- Chapter 11 - A Recipe Using Soy Sauce
Seraph’s Perspective
“Two skewers of yakitori with sauce for Table 1!”
“Two sauce-flavored yakitori and one with salt, going to Table 5!”
“Three sauce-flavored yakitori and a refill of ale for Table 2!”
“Got it!”
Grilled skewers of chicken, cooked over charcoal, were added to today’s menu.
The customers happily ate them, ordering more ale as they enjoyed the food. The skewers were dipped in a sauce made by simmering soy sauce, white wine, and sugar, then grilled until they had a delicious aroma. The smoky scent filled the entire inn.
Albert, the adventurer who once gave me a silver coin, took a bite of his yakitori, pulling the skewer out with his teeth. As he chewed, he turned to me and asked,
“This is delicious, Seraph!”
He remembered my name.
“Tastes good, right?”
I looked at the other members of his party. Setsuna, the one wearing a pointed hat, spoke to me.
“We’ve stayed at many inns, but this place is truly wonderful.”
“Thank you so much!”
Setsuna pressed the chicken with a fork and pulled the skewer out so everyone at the table could share. However, Albert ignored the shared plate and held onto his own yakitori skewers, eating enthusiastically.
“That’s why, whenever there’s a quest related to the Demon Forest, we take it right away!”
Setsuna responded calmly to Albert’s words.
“Well, not every quest is just for this inn, but we all do like it here.”
The other two members of their party, a man in full plate armor and another dressed like a thief, nodded in agreement.
“But, you see…”
Albert spoke while biting into the last piece of chicken on his skewer.
“Something strange is happening in the Demon Forest lately.”
“Strange?”
“Yeah, the monsters aren’t acting like they usually do.”
His entire party nodded. This could have something to do with what happened to Luka when she was kidnapped by the hobgoblins.
“The other day, we ran into two separate groups of hobgoblins in a row. Even for C-rank adventurers like us, fighting back-to-back battles against D+ ranked monster groups is exhausting.”
Fighting a hobgoblin party sounds like a real challenge. The only reason I was able to rescue Luka was because I fought them one-on-one. If they had attacked in a group, I wouldn’t have known how to handle it.
But what surprised me more was their rank as adventurers. The ranking system goes from A to G. A-rank adventurers are said to be as strong as the Twelve Heroes blessed by the goddess in fairy tales. Because of their legendary strength, there are only three A-rank adventurers in the entire world.
C-rank is already close to B-rank, meaning these adventurers are incredibly skilled.
“You guys are C-rank adventurers?”
“Huh? We never mentioned that?”
“I never heard it before! That’s amazing!”
“Well, it’s not that big of a deal,” Albert said, scratching his head.
I felt proud that such skilled adventurers were regular customers at our inn.
Then, Setsuna spoke up.
“But you know, that guy over there—David Leenvern—is even more amazing.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
I asked, and Setsuna explained.
“He used to be a B-rank adventurer. And by the way, his wife was a C-rank adventurer like us.”
“What?! I didn’t know that!”
Albert laughed at my reaction.
“You really didn’t know? ‘David the Mighty’ is still famous! Well, if David is here at the inn, we probably don’t have to worry too much about trouble from the Demon Forest. Still, Seraph, be careful, alright?”
“Yeah,” I replied, then returned to work.
That night, after business was finished, we started cleaning up.
As we worked, Laura, who was calculating the night’s earnings, let out a sigh.
“Hmm…”
Abigail, who was sweeping the floor nearby, looked over and asked,
“What’s wrong, Mom?”
Laura placed a hand on her cheek and said,
“The sales were great, but… the food expenses are getting high…”
I was already ten years old and eating more than before, but I wasn’t the real problem.
The real problem was Luka.
She was a wonderful girl, but she ate a lot.
