- Chapter 7 - The First Contract
As Chen Yonglong busied himself gathering medicine, he kept sneaking glances at Jiang Changyi’s profile.
Unable to hold back, he asked, “Brother Jiang, did you study medicine? How do you know so much about these drugs?”
Jiang’s hand paused mid-motion, a fleeting look of pain flashing across his face.
Right… why did he know so much?
He gave a bitter laugh.
“My sister and I were bullied often when we were kids. Some kids threw stones at us, others would push us down the stairs.”
“So… after treating those injuries so many times, I just learned what to do.”
Chen Yonglong wasn’t stupid—just simple. He could see Jiang’s sadness and said softly, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to bring that up…”
“It’s fine,” Jiang interrupted. “I’m not that little punching bag anymore. Don’t worry.”
He disliked being comforted. Only the weak needed comfort. Only losers needed comfort.
Have you ever seen anyone comforting the strong, or the winners?
Jiang refused to be weak. He refused to be a loser.
A weakling couldn’t protect family. A loser couldn’t earn respect.
He had always been strong-willed. That was why he cut Chen off before the other could finish his sympathetic words.
Chen opened his mouth awkwardly, but in the end said nothing.
Apart from the ability to contract, Contract Masters also possessed a contract space—a place where contracted beings could rest, and which could also serve as a storage dimension. This space grew larger as the Contract Master advanced.
So while it looked like Jiang was stuffing medicine into his backpack, most of it actually went into his contract space.
Still, he didn’t take too much—just a balanced variety. Medicine needed to be applied correctly, after all. What good would taking heaps of it do? Accidentally overdose someone?
Chen only picked up the essentials too, so the group soon prepared to leave.
“Wait!”
As they were about to head out, a door suddenly opened and a girl peeked her head out.
She was wearing a white coat—probably someone working at the campus infirmary. Seeing no monsters outside, and that the students were about to leave, she hurried to call out to them.
“Don’t you… aren’t you afraid of the monsters out there?”
Wan Xiaoyu’s gaze kept darting nervously to the hallway, one hand clutching the doorframe as if ready to retreat at the slightest sign of danger.
Since she was a girl, Jiang explained patiently, “Didn’t you hear the broadcast? Those monsters aren’t invincible. If you fight back with weapons, you actually have a chance to kill them.”
Of course, for a lone girl, facing them was still another matter.
Wan Xiaoyu asked, “Then… is the cafeteria safe? Did you come from there?”
Jiang glanced at Chen. Clearly, the girl wanted to follow them back to the cafeteria. But he and Chen still had to go to the East Teaching Building to find Wang Xin.
There was no telling which would be safer—leaving her here alone, or taking her along.
But one of the boys from the security team answered first: “The cafeteria’s safe. Zong Qiong already led us to clear it out. Everyone’s gathering there now.”
Another chimed in, “Yeah, yeah. Strength in numbers. Come with us—it’s safer than hiding here alone.”
And just like that, Wan Xiaoyu joined them. Jiang reminded her, “No matter what kind of monster you see, do not make a sound. Got it?”
Wan nodded frantically, like a pecking chick.
Chen leaned over and muttered, “Aren’t those two being a little too eager?”
“Tch.” Jiang rolled his eyes. “That’s not eagerness. They just want a medic in the group to patch people up. That’s all.”
He even suspected Zong Qiong had put them up to it. Otherwise, why would they be so enthusiastic?
With Chen leading the way, the five of them finally reached the East Teaching Building where Wang Xin was.
Chen told the other three, “Wait here. I’ll be right back.”
The three of them: “?”
But since Chen was their team’s only Awakener, they were instantly on edge about him leaving. “Where are you going?”
Chen looked conflicted, not knowing how to explain. Jiang smirked and cut in, “Bathroom.” Then he tugged Chen upstairs with him.
The three: “…”
They looked awkward but had no grounds to argue.
Upstairs, Chen went straight to the classroom where Wang Xin was, while Jiang scanned the floor for a suitable insectoid corpse to use as a sacrifice.
In terms of energy rank, zombies were the lowest. Red-armored beetles were only a notch stronger, but that was all Jiang could handle for now.
When Chen had left Wang Xin here earlier, he’d already cleared out the monsters. Sure enough, Jiang found a red beetle carcass.
Casting a glance at Chen talking with Wang Xin, Jiang crouched by the corpse and began reciting a strange, convoluted chant.
He had no idea what language it was or what it meant. The words just poured out of him like muscle memory, as smooth as a tongue-twister.
As the incantation ended, glowing patterns flared beneath the beetle. The body vanished, replaced by a small, cream-colored creature.
It had big round eyes, tiny wings on its back, a tuft of fur atop its head, and another at the tip of its tail.
“Lieo~”
The little beast cried as soon as it appeared. Somehow, those tiny wings carried it aloft, and it darted straight for Jiang’s face. Startled, he shoved it into his contract space just before it collided with him.
“Li—ao—!”
The little beast squealed in protest inside the space.
Jiang was utterly baffled.
What the hell? He’d expected something epic—like a ghostly bone dragon, an elven archer, maybe even a deep-sea titan.
But no… he got a chubby little flying kitten?!
The disappointment was crushing.
This Tom-cat-lookalike didn’t even seem weaned. How was it supposed to protect him or fight monsters?
Jiang regretted it instantly. He was frustrated, disheartened… but powerless to change the result.
Contract Masters shared their mental link with their summons, and the little beast could sense Jiang’s thoughts.
So now it was both sad and angry, squeaking “Liao liao!” nonstop inside the contract space.
