- Chapter 14 - For You, I Became a Werewolf
At the very moment their paths crossed with the colossal mutant dragonfly, Chen Yonglong swung his wooden sword with all his might, the veins in his arms bulging as his muscles strained to the limit.
Yet such a ferocious strike was effortlessly severed by the creature’s razor-sharp forelimbs!
Staring at the broken stump of his sword, Chen Yonglong immediately turned and bolted, shouting loudly:
“Run! Follow me!!”
If even Chen Yonglong, empowered as a berserker, had suffered such a setback, the others had no thought of fighting back. Without needing his command, everyone had already begun running for their lives.
Watching this scene, Zong Qiong called out to the rear group:
“Don’t hesitate—stay close!”
He then dashed out as well, followed closely by the members of the second squad.
Overhead, the giant dragonflies, alerted by the first piercing insect screech, swarmed toward them. Noticing Zong Qiong’s squad nearby, the swarm split into two groups, chasing both at once.
Jiang Changyi followed closely behind Chen Yonglong, sprinting into the first building along their escape route. The dragonflies that had missed their strike swooped low, banking sharply to come after them again.
One unlucky member of the first squad, running at the rear, suddenly felt a chilling breeze at the back of his neck. In an instant, a blade-like forelimb sliced clean through his throat.
He didn’t even feel pain before his head was lopped off, bl00d spurting like a crimson fountain from his neck.
His body collapsed with a dull thud, spraying hot bl00d several meters away, splattering others and making one man’s knees buckle in terror.
“Gu…lu…lu…”
The severed head rolled across the ground, the youthful face mangled and unrecognizable.
Everyone in the second squad saw this grisly sight. Sheer horror drove them to run even faster, as if they could only survive by dropping to all fours and sprinting like beasts.
Fortunately, Zong Qiong’s prediction proved correct—the dragonflies couldn’t enter the buildings. With wings spanning more than ten meters, forcing their way inside would cripple them.
This realization brought everyone a flicker of hope. At the very least, as long as they hid indoors, the monsters couldn’t reach them.
Outside, the dragonflies circled the buildings, searching for the humans that had slipped inside.
Chen Yonglong, however, didn’t stop after entering. Just as Zong Qiong had instructed, he kept charging forward along the predetermined route.
“Haa… haa…”
His chest heaved violently, like a mountain breathing.
Eyes locked on the exit ahead, he failed to notice the scarlet-shelled beetle lurking around the corner of the wall.
“Chiii—!!”
The red beetle shrieked, lunging with its razor forelimbs. Chen Yonglong was moving too fast, so its attack instead fell upon those trailing behind.
“?!”
Jiang Changyi instantly sensed the murderous intent, but the ambush was too sudden—he had no time to react.
The beetle’s wings buzzed, its spiked limbs swinging like a facehugger as it lunged for his head.
“Damn!!”
He raised his baseball bat to block, planning to parry first before countering—but before he could, hot bl00d splattered across his face.
“Chen… Chen Yonglong?!”
The dark-skinned athlete stood in front of him, taking the strike directly with his arm. Both sides of his forearm were gouged to the bone, bl00d gushing and spraying onto Jiang Changyi’s face.
But the beetle was dead—its soft abdomen skewered by the broken wooden sword in Chen Yonglong’s grip.
Bl00d seeped into Jiang Changyi’s eyes, dyeing his world a vivid red.
He stared in disbelief at the man before him—the overly honest, straight-laced jock.
“Chen Yonglong…”
“Are you insane?!”
“Why would you block that for me?!!”
“Are you a pig?!”
“We barely even know each other—why would you…”
Why would you use your life to save someone like me?
Jiang Changyi could say no more. Tears overwhelmed his breath, choking him.
Hearing those familiar insults, just like when they first met, Chen Yonglong gave a pale smile:
“Now… can you consider me a friend, Jiang Changyi?”
“You idiot… you big idiot!!”
Chen Yonglong hadn’t gone mad—but Jiang Changyi felt like he would. What on earth was this athlete thinking?!
He fought to suppress the chaos in his heart—outside, the dragonflies still circled, and another squad was depending on them. Now Chen Yonglong was wounded, and their bait-and-lure mission was on the verge of failure!
He couldn’t lose control. He had to force himself to make the coldest, most rational choice.
Jiang Changyi tore off his shirt, ready to use it as a bandage, but Chen Yonglong stopped him.
“Go. Lead them out. Don’t worry about me.”
His face was growing pale from bl00d loss, but his voice was firm as he pushed Jiang Changyi away.
“Are you crazy? I’m not an awakener!” Jiang Changyi’s eyes reddened, realizing he still didn’t truly understand this man.
This dark-skinned, cropped-haired guy—this straight-laced jock—was so righteous it was terrifying.
“I believe you can do it.”
The unwavering determination in Chen Yonglong’s gaze was unlike anything Jiang Changyi had ever seen.
Even my own father treated me like a stranger… so why would you…
Jiang Changyi furrowed his brows tightly.
“…Stay alive. I’ll come back for you!”
Biting down hard, he dashed out with burning rage.
Seeing Chen Yonglong injured, the others’ nerves had already snapped—they were certain they were doomed. But Jiang Changyi had already rushed out, so they had no choice but to follow.
“Chiii!!!”
The dragonflies, which had been preparing to dive at the second squad, immediately turned back toward the first when they saw them emerge.
Jiang Changyi’s expression hardened. He pumped his legs faster, refusing to glance back at the terrifying insect monsters.
Every muscle in his body burned from the effort, oxygen flooding out of his bl00d, yet his mind only grew colder and sharper.
Twenty meters to the next building…
At this speed…
There’s still a chance!
The gusts of wind from his sprint stung his face, but he never slowed, charging straight into the entrance.
“Chiii!!!”
The dragonflies had to pull up at least ten meters before the doorway or else they’d slam into the walls, crippling themselves.
—Unless they attacked from the sides.
Shhhk!!
A sharp sound rang out. One dragonfly swooped in from the flank, cleaving a man’s head clean off.
The severed head, propelled by momentum, flew over ten meters before hitting the ground!
The boy running behind him didn’t react in time and crashed into the decapitated corpse. Warm bl00d drenched him, and the lingering heat of the lifeless body made him scream in sheer terror, his cries echoing through the halls.
