- Chapter 6 - Louis's Heartbreak
“…C-Caroline…?”
Louis never expected Caroline to reject his confession.
“…I’m sorry… I never imagined that you would confess to me… or that Lady Alice would break off the engagement with you…”
“Oh… The engagement was something our parents arranged. It’s nothing you need to worry about… Alice has always been just a childhood friend to me. I don’t think I could ever see her in a romantic way.”
Louis smiled at Caroline as he spoke, reaffirming that Alice would always remain just a childhood friend.
“……”
Alice stood frozen in shock. She had always believed that after graduating from the academy, they would get married, and she had dreamed of becoming a good wife for Louis. But in an instant, everything had crumbled.
“…I’m sorry, but I can’t be your girlfriend, Louis.”
“Why not? You said you enjoyed being with me… Please, tell me the reason.”
Louis was desperate, unable to understand why Caroline was rejecting him.
“Caroline, is something wrong?”
“Ah! My dear!”
“!?”
Louis’s breath caught in his throat as Caroline addressed the man who had just approached them.
“…D-dear…?”
Louis looked between them, completely bewildered.
“Was your carriage all right?” the man asked.
“Yes, though I was startled when our servant came running to the estate to inform you. I didn’t expect the carriage to break down.”
Louis listened in stunned silence as the two conversed.
“And these people?” the man asked, glancing at Louis and Alice.
“Oh, he kindly offered to take me to the castle when I was stranded.”
“I see. Thank you for helping my wife.”
“……Wife…?”
Louis’s entire world seemed to stop as Caroline’s husband smiled and thanked him.
“Shall we go?”
“Yes. Lord Louis, Lady Alice, thank you… and I’m truly sorry. I was grateful for your kindness.”
“……”
Caroline turned away, disappearing into the crowd with her husband, leaving Louis looking as if he had just woken from a surreal dream.
In just a few hours, after meeting Caroline, Louis had experienced his first heartbreak.
“……”
“……”
“……”
Neither Alice, Colin, nor Louis were in the mood to enjoy the banquet any longer.
“Ah… Haha, what a surprise. I had no idea Lady Caroline was married.”
Louis forced an awkward smile, looking at Alice and Colin as if nothing had happened.
“……”
“Since the academy is closed tomorrow, why don’t we go into town? Alice, I’ll buy you that hair ornament you wanted.”
“……”
“Wait a minute, Louis! You broke up with Alice! Why are you inviting her out?”
“Huh? No, I never said I was breaking up with her…”
“What!? Don’t say something so selfish! You hurt Alice and now you’re trying to act like nothing happened? I can’t believe how shallow you are!”
“This… has nothing to do with you. Alice is my fiancĂ©e.”
“You—!”
“Enough!”
“!”
Alice’s voice rang out, silencing both of them.
“…I’m done, Louis. We’re over. I’m not your fiancĂ©e anymore.”
“A-Alice…”
Tears filled Alice’s eyes as she glared at Louis, her voice firm as she declared their engagement officially over.
