- Chapter 20 - We Really Are Just Bros
“Boom—”
With a puff of white smoke, the bl00d-red magic crystal vanished, replaced by a young man with silver hair and a black mask covering his face.
Strapped across his back was a short blade; white bandages wrapped around his ankles. His black shorts and mesh compression training shirt fully showed off his broad shoulders, narrow waist, and long legs.
Though a scar crossed his right eye, his gaze looked lazy—like a dead fish, devoid of any killing intent.
Jiang Changyi hadn’t chosen his contract partner for looks alone.
He also considered intelligence, experience, and temperament. With his current strength, he wasn’t able to summon some overwhelming powerhouse. Besides, true power wasn’t determined by energy reserves alone.
And this silver-haired young man—once a rising star in the Arcane Wars—was, without a doubt, a very solid choice.
“Hello, I’m Contract Master Jiang Changyi.”
“Yes. My name is Chu Yesheng.”
Chu Yesheng’s voice was raspy. Though young, his tone carried a mature, sensual weight.
Jiang Changyi’s cheeks flushed red, his manner turning awkward. “Mm, got it. Now let me see your abs.”
Chu Yesheng: “?”
What was up with this contract master…?
It felt like he’d just made a huge mistake, trapping himself in a tiger’s den.
Or… maybe the contract master just wanted to inspect his training results?
Out of respect, Chu Yesheng thought for a moment, then lifted his shirt.
Fair skin, well-defined abs, and a trim waistline shaped like an hourglass—all very pleasing to Jiang Changyi’s eyes.
“Nice, very nice…” Jiang nodded in satisfaction.
So that really was it? He just wanted to check his muscle tone?
I’ve been reading too much Azure Paradise, Chu Yesheng thought, embarrassed. I actually brought book plotlines into reality.
He shook his head at himself. Better cut down on those uncle-written novels.
If he knew what awaited him in the future, he might’ve cursed his current self for being such a fool…
For now, Jiang Changyi helped Chu Yesheng sit properly on the bed.
“Since you’re in this world now, your outfit can’t stand out as weird. The clothes and pants are fine, hehe…”
Jiang really loved that mesh design. In Yesheng’s world, it was meant for cooling after heavy exertion, but here it also created excellent eye candy.
“But your shoes don’t fit this world at all. Conditions are limited—you’ll have to wear mine for now. I’ve got new socks at least, but shoes…”
He pulled out a pair of socks, choosing black since they wouldn’t show dirt so easily in the apocalypse.
As for shoes—that was a sizing problem.
“Ah, mine are way too small for you… tch.”
It was a little gross to share, but he couldn’t let Chu Yesheng walk barefoot.
After trying a roommate’s pair and finding they fit, Chu slipped on some white basketball shoes.
“Just make do for now. Once we raid the mall today, I’ll definitely get you a pair that’s stylish and fits perfectly!” Jiang’s eyes sparkled.
Chu didn’t care whether someone else had worn them before. Back in his world, shoes this well-crafted were rare.
He stomped lightly on the floor—the soft cotton socks hugged his feet comfortably, the cushioned sole rebounded with every step. He felt he could fight even better with these on.
Still… why emphasize “stylish”?
Strange. Was the contract master factoring appearance into combat performance?
What a meticulous contract master.
Behind the mask, Chu Yesheng’s lips curved faintly. His impression of Jiang improved a little.
Though this quiet silver-haired man didn’t talk much, Jiang was very satisfied with him. Even if he weren’t that strong, just looking at him was a joy.
Jiang felt cheerful. Now that the summoning was complete, it was time to leave the school.
In the contract space, poor Lio was sleeping: So Master prefers humans after all? Sob sob…
After reminding Chu to guard him closely, Jiang led the way out of the dormitory.
At dawn, the monsters that had rested overnight swarmed out again, hunting humans to fill their empty stomachs.
“Skreeee—rawr…”
A shrieking Red-Armored Beetle got its skull smashed by Jiang’s bat. Its scream turned pitiful, then went silent forever.
But Jiang wasn’t worried about attracting more low-level monsters. With Chu’s strength, covering their retreat from school was easy.
“Jiang Changyi? Is that you?!”
The familiar voice came from upstairs. Jiang looked up—it was Chen Yonglong.
Seeing Jiang turn, Chen was overjoyed, shouting “Wait for me! Wait up!” while activating his berserker ability and dashing down the stairs.
Jiang remembered the scene of Chen and Wang Xin kissing. It still stung, but he decided to stop and see what he wanted.
Besides, shouldn’t Chen have gone back to the cafeteria? Why was he here at the dorms?
Soon, Chen rushed down.
But when he finally stood before Jiang again, he didn’t know what to say.
Scratching his head, he settled on: “Why didn’t you go back to the cafeteria? It’s too dangerous wandering out here alone.”
The concern in his tone only made Jiang uncomfortable.
Don’t you already have a partner? Why bother worrying about me—a stranger?
Because of his father’s betrayal, Jiang was especially wary of such situations.
“I have my own reasons. You should focus on your partner instead.”
Polite, but distant. Jiang refused to be dragged into becoming someone’s third wheel again.
Men were men—even with a partner, they still sought out others.
“P-partner?! What partner?!” Chen was baffled. “When did I get a partner without knowing it?”
“Still pretending?” Jiang felt disappointed. He’d thought Chen was different—sincere, pure.
Maybe he’d misjudged after all.
“I saw you kissing Wang Xin. And you’re still going to tell me you’re just bros?”
Jiang didn’t want to dance around it anymore. He laid the truth bare.
