- Chapter 13 - Zong Qiong’s Strategy
Jiang Changyi had to admit, Zong Qiong’s mind was a bug-like existence among these survivors.
He had originally thought that setting up a temporary shelter like this was already the student council president’s limit. But seeing how Zong Qiong responded to emergencies now, it was clear that Jiang Changyi had underestimated him.
While everyone else only focused on the threat of the giant mutant dragonflies, Zong Qiong considered the limitations of their massive size—and even found a way to use that as an advantage, proposing a feasible plan.
This refined, handsome man was really something else.
The more Jiang Changyi thought about it, the more he felt the idea was workable. Except…
Who would be willing to take on something so dangerous?
Everyone present lowered their heads, avoiding each other’s gaze, afraid they would be chosen.
That was only natural. People valued their lives. And after witnessing so many gruesome deaths today, fear of dying was only stronger.
In reality, there weren’t that many fearless heroes. Most preferred to hide behind others. Some would even sacrifice others’ lives to prolong their own.
That was human nature.
But a deep voice suddenly broke the silence—
“I’ll go.”
There was no fear on Chen Yonglong’s face, only calm, which made him all the more dazzling.
“I’m an Awakened. Killing those dragonflies is something I was going to do anyway.
Besides, if no one goes, those creatures will eventually discover the people in the cafeteria. When that happens, we’ll still have to face them.”
“So, I can go. I should go.”
Chen Yonglong wasn’t unaware of his situation.
He was the only Awakened among the survivors, the hero in everyone’s eyes, and their hope of survival.
If he didn’t step up now, then no one would trust him later.
But Jiang Changyi didn’t think Chen Yonglong was blinded by the crowd’s admiration. He truly wanted to carve out a path for everyone to live.
This guy… how could he be so stupid?
That was what people thought, but they also felt relieved. If Chen Yonglong wasn’t willing, then who else could take on this baiting mission?
Zong Qiong remained expressionless, as if he wasn’t surprised by Chen Yonglong’s fearlessness. He simply raised his hand slightly and said, “I’ll go too.”
“What?!”
“Senior, you… you’re our commander!”
“You can’t take such a risk!”
Those who had seen Zong Qiong set up the shelter knew his intelligence. Without his calm leadership, at least half of the survivors would be dead by now.
Even Jiang Changyi was shocked. He had thought Zong Qiong was only the strategist behind the scenes. But he had forgotten—Zong Qiong was also someone who had clawed his way out of life-and-death situations, with the same fearless resolve.
However, judging from the burning fervor in his eyes, it wasn’t clear if it was resolve… or desire.
No one knew what Zong Qiong was really thinking.
But once he stood up, others followed, volunteering for the baiting mission.
Jiang Changyi also raised his hand. Under Chen Yonglong’s surprised gaze, he said, “Count me in.”
It wasn’t that he was righteous. He simply knew staying in the cafeteria was no different from waiting to die. At worst, he could always break off and run alone.
Besides, while Rio didn’t look like much in a fight, it was still a summoned beast from another realm. Dealing with ordinary monsters shouldn’t be a problem.
“Rio! (You can always count on Rio!)”
Inside the contract space, Rio’s voice was full of confidence. If only it didn’t sound so childish, it might actually inspire some security.
Zong Qiong didn’t refuse Jiang Changyi’s participation. He simply pulled out his phone, opened a map of the school, and laid out the mission details:
“We’ll split into two teams, taking these two routes to the west cafeteria. The pace must stay nearly identical. Otherwise, the dragonflies lured away by one group might turn around and concentrate on the other.”
“That means… even if someone falls behind, you cannot turn back for them.”
His voice was as cold and mechanical as a machine, seemingly indifferent to how others felt, simply stating the requirements of the mission.
It was, without question, an order to abandon anyone who fell behind. But they had no other choice. If they didn’t, and one team got surrounded, they would be wiped out—then the other team would be next.
Zong Qiong’s brows tightened as he barked—
“Understood?”
“Understood!”
“Understood!”
The group nodded with heavy expressions.
Wan Xiaoyu looked at them all with deep worry.
Ever since Chen Yonglong’s group brought her back to the cafeteria, she had been serving as the shelter’s doctor, treating the wounded.
She had thought that would keep her safe. But reality was not so kind.
She approached Zong Qiong and handed him a paper packet filled with powdered herbs.
“This is a type of herbal medicine. I noticed those insect-like monsters seem to dislike its smell. Carrying it might help you.”
Wan Xiaoyu was already a working adult, naturally older than Zong Qiong. But in front of this calm, mature man, she felt as if her presence was suppressed.
Zong Qiong studied the packet but said nothing more than a soft thank you.
Time was short. Those preparing for the baiting mission hurried through final checks—dividing weapons, memorizing routes.
Chen Yonglong quietly told Jiang Changyi, “You don’t actually need to come. I’m enough.”
Though he didn’t say it outright, Jiang Changyi heard the concern in his tone.
“It’s fine. I won’t drag you down.”
Chen Yonglong frowned. “That’s not what I meant.”
He wanted to explain more, but Zong Qiong was already urging everyone to get ready.
Chen Yonglong could only grit his teeth, sighing as he muttered, “Stay close to me!”
Then, like a gust of wind, the sturdy buzz-cut man dashed to the front, leading the first team out of the cafeteria.
They followed him quickly and quietly—Jiang Changyi among them.
Outside, many of the monsters had already been cleared by the guard team. The rest were still inside the buildings, so their appearance didn’t cause much commotion.
But soon, the giant dragonflies circling above spotted them. With a shrill screech, they dove down.
The massive insectoid monsters plummeting from the sky carried the same crushing pressure as a speeding train, making hearts pound violently.
Golden, mysterious patterns suddenly rippled across Chen Yonglong’s body, and his speed surged higher and higher!
