- Chapter 12 - The Possibility of Contracting a Handsome Guy
Jiang Changyi instantly pulled his hand back, once again putting distance between himself and Chen Yonglong.
The one who came up was Ma Jianyu, president of the martial arts club. He hurriedly said to Chen Yonglong:
“Quick, come downstairs with me, something’s happened outside!”
Chen Yonglong was currently the only awakened one. Zong Qiong had specifically instructed him to report before going anywhere, so they knew Chen Yonglong had come here.
“Something happened? A zombie riot? Or have the insectoids come?” Chen Yonglong’s expression grew grim as he turned to follow.
But he suddenly halted, remembering that Jiang Changyi seemed to have something to say just now.
“Hurry! If we’re any later, something bad will happen!” Ma Jianyu was sweating profusely, and seeing Chen Yonglong frozen in place, he nearly reached out to drag him away.
Chen Yonglong glanced back at Jiang Changyi. Words stuck in his throat like fish bones—he couldn’t spit them out, yet couldn’t swallow them either.
But in the end, he followed Ma Jianyu away.
Watching Chen Yonglong’s retreating figure, Jiang Changyi also swallowed back what he wanted to say.
When Chen Yonglong had been staring at him just now, he had felt something strange in his body, as if something was about to surge out.
The feeling was very similar to when he summoned Leo through the contract summoning—his body heating up with energy, which would then flow into the summoning array.
But somehow it felt incomplete. No matter how he tried, he couldn’t release the energy, leaving him stifled and uncomfortable.
But Chen Yonglong didn’t have a summoning array. Maybe that was why his contract skill didn’t work?
Jiang Changyi carefully reviewed the inherited memories of a contract master and realized that contracting a human required two conditions:
First, contract magic. Second, mental suppression along with the other party’s cooperation.
If the other party wasn’t willing, the difficulty of completing the contract would sharply increase.
This made Jiang Changyi conflicted.
He hadn’t originally planned to use this skill on humans—after all, compared to summoned beasts, humans were far weaker.
But after summoning Leo, he began to hesitate.
“Leo? (What do you mean?)”
“……”
The strength of a summoner lay in being able to summon beasts stronger than themselves, then hunting even stronger sacrifices to summon even mightier beasts, climbing step by step in power.
The problem was, right now he couldn’t summon anything very powerful. Which meant contracting awakened humans might be an alternative path.
So he still needed to make some effort with Chen Yonglong.
Wait a second…
Jiang Changyi found it odd. If monsters were attacking the cafeteria, why wasn’t there any noise?
He walked to the window and looked out into the pitch-black night.
The streetlights no longer worked. After sunset, there was no source of light at all. In the darkness, the only sounds were of flesh being gnawed or insects hissing.
For a long time to come, the nights of this world would likely only be filled with such sounds.
But this didn’t quite match what Ma Jianyu had said. What exactly had happened below?
When Jiang Changyi went downstairs, he saw a group of people whispering in heated discussion.
Zong Qiong glanced at him but said nothing.
Since even Zong Qiong didn’t drive him away, no one else would either.
So Jiang Changyi simply stayed openly at the side, eavesdropping.
“What are those dragonfly monsters searching for? They’ve been circling above the school for half an hour. If they don’t leave soon, they’ll definitely discover us.”
“Yeah, their encirclement is getting tighter and tighter.”
“The west cafeteria is guarded by the archery club. I think we should regroup with them—only their bows and arrows can counter flying monsters like these!”
From just a few words, Jiang Changyi pieced together what they were discussing.
He went to the window and looked carefully, and sure enough, he spotted several giant dragonflies flying overhead.
Seeing them on a phone screen hadn’t felt like much, but in reality—when they were the size of locomotives—the oppressive feeling was chilling.
For anyone afraid of arthropods, monsters this huge were a nightmare, especially with those massive crimson compound eyes that made one’s legs go weak.
No wonder they were so terrified. Against monsters like this, they really only had the archery club to rely on.
But the problem was, how could they regroup with the west cafeteria?
Outside was pitch-dark. Even if monsters came close, it would be hard to spot them in time with the naked eye. Trying to regroup now was the most dangerous option—it might even draw the dragonflies’ attention prematurely.
Zong Qiong’s left hand fingers tapped the air as if to a rhythm only he could hear, though he wasn’t wearing headphones.
He seemed deaf to the others’ discussion, deep in thought.
Truthfully, Jiang Changyi couldn’t think of any solution either.
If they stayed put, the dragonflies would soon discover them. But if they went on the offensive, they had no chance—airborne foes had all the advantage.
In such a dire situation, everyone naturally thought of the same person.
As their gazes fell on Zong Qiong, the young student council president who had displayed extraordinary calm since the very beginning of the apocalypse—rallying the martial arts club to fight back and leading students to seize the cafeteria as a temporary refuge.
In this new world, someone with leadership qualities like his naturally became the one others wanted to follow.
When he noticed everyone staring at him, Zong Qiong stopped his strange finger-tapping.
“There is no absolute dead end—only ignorant players,” he murmured in a voice only he could hear.
Then, smiling without emotion, he said aloud: “It’s very simple. Just… requires the courage to seek life in the jaws of death.”
Simple?
Everyone was puzzled.
“Form a suicide squad. Lure the dragonflies to the west cafeteria, and with them, complete the counterattack.”
Zong Qiong said it in the calmest of tones, as if discussing tonight’s dinner, though the words shocked everyone.
“Crazy—he’s gone crazy! How could that work? They can fly, how can we possibly outrun them?”
“Exactly! How is that different from sending people to their deaths?!”
“Is that so?” Zong Qiong’s smile remained, emotionless and unnerving.
“Haven’t you noticed? Their bodies are so large, they can’t fit through doors into buildings.”
“If we use the buildings along the way as safe houses, reaching the west cafeteria isn’t as impossible as it sounds.”
Everyone fell silent, realizing the plan might be feasible. But still…
The slow ones would die.
