- Chapter 16 - You Were Not Invited
Jiang Changyi reached the doorway—just one last stretch and he would arrive at the west cafeteria.
But behind him, none of his teammates were following anymore.
If they hadn’t already been killed by the monsters on the road or the giant mutant dragonflies in the sky, then they had probably run away or hidden somewhere.
Jiang Changyi’s expression was solemn.
Death was the main theme of the apocalypse. Sympathy only hindered survivors from moving forward, yet if one became indifferent to death, then they were no different from the walking corpses.
He looked up at the giant dragonfly overhead, preparing to repeat his trick with the fire extinguisher and land another critical blow.
But this dragonfly didn’t dive straight down—it circled in the air.
“…Is it wary of me?”
“Could it be these insects have intelligence? It saw me use one of its kind’s dive momentum to kill it, so it doesn’t dare charge recklessly?”
“Damn it…”
The distance was about fifty meters. Even if he ran with everything he had, the dragonfly’s diving speed was enough to slice off his head halfway there.
“Giiiii!!”
The dragonfly shrieked angrily, seemingly enraged at the struggle of a mere human ant.
Jiang Changyi gave a helpless laugh. He hadn’t expected to be locked in a standoff with a monster.
But he couldn’t stop—Chen Yonglong’s wound was deep, he could die at any moment from bl00d loss. The longer he delayed, the greater the danger.
“Heh.” Jiang Changyi gave a bitter smile. He hadn’t thought that someone who always prided himself on being selfish would one day risk his life for another.
“Consider it a life for a life then.”
He rested the bat across his shoulder, crouched low, and burst forward like the wind.
…
Guo Beibei was a member of the archery club.
When the apocalypse broke out, she had been practicing in the club’s activity room.
When a classmate suddenly went rabid and started biting people, Guo Beibei didn’t flinch. She immediately grabbed a chair and smashed it down.
“Little bastard, see if I don’t smash you flat!”
She was no delicate princess. The metal chair legs bent under her blows, and she pounded the shrieking zombie into a bloodied mess.
Spitting to the side, she fled with the other club members.
Later, under Zong Qiong’s command, she went to the west cafeteria and helped clear out a second temporary shelter.
And most importantly—Guo Beibei awakened.
Her awakened class was Divine Archer, able to form energy into arrows with special properties.
Thanks to this, she was considered top combat power in the west cafeteria shelter.
Naturally, she noticed the giant dragonflies circling above the school. What unsettled her was that they seemed to be slowly surrounding them.
Just as everyone was worrying about how to deal with these flying monsters, the dragonflies suddenly veered eastward, as if attracted by something.
Zong Qiong was a smart man—Guo Beibei knew this. She figured the strange behavior of the dragonflies must be part of his plan.
So, when she saw Jiang Changyi sprinting across open ground with a dragonfly diving at him, she immediately knew what she had to do.
“Run!”
Guo Beibei shouted to Jiang Changyi and stepped out of the cafeteria.
She raised her arm, drew her bow in one fluid motion. Purple lightning crackled around the sharp arrowhead, like fluffy willow catkins made of electricity. Her hair lifted wildly as though in a storm, flaring out behind her, a display of fearsome power.
Seeing this, Jiang Changyi breathed a sigh of relief. With an awakened archer in the cafeteria, taking down these dragonflies might not be impossible.
But he also knew she couldn’t reach that altitude—the only chance would be the split second when the dragonfly dived.
Jiang Changyi ran across the vast open ground, seemingly with nowhere to escape. One dive would be enough to take his life.
The dragonfly screeched, excited, diving sharply with its bladed forelimbs spread wide. In its bl00d-red compound eyes, it seemed already to envision Jiang Changyi’s head being severed.
“Giiiiii!!!”
“Click.”
What else could Jiang Changyi do?
Run!
All he could do was pray the awakened one was reliable.
As the gap between man and beast narrowed, Jiang Changyi felt the world slow down.
He could see the monster’s massive body, the tremor of its transparent wings.
That icy chill… was this what death felt like?
Whoosh!
A streak of violet light shot from the distance, piercing straight through the dragonfly’s head.
“Gyaaaaa——!!!”
It shrieked, but the sound weakened, until finally it crashed hard into the ground.
“Huff… huff…”
Jiang Changyi gasped violently for breath. The dragonfly’s scythe-like limbs had stopped just half a meter away from him. If that arrow had been even a moment later, he would’ve been in pieces.
Cold sweat drenched his back as the fear sank in.
Meanwhile, Zong Qiong also ran out from a building, with three more dragonflies circling overhead.
No one else emerged behind him—likely already dead.
But none of that concerned him now.
Jiang Changyi turned and ran back.
He would leave the rest of the dragonflies to the archer at the cafeteria—he had no strength left, and no way to fight creatures dominating the sky.
That silly, dark-skinned jock was still waiting for him to return and save him.
Jiang Changyi recalled that pure, bright smile, and the corners of his mouth lifted.
“Please… don’t let anything happen!”
The path back was clear now—no dragonflies, and the zombies and red beetles were hardly a threat. Though exhausted, Jiang Changyi still made good speed.
But when he returned to the spot where Chen Yonglong had been left, he froze at the sight.
“…”
Chen Yonglong sat slumped against the wall, half-lying, half-sitting. Beside him knelt another man—judging from the clothes and back, it was Wang Xin, who had been bitten earlier in the classroom.
But…
Not only was Wang Xin here, he was pressed close to Chen Yonglong’s face. They were… kissing.
Jiang Changyi stood behind them, chest aching—whether from exhaustion or something else, he didn’t know.
When Wang Xin sat back up, Jiang Changyi saw the contentment and bliss on Chen Yonglong’s face.
“No wonder…”
No wonder Chen Yonglong cared so much for Wang Xin—even after being bitten, he still helped him again and again.
So… they were lovers.
Jiang Changyi turned away silently.
So it was just my wishful thinking. The person he needed was never me.
