- Chapter 2 - The Black Piglet Inn
(Seraph’s Perspective)
Ten years have passed since then.
I live with my mother in Noonan Village, a small rural town.
The sky is clear, the air is fresh, and the sunlight shines gently over the green forest. Life here isn’t wealthy, but I love Noonan Village.
“Seraph~?”
My mother calls me. I remember my past life as Shusaku Tanaka, but now my name is Seraph Engale.
“Hurry up and help me when you wake up!”
My mother and I live in a rented room while working at an inn called The Black Piglet Inn. It’s not just a place for travelers to stay—it also serves as a tavern.
Recently, I’ve been given the task of buying ale for the inn.
“Yes~!”
I run down the hallway on the second floor, heading for the stairs.
Since the inn has an open ceiling, I can see my mother downstairs, scrubbing the floor.
As I reach the stairs and prepare to go down, Abigail, the innkeeper’s daughter, complains to me while sweeping.
“Hey! I just finished sweeping, so don’t stomp around!”g
Abigail is fifteen years old and the face of the inn. She has red hair, a cute face, and a kind personality. In my past life, I died at seventeen, so we’re about the same age now. But compared to how I was back then, she’s much more responsible.
“Okay, okay~!”
I brush off her words and jump down the stairs. Behind me, I hear her exasperated voice.
“Ugh! Seriously!”
As I land, David, the innkeeper, tosses me a burlap pouch filled with silver and copper coins. He’s bald and well-built.
“The usual, Seraph. I’m counting on you.”
“Got it!”
I catch the pouch, and Abigail scolds him.
“Don’t throw money around!”
David scratches the back of his head and sticks out his tongue playfully.
“Oops… Got told off again.”
“What if it falls under the floorboards?!”
“Well, I mean… If that happens, we’ll just have to look for it, right, Seraph?”
“Exactly!”
I nod in agreement. Abigail sighs in frustration.
“We still haven’t found Luka… Losing even a single copper coin would be a disaster!”
David looks guilty and apologizes.
“S-Sorry… I won’t do it again…”
He’s the same as ever. But more importantly, I ask,
“What’s wrong with Luka?”
Luka is a brown cow that lives at the inn. Her milk is often used for cooking or served to guests. Of course, we drink it too.
“Well—”
Abigail explains.
Luka has been missing since early this morning. She was last seen late at night, so she must have disappeared sometime between then and sunrise. Lately, farm animals have been going missing around the village. But since Luka has wandered off a few times before, David and I aren’t too worried. She’s probably hiding somewhere or accidentally wandered into our neighbor Reuben’s ranch.
For now, I decide to look for her after I finish my shopping.
“She’ll turn up, I’m sure!”
I reassure Abigail and head toward the door, but my mother, still sweeping, calls out,
“Be careful, okay?”
“Yeah!”
I reply and step outside. In front of the inn, Laura, David’s wife and Abigail’s mother, is polishing the inn’s sign.
“Seraph, are you sure you can go alone?”
Her long red hair is tied back in a single ponytail. When I tilt my head in confusion, she continues.
“You usually have someone helping you pull the cart…”
I was only recently put in charge of buying ale. It makes sense for Laura to worry—after all, a child carrying four barrels of ale is risky.
But I have enchantment magic. It’s a type of magic that strengthens the body, mind, and magical power—kind of like buffs and debuffs in games. By using this, I can easily carry barrels as big as I am.
I reassure Laura.
“I’ll be fine! You’re letting me stay here, so I want to be useful!”
She looks a little unsure but eventually says, “Alright, I’m counting on you,” and sees me off.
After I was reborn, I quickly learned that I had no ability to use the four major elemental magics. Because of this, my father—who my mother says is a high-ranking noble—banished us from his territory.
Apparently, my father was an important aristocrat. He had an affair with my mother, who was working as a slave at the time, and I was born as a result. When the priest declared that I couldn’t use elemental magic, my father’s wife was standing beside him. No wonder she hated us.
After a long journey, my mother and I found a home here.
Noonan Village is in the southernmost part of the Schmal Kingdom, far from my father’s lands. It’s close to the Viktor Empire in the south and the Monster Forest, an unexplored area filled with creatures, stretching from the southeast to the northeast.
Many adventurers visit this village to gather herbs and monster materials from the Monster Forest. Even though it’s a small rural town, it has its fair share of activity.
Anyway, I need to buy ale.
I’ve arrived at my destination—
The monastery.
