- Chapter 2 - Childhood Friends (Part 2)
Lady Alice Michelle, the daughter of a viscount, and Louis Persier, the son of a viscount, first met when they were seven years old.
“Hello, I’m Louis. What’s your name?”
“H-hello… I’m Alice.”
“We’re both seven, aren’t we?”
“Uh… y-yes.”
As Louis introduced himself with a bright smile, Alice blushed. He was her first love.
Whether studying, going out, or playing, the two were always together.
“They really are close, aren’t they? Almost like siblings.”
“Oh? Are you planning to leave it at just siblings?”
“Well… but should we really be the ones to decide their future?”
“How about we wait until they turn fifteen?”
“That sounds reasonable…”
“Yes, let them decide for themselves—whether they remain childhood friends or take a step further and get engaged.”
Both families agreed to watch over Alice and Louis, leaving the decision about their future to them.
When they turned fifteen, their parents finally brought up the topic of engagement.
“What… an engagement!?”
Alice, caught completely off guard, turned to Louis, who was sitting beside her, with wide eyes.
(Engaged… to Louis? I’m happy, but… what about him?)
She had never confessed her feelings, always keeping their relationship as just childhood friends.
“I accept the engagement.”
“What!?”
Alice looked at Louis in shock. Seeing her reaction, he let out a small, amused smile.
“Do you not want me as your fiancĂ©?”
“No, that’s not it… I’m just surprised. A-are you really okay with having me as your fiancĂ©e?”
“Who else would taste-test your cooking for you?”
“…Louis…”
Overwhelmed with happiness, Alice’s eyes welled up with tears. Louis smiled as he made the promise of engagement before their parents.
They agreed to marry after graduating from the academy.
At seventeen, Alice and Louis were invited to the castle for the First Prince, Camille’s, twentieth birthday and engagement announcement. They had planned to attend together, but on his way to pick up Alice, Louis encountered Lady Caroline, whose carriage had broken down. Offering her a ride, he decided they would travel to the castle together.
“Thank you so much. You’ve been a great help.”
“It’s no trouble. Since we’re heading to the same place, would you like a ride back as well?”
“What!?”
Alice couldn’t hide her shock. She hadn’t expected that Caroline would also share their carriage on the way home.
“Oh… There’s no need to trouble yourself. I’ll make other arrangements for my return.”
Smiling, Caroline thanked Louis before stepping into the castle. Louis watched her retreating figure for a moment.
“…Louis?”
“Huh? Oh… right, let’s go in.”
Alice noticed Louis’s hesitation and felt a twinge of concern. However, as soon as they entered the grand hall, her worries faded. The sight of elegantly dressed nobles and lavish dishes brought a smile to her face.
“Wow… it’s beautiful.”
“Haha, I thought you’d be more excited about the food than the decorations.”
“Oh, Louis, really!”
“Alice!”
A cheerful voice called out from near the banquet table.
“Alice, your friend is calling you.”
“Let’s go together, Louis.”
“I’ll pass. If I go with you, you won’t be able to eat as much as you’d like.”
“I don’t eat that much!”
“Haha!”
Alice left Louis’s side and walked toward the banquet table.
“Oh? Where’s Louis?”
“He told me to enjoy some time with my friends.”
“Well, it’s true that it’s harder to eat freely when your fiancĂ© is around.”
“Colin, you sound just like Louis!”
Alice and Colin laughed as they enjoyed the extravagant feast together.
