- Chapter 15 - Awakening and Leveling Up
Crashing head-on into a headless corpse—there probably aren’t many people who could face that without fear.
But the boy’s terror didn’t last long, because in the next second, with no ability to resist, he was decapitated in the exact same way by another giant monster dragonfly.
He probably never imagined that after Dragon Country had gone so many years without such things, there would still be a risk of losing one’s head.
Such a horrifying death sent chills through everyone, and they sprinted for their lives.
At the very front, Jiang Changyi had entered a strange state. His reflexes became sharper, he could sense his surroundings more keenly, and he was able to react almost instantly.
At the same time, however, his perception of pain and fatigue was fading.
He kept running, noticing fewer and fewer footsteps behind him, but he didn’t stop.
This lure-the-enemy mission only required one person to reach the West Cafeteria for it to count as a success—because no matter what, the giant monster dragonflies would chase whoever was running. The archers stationed at the West Cafeteria were their only hope of counterattack.
What’s more, Chen Yonglong was still injured, and Jiang Changyi had to hurry and finish the mission so he could go back and save him.
His mind, crammed full with the mission, left him no space to reflect on why he was risking his life for someone he had only met recently. He only knew one thing: if Chen Yonglong died like this, he would be tormented with guilt for the rest of his life.
Taking advantage of a moment when no one was paying attention, Jiang Changyi released Lio, letting the little spirit help distract or slow down some of the giant monster dragonflies.
Although Lio was still just a juvenile form, at least it could fly.
Even if it could only lure away one dragonfly, that would already be a huge help.
“Lio~ (It’s my time to shine~)”
The beige-colored fluffy cub shot forward in a blur, flying even faster than Jiang Changyi.
Seeing this, Jiang Changyi finally breathed a little easier—summoning the little one hadn’t been in vain.
As he burst out of the building again, he caught sight of the scene outside.
High above, a tiny speck the size of a soybean was being chased by a dragonfly, while the other two still loitered at the doorway, waiting for a chance to strike.
“You gotta be kidding me!”
Jiang Changyi roared.
He had been prepared. The moment a dragonfly dove straight at him, he hurled a fire extinguisher into its path, smashing it right in the head.
He’d grabbed the extinguisher earlier while running through the building, knowing full well the monsters would attack him.
And since their attack pattern seemed limited to dive-bombing, even if the extinguisher alone wasn’t strong enough to deal much damage, colliding with it head-on during a dive would be a different story.
“Bang!!”
The plunging dragonfly was like a massive truck barreling toward him. But as everyone knows—
Force works both ways.
Smashing into the extinguisher, its head practically exploded. Half its skull caved in, and even its millstone-sized compound eyes shattered into fragments.
“Hissss—”
Its enormous body slammed into the ground and skidded forward under its own momentum, leaving a long streak of green bl00d across the pavement.
Just like that, Jiang Changyi had used its own attack pattern against it to finish off the terrifying insectoid monster.
Although he very much wanted to use the dragonfly’s corpse as a sacrifice for another summoning—the value of a dragonfly was obviously higher than that of a red beetle—the other dragonflies clearly weren’t going to give him the time.
So he could only keep sprinting with all his strength, racing toward the West Cafeteria.
The gap between the first and second squads had widened. Jiang Changyi could still hear screams from that direction, suggesting their casualties were severe.
All he could do was hope they could hold on, like he had, because otherwise there was no way he could escape from a swarm of dragonflies alone.
This stretch of road was a dead zone—nearly a hundred meters with no buildings for cover. Only a row of trees by the roadside could slightly hinder the dragonflies’ dives.
And besides that, zombies and red beetles lurked there too.
“Damn it!”
Jiang Changyi cursed furiously.
Just the sight of those monsters was infuriating. As if the suffocating pressure of the dragonflies above wasn’t enough, he also had to fend off these pests.
“Die!!”
Covered in bl00d, his whole aura turned savage and violent. If someone else saw him right now, they might mistake him for a zombie.
“Wham!!!”
One red beetle lunged for his face, only to be swatted away like a baseball by his swing. Whether it lived or not, it definitely wasn’t getting up again.
That strike left his arm weak and trembling, but the sensation of swinging with everything he had brought him a strange comfort, like gulping down ice-cold pure water on a sweltering summer day.
Of course, there were other, more indulgent comparisons—but those weren’t fit to be said aloud~
As he ran, marveling at the wonders of his body, Lio’s voice suddenly echoed through their mental link: “Lio~”
“(Master~ you just had an awakening, you leveled up~)”
“(Contractors are strong in terms of spiritual power, but through certain opportunities and training, they can also enhance their physical strength with it!)”
Hearing this, Jiang Changyi felt enlightened. His resistance to the “Contractor” class as an awakened profession softened considerably.
So awakeneds could actually level up—and Contractors could boost their close-combat power too. That meant he wouldn’t always be helpless when faced with danger.
Ever since he’d seen Chen Yonglong injured and isolated because of him, Jiang Changyi’s hunger for strength had grown ferociously.
Without power, even in a world where rules were being rewritten, he couldn’t live freely—he couldn’t even protect the people he wanted to protect.
“But how about you? You’re not too badly hurt, are you?”
Since it could still talk with him, he figured Lio’s situation wasn’t too dire.
But the little cub only chirped back cheerfully: “Lio~ (Of course not! These little bugs can’t even keep up with my tail~)”
Jiang Changyi didn’t really believe something that looked like a tiny kitten could handle the fight so easily, but since it was still being playful, at least it wasn’t in danger.
So he put it out of his mind and focused on the mission.
With Lio drawing some of the heat, plus the one dragonfly he’d already slain, the pressure was much lighter now.
At last, Jiang Changyi reached the final building beside the West Cafeteria without serious mishap. Now all he needed to do was alert the archers inside to prepare for battle.
