Inn Overlord: Reincarnated with Enhancement Magic, Now Worshipped as a Divine Messenger! - Chapter 3
Every time I visited the monastery, I had a question in my mind. The god I believed in during my past life and the god of this world were different.
Reincarnation itself was also different from what my previous religion taught. But if this reincarnation that happened to me wasn’t the work of a god, then what was it?
In many reincarnation-themed anime and light novels, there’s usually a scene where the protagonist meets a god or a goddess. But I never met one. By the way, these kinds of books were considered forbidden by my parents in my past life.
When I entered the monastery, I saw a statue of a goddess made of marble-like stone. I wasn’t sure whether my enchantment magic came from the goddess of this world or from the god I believed in before. Lately, I had started to think that maybe the god I believed in and this goddess were actually the same being.
So, I prayed to the goddess. I thanked her for letting me live happily and for granting me this power.
“Oh, Seraph…”
The monastery priest called out to me.
Unlike churches, monasteries were mainly self-sufficient. They managed their own operations through farming and brewing ale.
I greeted him.
“Good morning, Father. I’m here to buy the usual ale today.”
The priest led me to the back. He had already prepared four barrels of ale at the back entrance, and I handed him the payment.
Then, I picked up one of the barrels.
“Oh… It’s always strange to see you do that…”
Actually, I wasn’t using enchantment magic at that moment. If I did, I could easily carry all four barrels at once by enhancing my body. But doing that would attract too much attention, and I needed to conserve my mana for experiments.
──I already use my mana to search for Luka, so I have to save as much as possible…
Enchantment magic had many possibilities.
It could strengthen the body, mind, and even magical power. I believed that body enhancement not only made a person stronger but might also have healing effects. Also, I had noticed that using enchantment magic every day made me less sensitive to mana depletion. Just like how muscle training builds strength, I concluded that training with magic could increase my mana capacity.
Through my experiments, I also realized the frightening potential of enchantment magic.
For example, I once took an old knife from David, sneaked out of the village, and went into the forbidden demon forest. I poured my mana into the knife, fixed the magic onto it, and then applied further enchantment to enhance it. When I swung it at a tree trunk, I only meant to leave a scratch, but instead, the tree was completely cut in half. Even rocks were sliced apart just as easily. When I used body enhancement for physical strikes, the impact was so strong that people around me mistook it for an earthquake.
As I kept experimenting, the effects of the magic started lasting for half a day. Even when I wasn’t using body enhancement, I could feel the power accumulating in my body. That was why I could carry ale barrels so effortlessly, even without using magic.
One time, I tried using enchantment magic on an apple tree to accelerate its growth and make it bear fruit again. But I forgot that apple trees needed cross-pollination—they needed pollen from another tree to produce fruit. In the end, the tree just grew bigger and bigger. Then I realized that it was absorbing nutrients from the surrounding trees, weakening them. I immediately stopped the enchantment magic and cut down the tree—using an enchanted knife, of course.
That apple tree had enough power to change the entire landscape. After that, I stopped experimenting recklessly. However, recently, I had started another experiment.
I used the wood from that cut-down apple tree to build a small hut, where I was cultivating koji mold and yeast.
In my past life, because of my family's religious beliefs, I was raised in an organic lifestyle. I had experience making koji starter and yeast. Fortunately, rice farming was common in this region, so I was able to get rice grains. By using those grains, along with ash and steamed rice, I could produce koji starter. With that, I could make essential seasonings for Japanese cuisine, like soy sauce, sake, and miso.
I wanted to check on the koji starter, but first, I had to search for Luka, a missing cow. I planned to use enchantment magic on myself to enhance my senses and track it down.
After I finished carrying the four ale barrels to my house in four trips, I got permission from my mother to go search for Luka. But just as I was about to leave, I heard a voice calling for help from the neighboring farm.
“Hey!! Someone!!”
