly, this doesn’t mean that the two beauties haven’t discussed matter regarding Shinji.
Rin would never pass up an opportunity to make Shinji feel inferior.
However, Shinji has too many flaws concentrated in one place, and once Rin finished talking about his achievements at the Clock Tower, there wasn’t much else to discuss.
As a result, their conversation quickly shifted to movies. Cloris genuinely wants to represent this film and learn more about it.
But this has nothing to do with her relationship with Shinji. It’s more about Cloris recognizing Shinji’s talent from a professional perspective and wanting to represent the film for financial gain.
The Time Group, where she works, is currently at a bottleneck in its development, and expanding into the film market is the company’s future direction.
That being said, the Time Group is not a charity organization. To convince the company to distribute Shinji’s film, Cloris needs sufficient data to support her case.
As for Shen’s situation, it can be confirmed with the Clock Tower at the right time.
If it’s false, Cloris feels it’s necessary to clear Shinji’s name to ensure her partner’s reputation.
If it’s true, well… hm.
Rin also guessed Cloris’s thoughts, but she didn’t care. After all, she always used phrases like “I heard…” when talking, so it wouldn’t affect her.
However, they hadn’t been chatting for long when the big screen lit up, and the ceiling lights went out simultaneously. The movie theater, which had been full of conversation, suddenly fell silent.
Rin and Cloris, who had been chatting, also stopped talking and waited for the movie to start.
“It’s about to begin.”
Cloris felt a little excited inside. She had been hearing Shinji’s talk on paper for a while, and now she could finally see the real thing.
“Yes,” Rin nodded slightly, sitting quietly in her seat. Even though she had seen it more than once, the heir of the Tohsaka family wouldn’t do something as embarrassing as disturbing others while watching a movie.
Soon, Fate/stay night began.
Unlike those drawn-out traditional movies, the film doesn’t slowly unfold the story to create mystique. Instead, it rapidly introduces the world view and dives directly into the main theme. The intense battle between Lancer and Archer immerses the audience into the fierce Holy Grail War.
Cloris may not have the expertise in films that the professionals do, but she’s not completely clueless either.
The extremely fast pacing of Fate/stay night’s story sets it apart from most movies out there, and Cloris found it challenging to adapt to at first.
With some concerns about whether Fate/Stay Night followed the storytelling pace of mature commercial films, Cloris wasn’t sure if a movie like this would be well-received by the general public.
However, before even 30 minutes had passed, Cloris put her worries aside. The audience playing the role of the atmosphere in the theater demonstrated to all the distributors present the excellence of this film.
Unlike the reserved Japanese audience, who might express their thoughts with just a few words, Western viewers tend to be more expressive in their attitudes during the movie.
The repeated cheers in the theater were the most direct praise for Fate/Stay Night from these viewers.
The whole Fate/Stay Night movie, like its fast-paced beginning, wasn’t overly complicated or mystical in its storytelling. The plot was straightforward, but the action sequences were fierce, direct, thrilling, and visually stunning.
The continuous explosions, flashes, and screen light pollution sent the adrenaline of the audience skyrocketing, forcing them to applaud loudly to calm their emotions.
Especially in the latter part of the film when Gilgamesh appeared, his magnificent “Gate of Babylon” left everyone amazed!
How on earth did they come up with such a chaotic and dazzling attack style?!
Though Cloris restrained herself from shouting like the regular audience members to maintain her composure, her gaze frequently turned to the front row, trying to locate the position of the young man. She really wanted to ask him how he managed to make a movie so exciting without the use of naked women.
Creating a movie that can bring such excitement with just the use of magecraft to produce magnificent special effects is quite a feat.
Cloris even suspected that Shinji had hidden some kind of suggestive magecraft in the movie’s scenes, manipulating people’s emotions while they watched.
After all, Shinji himself was a skilled practitioner of suggestion magecraft.
“You really are a genius, Shinji.”
As the film concluded, Cloris was the first to stand up and applaud. Encouraged by her, more applause echoed around, and soon the entire theater was enveloped in applause.
“Excellent, Shinji. I’m securing this movie.”
Cloris, clapping enthusiastically, reaffirmed her initial thoughts.
