“Th-then okay.”
Chen Yonglong nodded awkwardly, but instead of leaving, he pulled a lunch box from his backpack and handed it to Jiang Changyi.
“Thanks for going out with me today. I know you probably only got that one piece of bread they handed out, right? Don’t turn it down—this is half a box of the meal the logistics gave the guard squad. I saved it for you while it’s still warm, hurry and eat it.”
Staring at the lunch box in front of him, Jiang Changyi went quiet.
He thought he already understood how loyal Chen Yonglong was, but he had clearly underestimated him.
Still, he pushed the box back.
“Dragon bro, can I call you that?”
Jiang Changyi’s tone finally turned serious, because he really didn’t want to hurt someone so genuine.
“I know you truly see me as a brother, so I’m not being polite here—I sincerely want you to eat this meal yourself.”
Chen Yonglong saw the seriousness on his face for the first time and didn’t interrupt, just let him finish.
“You’re the only awakened one we’ve got right now. The safety of thousands of people depends on you alone. If you go into battle hungry and something happens, it won’t just be you who suffers—it’ll be all of us.
That’s why I can’t, and shouldn’t, eat your food. I hope you understand what I mean.”
Chen Yonglong’s expression hardened. He nodded firmly.
“I get it.”
Brother Jiang is a selfless, great man!
I, Chen Yonglong, will never let down Brother Jiang’s trust!
As Jiang Changyi watched his expression, he suspected this loyal big wolfdog had gotten the wrong idea again.
Just then, Bai Zhenzhen suddenly hooked her arm around Chen Yonglong’s.
“Oh, Yonglong-ge, you’re such a good person, willing to be everyone’s protector.”
She had been holding it in, eavesdropping for ages, and finally found her chance to butt in—only to be ignored!
The moment she saw him pull out that hot lunch box, her stomach started growling.
She was a girl, sure, but one piece of bread wasn’t enough for anyone. After the day they’d all had, exhausted and starving, her stomach was long empty.
When she saw that he was about to give that half box of food to that sickly duck Jiang Changyi, her face nearly went red with anxiety.
Luckily, that annoying sick duck had the sense to refuse it, otherwise she wouldn’t have let it go.
She had already decided—that half box of food would be hers.
Chen Yonglong gave her a glance, but didn’t understand what she was trying to do.
“Do you need something?”
Bai Zhenzhen: “Oh, I was just wondering—do all the people downstairs get those meals too?”
Chen Yonglong shook his head.
“Only the guard squad. Logistics just gives out an extra piece of bread.”
That wasn’t a secret. Zong Qiong hadn’t planned on hiding it anyway. It made sense—those risking their lives to protect everyone should get to eat a little better.
Bai Zhenzhen fiddled with her hair, leaned in to let her perfume drift toward him, and said suggestively,
“Yonglong-ge, I meant… maybe I could have just a taste of that meal too?”
But Chen Yonglong completely misunderstood her.
“You want to join the guard squad too? I can talk to Zong Qiong for you, but I can’t promise he’ll say yes.”
As he spoke, he gave her a quick once-over, already guessing Zong Qiong wouldn’t agree to let such a frail girl join just to freeload food.
Still, Chen Yonglong didn’t think women in the guard squad were an issue. Plenty of the sports academy girls had joined, and some were just as strong as the men.
Idiot with no EQ!
Bai Zhenzhen cursed him inwardly, but forced a laugh.
“Oh no, what are you saying, I don’t deserve to join the guard squad. I just… just…”
She trailed off, unable to bring herself to say she wanted his food.
It was only the first day of the apocalypse—hunger hadn’t yet reached the point where people would toss aside their dignity and beg for a meal.
Meanwhile, Jiang Changyi was quietly entertained.
So this was what people meant by “airhead meets schemer”?
Absolutely hilarious.
Seeing her stammering, he cut straight in:
“You just want to eat his food, don’t you?”
The look of embarrassment and anger on her face made Chen Yonglong feel a surge of disdain.
Brother Jiang cared about everyone’s survival—he’d rather starve than take food from him.
And you? You don’t want to fight, but you want to freeload?
Chen Yonglong wasn’t stupid. Compared side by side, he found her unbearable to look at.
“I—I’m not some kind of glutton! Jiang Changyi, you shameless sick duck, you only refused his food because you were afraid you’d spread your venereal disease to him, right?!”
Bai Zhenzhen, flushed with shame and anger, thought she’d struck a nerve. Her face lit with smug malice as her words turned vicious.
She hadn’t spoken quietly either. Plenty of people nearby heard her—and juicy gossip like that made everyone’s ears perk up.
Not all of Jiang Changyi’s classmates were dead, either. They eagerly added their own “inside knowledge,” loudly confirming her story like it was gospel.
All eyes turned toward him, whispers rippling through the crowd.
But Jiang Changyi’s expression didn’t change. He looked as if they were talking about someone else entirely.
Chen Yonglong frowned. He didn’t believe Bai Zhenzhen for a second, but a flicker of doubt crossed his eyes—one Jiang Changyi caught immediately.
Still, he didn’t blame him.
Seeing Bai Zhenzhen’s smugness grow, her lies about to spiral into some melodramatic soap opera, Jiang Changyi simply raised his hand and slapped her.
Smack!!
The crack was so loud it silenced the room.
“First, that was for your lack of manners.”
“Your parents birthed you but never taught you how to behave, so I’ll do their job and teach you properly.”
He hadn’t held back. Her head rang, and it wasn’t until his words sank in that her rage came flooding back.
“You—”
She started to curse, but he slapped her again.
“Second, that was a warning.”
“Wake up. This isn’t the old world anymore. Don’t think the law of the past will protect scum like you.”
“Otherwise, one day someone will kill you, and you won’t even know which enemy you provoked.”
The whole room was frozen in silence.
The logistics staff started forward to intervene, but Chen Yonglong blocked their path.
