I Am the White Moonlight that the Former Movie Queen Secretly Loves - Chapter 19
That evening, Qin Xiaofang coaxed and pressured Qi Sijia into playing games together. But as soon as they logged in, they discovered that Meng Jiang, who hadn’t appeared since the last time, was online.
“Good evening.”
She seemed to be in a good mood and greeted Qi Sijia first.
In contrast, Qi Sijia didn’t smile at all and responded with a rather impolite “Hmm.”
They jumped straight into the game. Without Qi Sijia taking the lead, the team—comprising two noobs and a reckless newbie—had zero firepower.
After Qi Sijia got eliminated twice in the poison zone while spacing out, Qin Xiaofang finally couldn’t hold back. “Damn, I bragged to Goddess Meng that you were a top-tier gamer. But today, you’re playing like you’re high. What’s going on?”
“Jiajia, are you in a bad mood?”
Qi Sijia pushed up her gold-rimmed glasses, which had slipped down her nose. “Not at all.”
“That definitely means you are.”
As the others chattered, Meng Jiang directed her in-game character to a hiding spot and chimed in good-naturedly, “Tell us. Maybe we can help.”
Right then, Qi Sijia’s WeChat rang. Glancing down, she saw it was a call from a contact named “Paparazzi Pigeon.”
Qi Sijia couldn’t recall who that was at first. She declined, but the person called again.
Reluctantly, she answered.
After a few exchanges, Qi Sijia finally placed the voice—it was Ge Yarui, her ex from way back, the one who had propositioned her in the elevator earlier that day.
“Baby, what do you think of my proposal from today?”
Qi Sijia asked, “Who are you calling ‘baby’?”
“Don’t be mad,” Ge Yarui said. “Fine, if you don’t like the nickname, I won’t use it. But you’ve kept my contact all these years without blocking me. I thought you still had feelings for me.”
“Don’t reject me so quickly. I’ll give you time to think it over.”
The woman rambled on without giving Qi Sijia a chance to respond.
It was the first time Qi Sijia had encountered someone so self-absorbed. She was speechless.
Her headset mic was still on, and after a few seconds of silence, the in-game chat exploded.
“Damn, Qi Sijia.”
“So this is your boss?”
Annoyed, Qi Sijia clarified, “No, an ex.” A boss like that—a prized cabbage—would’ve been snatched up long ago.
At this point, Meng Jiang, who had been silent until now, finally lost her smile and asked coldly, “So you’ve been slacking off over an ex like this?”
Qi Sijia didn’t appreciate Meng Jiang’s accusatory, almost gleeful tone—as if she enjoyed seeing her struggle.
Irritated, she retorted, “Who’s slacking off?”
She was just expressing her frustration. Anyone forced into playing a game they didn’t care about would naturally underperform.
She had plenty of arguments in her head, but in reality, she was bad with words and didn’t know how to voice them. So she silently endured Meng Jiang’s unreasonable accusations.
From the moment she left work until now, she had been tangled in her own overthinking. But Meng Jiang’s interruption had temporarily distracted her.
She muttered, “Half and half.”
Qin Xiaofang, after taking down an enemy from a shipping container, butted in. “Seriously, Jiajia? You’ve already broken up. If you don’t like her, just reject her outright.”
Qi Sijia asked, “How?”
“Maybe you guys can give me some advice?”
Qin Xiaofang said, “Just tell her straight.”
“That won’t work. She doesn’t listen to rejections.”
“Then block her.”
“I’ve never had the habit of blocking exes,” Qi Sijia said reflexively. “Isn’t that a bit harsh?”
Meng Jiang suddenly spoke up, “Is that so?”
Realizing what she had done to Meng Jiang before, Qi Sijia opened her mouth but only managed an awkward cough.
Ahead, a team quietly moved from the direction of the containers. Seeing this, Meng Jiang hoisted her submachine gun, leaped onto the rooftop, and unleashed a barrage of bullets, riddling a set of containers ten meters away with holes.
After the team’s relentless firing, Meng Jiang’s voice was icy: “Simple.”
“Tell her you’re already taken.”
Qi Sijia looked troubled. “But she knows I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Meng Jiang’s mind worked swiftly, handling the situation like a seasoned expert, her tone devoid of emotion as she continued, “Then tell her you already have a sugar daddy.”
“That’s not good either. What if she doesn’t believe it?” Qi Sijia had a habit of overthinking things and reflexively doubting herself. “And who could even be my sugar daddy?”
Qi Sijia was always the type to dither endlessly. Anyone else would have lost patience by now, but at the moment, Meng Jiang was the only one in the team still patiently offering her advice.
“Or, if you need, I could reluctantly play the role of your sugar daddy for once.”
Meng Jiang’s voice came softly through the headset, her mature yet sweet tone carrying a hint of something tender. Qi Sijia’s teacup lid clattered to the table, and she froze for a moment.
“Thanks, but no need.”
“What the hell?” Qin Xiaofang interjected. “Be grateful, will you? Others would kill for Meng Jiang’s help. If it weren’t for the fact that you’ve been carrying us in the game these past few days, Meng Jiang wouldn’t even offer.”
Qi Sijia lowered her gaze, her fair fingers bearing a faint red burn mark. She flicked away the shattered droplets of water from her hand.
Her voice was barely above a whisper: “But I don’t want any more ties with my ex.”
“We know, of course we know.” Qin Xiaofang completely missed the subtext of Qi Sijia’s words, assuming she was reluctant to cut ties with the ex on the phone. Unbeknownst to her, among Qi Sijia’s exes was Meng Jiang herself.
Moving the game mission to the plaza, Qin Xiaofang said, “Isn’t this solving your problem? Triple Crown actress Meng Jiang is offering to act for you. There’s no way you’d get caught.”
As Qin Xiaofang finished speaking, Su Yaran chimed in from the side.
[Yeah, yeah, I wish I had that honor someday.]
Meng Jiang remained silent throughout, merely shouldering her submachine gun and firing at an astonishing speed. Despite being a newcomer with somewhat clumsy controls, she fearlessly dove into the poison zone, boldly hunting down enemies with audacious skill.
Qi Sijia had no choice but to stay by her side, constantly tossing grenades.
The moment the two were blown up, Qi Sijia stubbornly refused Meng Jiang’s help.
Meng Jiang’s eyes flickered with the video effects as she murmured under her breath, her voice barely audible, “Qi Sijia, why are you so guarded against me? Wasn’t it you who didn’t show up back then?”
Their in-game characters had just died, and the explosion was deafening. With her headphones on, Qi Sijia thought she might have misheard.
Her expression turned grave as she stared intently at the computer screen, pressing, “What did you just say?”
Even the trailing tone of her voice carried an unconscious urgency and wariness.
Meng Jiang paused, seeing her resistance, and expressionlessly backtracked, her voice cold. “Just kidding. Why would I have time to play pretend as your sugar daddy?”
