- Chapter 18 - An Ex-Boyfriend Belongs in His Coffin
The undisguised malice dripping from Peng Pai’s mouth made Guo Beibei frown. She’d never liked this shifty-looking guy back in the club, and hearing him say something like this now only made her dislike him more.
After all, Jiang Changyi had carried out Zong Qiong’s plan to lure the monsters, drawing away and helping eliminate the giant dragonflies that threatened the school’s safety. How could Peng Pai attack him personally without knowing the full situation?
Guo Beibei looked baffled, then snapped:
“Peng Pai, you little rat, you’re so damn petty. Can’t expect ivory from a dog’s mouth, huh? Was that any way to talk? When we were fighting, you didn’t put in any effort, and now here you are, spewing sh1t everywhere!”
Her sharp tongue startled Jiang Changyi. Was this the attack power of a modern-day streamer?
Too strong. Not a single pause in her breath.
But Jiang Changyi wasn’t about to play the pitiful saint type, pretending to be noble and wronged while letting someone else defend him. Instead, he turned a cold gaze on Peng Pai and sneered:
“An ex-boyfriend should stay put in his coffin, understand? Running around like a mutt rolling in sh1t only makes people despise you. If you think belittling others makes you look superior, you’re dead wrong. Not everyone’s as blind and shallow as you.”
“You—!” Peng Pai hadn’t even had the chance to fire back at Guo Beibei before Jiang Changyi’s words had his face flushing red.
Jiang Changyi curled his lip, eyes full of contempt:
“When we were together, I really thought you genuinely liked me. Didn’t realize you were burning through the money I worked so hard to earn while secretly trashing me as worthless behind my back.”
“When you found a richer guy and dumped me, I could only say I’m grateful—you helped me cut ties early and rid myself of a backstabbing ingrate like you. You even cured me of my lovesick fool phase.”
Guo Beibei, listening, finally understood why Peng Pai had so much venom toward Jiang Changyi. Her contempt for him deepened—
So he was just a parasite living off his partner’s money. No wonder he could afford to join the Archery Club while still collecting hardship subsidies. Turns out he’d been shamelessly spending his boyfriend’s cash.
Zong Qiong wasn’t interested in this emotional drama. After listening for a moment, he walked off, probably to check if the giant dragonflies’ corpses contained magic crystals.
Jiang Changyi also couldn’t be bothered to waste words on Peng Pai. He went straight to digging out the crystal from the giant dragonfly he’d lured.
With Leo’s guidance, he quickly unearthed a bl00d-red magic crystal.
Then he turned to Guo Beibei and said:
“Hi. I was the one who lured this giant dragonfly, risked my life to draw it into your range. I also shared the intel that monsters drop crystals. So you won’t have any objection if I keep this one, right?”
“I’ve got no objections.” Guo Beibei agreed without hesitation.
“I object!” Peng Pai suddenly charged forward, reaching to snatch the crystal.
“?”
Like hell Jiang Changyi was going to let him succeed. He smacked away Peng Pai’s hand and shot him a cold, disdainful look:
“And who the hell are you to object? You didn’t lift a finger in the fight. You think you’re somebody? Are you really this shameless, or just plain stupid?”
Peng Pai grew desperate and shoved at him:
“I’m warning you, you filthy whore—don’t refuse a toast only to drink the forfeit! You’re a useless piece of trash. Holding onto that crystal is a waste—you should hand it to an Awakened. At least they’d owe you a favor! And besides, if someone hadn’t saved you just now, your sorry life would already be over!”
His voice rose louder and louder. The more people overheard, the more they pieced together, and soon the crowd wore looks of gleeful curiosity, ready to watch the drama unfold.
Jiang Changyi’s face went cold. He hated this feeling.
From childhood to now, people had always looked at him this way—like spectators eager for a show. The divorce had made everyone sneer at his family. No one respected his mother Wu Wanqiu’s decision, treating her as the one who betrayed their home.
But who had ever tried to understand her pain?
If a woman really had choices, would she willingly break her family apart? Only when she’d truly reached despair would she make such a cruel choice.
There’s a saying—if the scar isn’t on your own body, you’ll never know how much it hurts.
That’s why Jiang Changyi despised so-called “rational onlookers.” What gave them the right to judge?
Seeing his expression darken, Guo Beibei didn’t stay silent. She grabbed Peng Pai like a chicken and tossed him aside.
“You got no shame? I already said the crystal’s his. Who the hell are you to butt in? Who do you think you are? This isn’t your place to talk!”
“You little pest, quit trying to look smart by giving away something that isn’t yours. Idiot! Think you’re clever, huh? You’re nothing!”
Her snarling, tooth-baring retorts clashed hilariously with her cute, delicate face—a kind of absurd, comical contrast.
She’s kind of interesting, Jiang Changyi thought, his opinion of her improving.
At this point, Peng Pai had no choice but to swallow his anger. Jiang Changyi thanked Guo Beibei, then turned and left.
How they split the remaining crystals wasn’t his concern.
And he had no intention of returning to the East Cafeteria either. After Bai Zhenzhen and Peng Pai’s antics, he realized he truly couldn’t fit into a group. So he decided to head back to the dorm for a good sleep. After resting, he’d leave the school to find his family.
Meanwhile, elsewhere—Chen Yonglong, left behind injured and thinking he was about to die, suddenly saw his best buddy Wang Xin appear before him.
“So this is the life-flashing-before-your-eyes thing? Old Wang, are you here to take me to the underworld? Didn’t think it’d be you with me at the end…”
Wang Xin couldn’t help but laugh at the melodrama on his friend’s face.
“Go to the underworld? What am I, a grim reaper to you?”
“You… you’re really Old Wang?!” Chen Yonglong’s eyes lit up, and he tried to sit up.
Wang Xin stopped him. “Stay put. You’re hurt badly. Try being kinder to yourself.”
Chen Yonglong leaned back against the wall obediently. Though weak, seeing his best friend alive filled him with joy.
“Old Wang, you’re really okay! That’s great, that’s… really great…”
“Yeah.” Wang Xin himself thought fate was strange. “I was this close to turning into a zombie, but then I Awakened. The infection was purified.”
“You Awakened?!” Chen Yonglong’s eyes shone with delight, but then dimmed. “Too bad… I’m too injured. Old Wang, you’ve got to take care of yourself.”
“Just stay put. My Awakened class is Reviver—I can heal you.”
Wang Xin cupped his friend’s chin, faint golden light streaming from his seven orifices, slowly drifting into Chen Yonglong’s body to heal his wounds.
And just then—when Jiang Changyi returned, what he saw was exactly this scene.
