- Chapter 5: Tohsaka Rin, the Machine Idiot
Wearing a red top with a winter beige coat over it, her slender waist evoked a sense of tenderness. A black skirt revealed tightly wrapped black stockings and smooth, shapely legs.
Anyone would rate this twin-tailed girl above 90, with the only drawback being her flat chest.
Undoubtedly, she was Tohsaka Rin, one of the three main heroines of Fate and the main heroine of the Fate UBW Route.
“Heh heh~ Shinji.” Rin crossed her arms and smirked coldly at Shinji. “Even Emiya-kun knows about your perverted adventure at the Clock Tower. Yet you still have no shame.”
Shinji, under questioning, curled his lips, and a glint of cunning flashed in his eyes, as if he remembered something interesting.
“Oh, isn’t this the famed machine idiot? the one who can make machines explode with a touch, the self-propelled machine nemesis, the forever-poor heiress, the model of what not to do, Rin-chan~ Remember to stay away from the equipment later, or you’ll add unnecessary expenses to the production team.”
“…”
The long string of adjectives left the people around them at a loss, and their gazes towards Rin became strange.
A blush appeared on Rin’s face. She had only intended to mock Shinji using Kiritsugu’s words, but she didn’t expect him to counterattack so directly.
“It’s not like I want the machines to explode or anything!!”
The beaten-down twin-tailed girl let out a miserable cry.
“Ohoho! Onii-chan, is this Japan’s form of comedy duet?”
Seeing Shinji and Rin’s banter, the silver-haired loli beside them couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
Shirou, somewhat troubled, covered his forehead. While Shinji’s unseriousness was well-known to him, it was quite something for the diligent Rin to fall into his rhythm.
“Illya, good children shouldn’t learn such boring things.”
“Huh?”
Illya bit her finger, disappointment showing on her face.
“Be good and go find Mom and Dad with your onii-chan. We haven’t seen them in days, and they probably have a lot to tell us.”
Shirou coaxed and tricked his younger sister away from this tumultuous place.
“Cough, cough!”
Rin regained her composure, glaring fiercely at Shinji.
“Oh dear, big sister Rin, you don’t have to look at me like that. I can get shy, you know.”
Shinji himself continued to sport his usual playful smile.
“Drop that hypocritical smile!” Rin said angrily, looking at Shinji, “Looking at you just irritates me.”
Shinji sighed dramatically, “Rin, it’s really heartbreaking to hear you say that. After all, we grew up together as childhood friends.”
“Even though I went abroad for these years, our past friendship still exists. Look, Shirou and I get along very well, right?”
Rin’s voice brimmed with frustration, “Please don’t try to add unnecessary memories! Where did our friendship come from? In my memories, I only remember you bullying me.”
“Really?”
“Should I list them in chronological order or by severity?”
Shinji shrugged, surprised that this girl still held grudges.
Perhaps due to the absence of the Holy Grail War, the relationships among the Three Families were much closer in this world. Shinji, Shirou, Rin, and Sakura had grown up together.
However, the interaction among the four mostly consisted of Shinji and Rin arguing, Shirou mediating, and Sakura quietly following behind.
“It’s just kids’ bickering, Rin. Do you really want to remember it until you’re in your coffin?” Shinji couldn’t help but sarcastically comment.
“…”
Rin’s eyebrows twitched, a sign of her impending outburst.
“Alright, let’s leave the past behind.” Shinji quickly changed the subject, not wanting to provoke Rin’s anger further. “Let’s get along well from now on.”
Shinji’s goodwill only made Rin more cautious. She asked guardedly, “What mischievous scheme are you planning now?”
“You make it sound like I’m always up to no good.” Shinji waved his hand dismissively. “Look, I’ve invited you to play the second female lead in my first film. Isn’t that a sincere gesture?”
Rin rolled her eyes, clearly displeased. Her face slightly red, she retorted, “Hmph, if my father didn’t insist, I wouldn’t have come. I really didn’t want to get involved in this troublesome affair.”
“If you really don’t want to come, then don’t accept any remuneration.”
Shinji shrugged, having experienced Rin’s tsundere behavior since childhood.
“If it’s about your studies, Rin, don’t worry. I’ve hired dedicated tutors for you students. By tomorrow…”
“What!! Tutors?!”
Illya, who had been eavesdropping nearby, exclaimed.
“Yes, that’s right.” Shinji nodded. “Both high school and elementary school teachers.”
During the filming at the Einzbern Castle, they were far away in the deep mountains of Fuyuki City. Going up and down the mountain by car took a long time, so they had to request leave from school.
To avoid letting the students’ education suffer due to the filming, Shinji had no choice but to hire private tutors for them. After all, he was running a legitimate film production, and it was his responsibility to ensure that the underage cast members were keeping up with their studies.
However, Illya clearly didn’t understand Shinji’s good intentions. Her small face was filled with unhappiness.
Thinking she could have fun without going to school while filming in the mountains, Illya now felt like the sky was falling.
“Can we not have tutors?”
Illya, at the tender age of ten, was in the prime of her playfulness and believed that studying was absolutely evil and villainous!
“Sorry, Illya.”
Rin sweetly smiled and gently patted the little girl’s head. When it came to matters unrelated to Shinji, Rin had quite a bit of patience.
“You’re still young now, so you must focus on your studies. Otherwise, you might end up like a certain unreliable big brother of ours, who’s still a junior high school dropout.”
Rin’s gaze shifted toward Shinji as she said, “You know who I mean.”
Shinji didn’t seem bothered by this. He wiggled his finger and proudly declared, “Rin, don’t forget, I hold a doctorate from the University of Oxford~”
“Oh, Shinji onii-chan is amazing.”
Illya’s eyes sparkled as she admired Shinji.
Rin’s lips twitched, “What’s the point of showing off that fake degree?”
Rin was well aware of how Shinji obtained his doctorate degree. The Clock Tower would grant their graduates a degree from the University of Oxford in linguistics, to facilitate their lives in the mundane world.
To be fair, Clock Tower magus were fully qualified to earn a linguistics doctorate because many magecraft studies involved various obscure languages like Ancient Greek, Old English, and Sanskrit.
However, there were exceptions to everything, and Shinji was a typical case of being strong in practical application but weak in theory. Although he excelled in applying magecraft, his theoretical understanding lagged behind.
This was understandable, considering Shinji’s limited time studying at the Clock Tower. His prodigious magecraft talent allowed him to graduate, but his theoretical knowledge fell short.
That’s why Rin couldn’t help but mock Shinji’s lackluster diploma.
“Don’t worry, I’m also extremely fluent in Japanese,” Shinji retorted with a cold huff.
“We all know Japanese, what’s there to boast about?”
Rin rubbed her temples. She didn’t want to waste more time with Shinji; it was too aggravating.
“Anyway, I’ll go put my luggage in my room and then review the script. Since I’ve promised Father, I should at least play my role well.”
Rin flipped her hair and headed towards the castle.
“Oh, by the way, Rin.”
Hearing Shinji call her, Rin paused and looked back at him.
“If you could, I hope you’ll smile more.” Shinji offered his advice.
“Why?” Rin huffed in her tsundere manner. “Do you want me to show you a nice face?”
“Of course not. There’s an old saying in my homeland, ‘Extreme happiness raises the cup.’ Smiling is good for your figure.”
Shinji finished with a cheeky wink.
Rin was momentarily stunned, then a blush spread from her cheeks to her snowy white neck.
“Shinji Matou, go to hell!”
If the gems weren’t so expensive, Rin would have used them to bombard Shinji.
Meanwhile, Shinji himself had already entered the castle, leaving Rin behind. Once inside, he didn’t head to his room for rest. Instead, he directed the Heroic Spirits and other crew members to set up the castle’s scenes.
Although the current layout of the Einzbern Castle was almost perfect compared to Shinji’s initial vision, there were still some areas that needed adjustments.
For example, to match the lighting during filming, the colors of room wallpapers, carpets, and other furnishings needed to be altered. Otherwise, the saturation of the scenes might be off, failing to highlight the characters properly.
Fortunately, the castle’s owner, Irisviel, was highly cooperative with the filming process. She willingly accepted Shinji’s requests for modifications. In fact, she even said that if Shinji needed it, the entire castle could be torn down.
Irisviel’s enthusiasm stemmed not from the contract between the Matou family and the Einzberns, but simply from her genuine interest in filmmaking.
In Shirou’s private opinion, his stepmother had a bit of a reckless streak and was always easy going about things that piqued her interest.
Seeing Irisviel’s cooperation, Shinji, who usually liked taking advantage of situations, felt a bit embarrassed. To repay her support for his film, he made a few adjustments to the script, adding a few extra scenes in the castle where Illya’s maid character interacted with Irisviel as a cameo. This way, Irisviel could have some fun too.
However, truth be told, Irisviel’s acting wasn’t that great.
After all, she was a bit too lively and didn’t really match the role of Illya’s maid.
“Her smile actually makes her seem more like Illya’s older sister.”
Shinji commented while watching the monitor.
“Yep, you’re right, kid. Iri really is the best.” Kiritsugu, who was standing nearby, nodded approvingly.
Shinji sighed internally.
Kiritsugu, you really dote on them too much.
