“Zong Qiong, have you seen where Jiang Changyi went?”
Chen Yonglong, his wounds now healed, hurried anxiously to Zong Qiong to ask about Jiang Changyi’s whereabouts.
He hadn’t expected that this solitary and stubborn boy would really make it all the way to the West Canteen alone. But after that, he vanished—almost like he had left the campus entirely.
This left Chen Yonglong uneasy, with a hollow feeling in his chest.
What’s more, Jiang Changyi knew he was injured, so why hadn’t he even come back to check on him?
Could it be… they weren’t even friends?
Zong Qiong gave him a glance. “He didn’t say where he was going, but he headed in the direction of the dorms. Instead of worrying about him, you should—”
Before he could finish, Chen Yonglong was already gone, sprinting toward the dorms.
“…”
“You should be helping clear the monsters out of the school.”
Zong Qiong sighed helplessly, then turned to gather people to start the day’s work.
These people tangled up in romance and drama… they didn’t understand what the world was truly going through.
But Jiang Changyi did. That’s why he chose to leave.
He didn’t want to join groups anymore, nor did he want to be surrounded by those disgusting people.
Spending too long around them wouldn’t just sour his mood—it wouldn’t be healthy.
He needed to stockpile supplies and grow stronger!
What was a Contract Master?
A Contract Master grew stronger as their contracted beings grew stronger, and the stronger the contracted beings became, the stronger the master would be in turn!
A cycle like that—Contract Masters could snowball their way to absurd levels of power!
Didn’t they understand how priceless that was?
Jiang Changyi returned to the dorm building and, with Lio, started clearing out monsters.
So long as they didn’t run into giant monster dragonflies, armored centipedes, or venomous spiders, the two of them weren’t really in danger.
And Lio hadn’t been bragging—though small in size, his damage against insect-type monsters was practically a hard counter. He could slice through red beetles with a single wind blade.
With Lio’s strength and one of the giant dragonfly’s magic crystals used for summoning, Jiang Changyi felt confident enough to head home for his mother Wu Wanqiu and his younger sister Jiang Changsi.
There were three crystals in total—one he had used to recover energy, one to attempt a contract summon, and the last he gave to Lio as food, since it was said to speed up his growth and increase his potential.
If Lio wasn’t lying, then he really was some kind of “legendary spirit” like he claimed. Pouring some resources into him wasn’t a bad investment.
Back in his dorm, Jiang Changyi locked the windows and doors, left Lio on lookout, then lay down on the bed for a nap.
Without his roommates, the dorm was unusually quiet. Even the other dorms lacked the usual rowdy gaming noises—most of them were probably either monster feed or had already fled.
He slept until he naturally woke, feeling lighter and more refreshed than ever.
“Lio~”
A little fluffball wriggled into Jiang Changyi’s arms, acting like a clingy kitten, rubbing its head against his hand in a clear demand for pats.
“Geez, you’re just too cute.” Jiang Changyi grinned, ruffling the top of Lio’s fuzzy head.
“Lio~” The tiny creature was almost unbearably adorable.
“All right, thanks for keeping watch all night. Go rest in the contract space for a while.”
After a quick wash at the still-functioning tap, Jiang Changyi pulled out the magic crystal to begin a contract summon.
The number of summons a Contract Master could perform and the number of beings they could maintain depended entirely on their mental strength.
But Lio had told him that his spiritual power was vast, like the deep seas of Atlantis—after all, his contract space was an entire miniature world with sunlight, clouds, and soil.
Jiang Changyi: “Wait, you mean other Contract Masters’ spaces don’t look like this?”
Lio: “Lio! (Of course not! Almost every Contract Master’s space is void. Forget sunlight and soil—you can’t even see your own claws in there!)”
Jiang Changyi fell into thought. “So that means… I can farm in mine?”
Lio: “…”
Master, your thought process is really something else.
Lio: “Lio~ (But it’s true—Master’s space could have houses built, made into a comfortable environment. That might even increase the chance of contracting powerful beings!)”
“You’ve got a point.”
He could contract someone to be a farmhand later!
A wicked grin spread across Jiang Changyi’s face as he began scheming the foundations of his future agricultural empire.
If farming was possible, then factories probably were too, right?
If factories were possible… wouldn’t that mean he could be fully self-sufficient?
For others, the apocalypse was a nightmare. For him, it could be paradise.
The only question was—how many farmhand-contracts would he need to fill the space with workers?
Watching his master grin more maniacally by the second, Lio hurriedly tried to pull him back to his senses: “Lio~ (Master, being a Contract Master is supposed to be a prestigious profession~)”
“All right, all right, I know.”
Jiang Changyi was only teasing Lio. People needed dreams to keep going, otherwise how could anyone survive?
It was just a pity—aside from contract beasts, no other sentient beings could enter the contract space. Otherwise, he really would have placed his mother and sister inside, letting them live a peaceful, idyllic life amid the apocalypse.
But the bond between a Contract Master and their contracted being wasn’t equal. The master’s orders always overrode the summoned.
Jiang Changyi couldn’t accept putting his mother and sister under that kind of bond.
People were shaped by habit—he feared that if he ever contracted them, he’d slowly start treating them the same way he did his other summons.
And that would be too tragic.
Having made up his mind, Jiang Changyi began the summoning ritual.
With the inherited knowledge of a Contract Master, all he had to do was follow his muscle memory.
After chanting the incantation, the magic circle lit up, and Jiang Changyi felt his consciousness brush against countless other worlds.
Unlike his first summoning, this time he could distinguish between them—perhaps because he had grown stronger.
There was a ninja war world full of flying jutsu, a peaceful one with pet-like monsters, and countless high-magic worlds with sorcery and spellcraft.
Who should he pick?
That purple mecha warrior looked cool. That exploding-armored saint fighter wasn’t bad either.
Hiss… that blindfolded pretty boy was something else too!
Jiang Changyi’s cheeks flushed—this felt like being an emperor picking concubines.
Wasn’t coming to the apocalypse just for this?
